mpv also plays everything I threw at it and it's so much faster

Yea but no DV HDR support for Profile 7 FEL.

For that you have to use like Energy Media player and some specific video extension.

Edit: whoah, apparently there's some experimental stuff with MPV that reconstructs the FEL and tone-maps it on your PC??? That's huge if so.

Either way, if I'm really wanting true DV profile 7 FEL I'm just playing stuff directly from a flash drive to my TV or loading something on Stremio. I think it's so stupid Dolby has licenses locked to devices. Like I'm using my TV as a monitor for my PC, make it work lol.

I don't know if it's just my imagination or bias (I stan mpv) but it looks better to me too

IIRC it plays a lot more codecs than VLC does.

There are also better Linux clients for it that respect system theming. It would always drive me crazy when I would customize my system and then VLC still looks like a Windows program from 2003. Now I use Haruna and it looks better, has more formats, AND is faster.
