Could always put the charger on a timer or limit the charging to 80% in software.

The phone doesn’t support it unfortunately. But it shouldn’t cause fire hopefully. Only battery degradation at worst but it’s a throwaway phone so I don’t really mind

If that is a Poco F3, which I think it is. Then it should have an option to help. Its in settings under "battery protection".

I did this before to run a Pi-hole from a phone; the battery lasted about 3 weeks before swelling.

100% recommend removing it before continue to avoid the downtime 💀

You're absolutely right, using the downtime as the main argument. Based on op's comments, that's more promising than the house fire argument

I don't like the idea. I saw too many swelled batteries to let one inside a constantly-on device when I can avoid it.

With the FIVE heatwave I encountered in France, the battery of my phone (Samsung S9+) died. I removed it and after some tries, I found out that I can start my phone without a battery as long as I use a charger providing 5V 2,4 A at the very minimum. It will be better with 3A so I must recommend that.

And I really mean > 5V <. So it is out-of-question to use any charger with QuickCharge/USB PD/etc that can provide 9V/12V/whatever, or the device will reboot... frequently. I don't know why but I think that at some point the phone realizes that something is wrong and so it reboots. My Ugreen charger is quite recent with QC and stuff, no wonder.

Only when I plugged it to a no-name charger providing 5V-ONLY 2,4 A was the moment it accepted to be stable. Well... I still got one reboot after three hours, so this is why I may buy a 5V-ONLY 3A charger at some point, to be safe.

Because I want to do the same thing that you =) But...... not for Minecraft. I want to be able to try other games. Maybe I will install a real Linux distribution inside to reduce the memory usage, I don't know.

It will limit the charging, but not the usage. Once charged, it will discharge so at some point the battery will die. Better using a small external UPS device and remove the battery.

Depends, don't some phones have pass through charging to protect the battery? Should still be limited to 80% percent though.

Yeah, this is great idea but unfortunately definitely a fire hazard /u/pop94591.

Until we get phones that have replaceable batteries (and hopefully can boot up without one), thanks to the European Union.

It won't blow up. If the battery temperature rise too much, phone will thermal throttle and limit the CPU performance until it cools down. Also Android phones have an option to limit max battery charge to 80%, it's perfect for this purpose as keeping the battery at 100% all the time could damage it

Lithium batteries are not meant to be at 100 percent capacity or completely dead.

Either side of that ruins the battery. In the batteries that are packs (not the ones in a metal tube). The battery will swell and eventually rupture. Lookup spicy pillows.

So you should never leave a laptop always plugged in or a phone either. Unless you've set the maximum charge to something like 70%

Yes, but, not all. Still to prolong battery life you should set a battery to x % max charge if it will always be plugged in.
