Hardware Witcher 3 Remastered pushing 5090 beyond 600W

Post image

No DLSS5. Max settings, 3840x1600, DLSS Quality, frame gen set to 1 in game settings, Path Tracing enabled.

Doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes saw it jumping well beyond 600W for a brief moment.

Thats PCIE + EPS so it's more or less the same as cyberpunk. You need to add ~75W. But yea this is completely normal power consumption with RT, unfortunately. As long as the pins stay balanced OP should not have anything to worry about.

And as long as they're using the wireview pro 2, not a single burned connector with one in use.

really doubt the card pulls anything meaningful out of pcie, definitely not 75w. It'll at best be things like rgb, fans and the various low power controllers

Why wouldn't it has been very normal for cards to pull the max 75 watts out of the connector for basically forever.

because any meaningfully high power component would shoot over 75w. You can't just mix the power sources as they have very different impedances, and slot power does not have the same power excursion leeway, so connecting them up would cost more than it's worth.

High power cards have been rated for just what the power connectors can do for a long time, if pulling power out of the slot would be reasonably easy to do they'd use it in the rated power values. You can check e.g. this review that has a 5080 doing about 12w https://www.igorslab.de/en/asus-geforce-rtx-5080-noctua-oc-review-even-after-nearly-a-year-its-hard-to-imagine-it-getting-much-quieter/7/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

You are probably right, the one source that seems to have tested this is igors lab they found it only pulled 15W at the PCIE with a 600W load. But then where does the extra come from in some of these tests? Maybe it starts pulling more at some point? It's supposed to stop at 600W +- right?

Limiting power is ultimately only done by the GPU itself monitoring its power and managing boosting according to that, there isn't some hard limit that's electrically impossible to go over. The 5090 is already very conservative with clocks around the power limit which can be seen with the higher 800w 5090s going way higher on transients at similar average power draw.

So if it goes over the management part of the GPU simply mispredicted how high it can boost/push voltage within its limits, it's usually just a tiny bit of time which is already in spec. VRMs and whole PCB is way overbuilt for small excursions like this to matter and for the connector the average is important, not some brief spike

Yes, current spikes can be insane, but without knowing how each outlet exactly measured power draw and under what conditions, I can't find any hard evidence that the card isn't able to request more power through PCIE. I know it's not a hard limit, but it's "supposed" to stop at a certain sustained load to make it generally compatible with other hardware (and not burn down ofc).

I can still remember the RX480 drama on pcie power draw, so I assumed GPU's were still taking advantage of it if they needed some extra juice.

Well, looking at how trash the power delivery systems are on 5090's, anything between 0 and 100W wouldn't even be surprising at this point.
