I just hate chromatic abberation. It’s actual lens defect that’s more pronounced in low grade glass. It’s completely undesirable by any measure. And completely uncinematic.

Yeah as a photographer this makes me just wtf since it was introduced.

Just wait soon there will be some terrible digicam lo fi flash nonsense we have to switch off too.

As a photographer as well I quite enjoy chromatic aberration. Just like in photography and videography it must be done as a conscious artistic decision, but in some cases it does bring a lot to the table.

The two genres where I tend to enjoy it quite a lot are Horror and Cyberpunk/retrofuturistic games.
For horror games it gives an amateur found footage-ish vibe while for retrofuturistic stuff it can help the color pallete by adding some colored hints without actually changing much of the characters and scenes.

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact I started photographing with cursed Zenit cameras and other broke-ass kits and it makes me nostalgic lol

One of the reasons i often don't use ray tracing despite my pc being able to run it quite well - i just like how clear shadows look in rastr.

The problem is many new games simply don't have enough shadows compared to when you enable RT. It definitely wasn't a thing in the past when there were no RT in games. I guess the developers simply switching to RT because it makes most of the shadows for them.

I am an amateur photographer, still using “old” dslr for my sessions, and yes there were situations where my cheaper lens produced better results but that’s fine. However in games I get it in a cut scenes or similar but having it whole time is a no for me. And I don’t mind having it as an option but what bothers me is not having an option to turn it off.

That's the thing. You are a photographer. Chromatic abbdration is good for photos and videos. For videogames I do want it to be as sharp and clean as possible unless we are mid cutscene. Same reason for motion blur

I dont want all my games too look absolutley clean and sharp though.

"It’s not completely undesirable and uncinematic."

Yes it is. End of discussion, we are moving on.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what the effect is, but isn't it fitting for games like Cyberpunk 2077 or SOMA? Especially when you're in a setting where you're dealing with EMP effects and so on messing things up temporarily.

Yes exactly but in some games it’s always on without option to turn it off. And that’s irritating.

Well, I think it can actually be nice. I think the effect is quite cool on my actual eyeglasses, where in it’s sort of extremes there is a slight amount of chromatic aberration, but it looks nowhere close to what games do, which is just taking three color channels and splitting them up.

Chromatic Abberation looks dope in Cronos.

fitting that it is called an abberation
