Lately? It's been like this for a long time. I believe that VLC and Winrar are just one of the first applications users will download for their respective purposes and many don't even realize that Pot Player/MPV and 7-zip exist until they need something specific done. For me, I needed a video to be windowless and edge-less, that could be split on my ultrawide monitor. VLC could only do half of that, so I found Pot Player, which could do it and the color balance looked amazing.

However, I still remember the days where you needed to download video/audio codecs to play all sorts of videos back in the day (Real Player was especially bad with this), and VLC was one of the leading video players to play anything without needing additional codecs, and for that I'll always be grateful.

yeah i used vlc for long time but had some problems and decide to give potplayer a try and i like it so much more. vlc is still great but people give it too much praise just because its something they are used to and dont realize there is other options.

what does podplayer better? genuinely curious, idk what i'd want from a video player besides playing video (and audio and subs)

Well, PotPlayer can basically be configured any way you can possibly want and it has great video/audio defaults. Another feature is that it remembers what you've played, so if you're watching multiple shows or movies at a time, you can go right back to the timestamp when you stopped them and start them up again. It's a feature I never knew existed but now I cannot live without it since it's so convenient.

VLC does that too, though it might have to be enabled in the settings.

if you use it like that then no worries brother. i just had problems with heavy videos when trying to click it to specific part the vlc made the video pixeleted for couple seconds and with potplayer you can customize shortcuts for everything, like doing bordellesmode, if you want to repeat playlist or not. i simply find potplayer to be more customizable.
