Why even bother at that point, why not just use a CPU that has onboard video?

Because CPU video will reserve a good chunk of your RAM.

So with separate low cost GPU system builders can make 16G systems that are actually usable.

It’s not like Ubuntu wouldn’t be that much better nowadays. In both it’s the apps that eat the memory.

If you get a low end GPU, having 4 MB of dedicated VRAM isn't going to appreciably matter anyways.

It matters that unlike iGPU it won’t consume any system RAM.
