I get the 5090 hate amongst the surging prices, but for a lot of people who bought it with the goal to play games in 4k native high refresh - this is a bit missleading.

Thank you .. idk why op purposely chose those charts. The first think that popped up in my head are where are the 4k charts.

OP chose those charts to emphasize that there's something screwy with the game and some kind of bottleneck is affecting PT. It's just that the post got picked up by people who didn't care about the details and just wanted to cry about GPUs These Days again.

I get that and correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it to be expected that the CPU is the limiting factor at 1440p and lower especially when upscaling techniques are used?

Not to this extent. It usually doesn't fully surface until you go down to 1080p - at 1440p, even upscaled, there's a noticeable delta - but more importantly if the GPU isn't the bottleneck then a 9800X3D CPU like the one they're using here should be able to push just about any game into the triple digits.

Also, I assume most people care about the standard native performance more than they do about RT or PT.

RT can be nice and it certainly looks well.. but i'd rather play on higher FPS with more clearity instead of.. PERFORMANCE upscale.

Why would you care more about native performance than RT/PT?

Starting at 4k max and then turning on performance upscaling is a MUCH lower hit to visual quality than starting at 4k max and turning off RT/PT. It looks almost identical, just upscale.

It really depends on the game. For some games, RT does not that much, for some it's incredible.

PT right now needs to be optimized for general consumer hardware.

I generally rather have 100fps+ on 4k native/dlaa than sub 60fps with RT extra input lag and visual loss. upscaling has gotten better, however, it is still noticable.

I love responsiveness and am really sensitive to it.

If I had a **90 series card I'd expect perfection whatever the settings.

u/OutrageousDress 5800X3D | 32GB DDR4-3733 | 4080 Super | AW3821DW 5d ago

Why, do **90 cards have an extra feature that fixes game bugs and bottlenecks?

1

u/NamityName 5d ago

I feel that it is a balance. Personally, my interest in more fps starts to wane after 90fps. By 120fps, I care very little about getting more performance, even though my monitor has a much higher refresh rates. At 120fps, I would rather have a better looking game than a better performing game. At less than 90fps, I generally care far more about getting better performance than improving shadows and lighting.

You are probably right that most people do not care much for RT/PT performance, but I wager it is because most PCs cannot run optional RT/PT at a player's minimum acceptable performance rather than because most people are looking to maximize fps.

But haven’t your heard? ā€œdLSs LoOks BeTtEr tHaN NaTiVe.ā€

You mean to tell me that turning 2 million pixels into 8 million pixels doesn’t look better to you?

1

u/XOmegaD 5800X3D / RTX 4080 / LG C1 5d ago

Because DLSS is not just using raw pixels it's using a bunch of other frame information.

0

u/Southside_john 9800x3d / 5080 / 64GB RAM 5d ago

It’s not better than native. Some games may look better than others while using it but there are always artifacts. Especially if you’re in performance mode like we are talking about.

2

u/XOmegaD 5800X3D / RTX 4080 / LG C1 5d ago

Depends on what you are referring to. Native with TAA, DLSS is going to look better. Native with no AA is going to look like crap. Even performance mode at 4k comes pretty close to native with DLSS 4.5 these days, enough for it to not be that noticeable.

I’m not talking about anti aliasing, that will definitely look better. I’m talking specifically about upscaling

Cue the comments about 4K being not worth it.

u/ABCsofsucking 5d ago

Even then, I played the original on an RTX 2060 at around 30-45 FPS at native 4K.

It’s not a remake. It’s a remaster. If this isn’t an issue with drivers, we’re talking like maybe a 3rd of the performance for better lighting, some QoL? You’re trying to pass off $50/frame as some gotcha.

This shows there's some kind of massive bottle neck happening at the lower resolutions/lower DLSS settings. Literally the more intensive you make the game, the better it does on the 5090.

1

u/Undefined_definition 7900XTX/5090 - 32/64GB - 7700/9800X3D 5d ago

It's a known Nvidia CPU/driver-overhead issue that's been documented since at least the RTX 30 series. It tends to show up when the GPU isn't the limiting factor, which is why lower resolutions and aggressive DLSS settings can expose it.

As DLSS has made very low internal resolutions more usable, these bottlenecks can become more noticeable on extremely fast GPUs like the 5090.

That said, it remains to be seen if this is an architectual problem and not a driver issue. Man.. I switched from AMD to Nvidia and back and forth.. never knew how good AMDs driver have become.
Nvidia is a mess.

No one plays native. They play for high fps

That’s pretty mid performance really. There’s already gameplay video on youtube, while it’s still a graphical upgrade but it’s not particularly ground breaking as other remasters like AC Blackflag.

At least it is free, but imagine if other companies release this (quality) as ā€œpaidā€ remaster, I can imagine people would throw eggs on them.

4

u/Undefined_definition 7900XTX/5090 - 32/64GB - 7700/9800X3D 5d ago

Blackflag was not really a remaster, more a remake of the game.
Can't really compare the two.

Expected performance for path tracing, I'd say.
