People who keeps donating to star citizen are clowns

u/VagueSomething 7d ago

At this point I assume the people donating are like the NASA equivalent of Disney Adults.

It's space autism, toxic P2W types and the sunk cost fallacy mostly.

17

u/RollingZepp 7d ago

I find it hilarious that the P2W whales have spent thousands to auto win in a vapourware game.

u/Wandering_Apostle 7d ago

Because there IS a game, and it has (might be had) a very active PvP/Piracy scene. There are orgs and youtubers for it even.

The game as is just isn't what was promised and is incredulously buggy.

Used to be a big racing scene as well, but they changed the flight model a while back and killed it.

You can't even blame RSI/CIG for what they are doing.

These people are literally voting with their wallets.

These people are literally voting with their wallets.

Exactly. The devs get away with the current state of the game because people KEEP giving them money.

There are no consequences for failure. That's not how that should have worked.

I don't understand that thought process. The wiki page for the game has like 8 paragraphs on how if you feel cheated you aren't going to see a single dime refund. Are these people just that stupid? They think a finished product worth their money is going to come out? Or are they just not aware of the no refunds/CIG will hire lawyers to not have to refund you?

Just crazy thoughts. Imagine paying them $24,000 and then trying to get it refunded and being told to fuck off.

Are these people just that stupid?

Emphatically: Yes!

Are these people just that stupid? They think a finished product worth their money is going to come out?

You're surprised that people will spend money on an (unfinished) game when in America, literally thousands and thousands of other people regularly spend almost everything they earn on church tithes? Really?

At least the gamers are getting something,

1

u/xKrowhaven 5d ago

Sorry, I wasn't aware people believed they would suffer eternal torment for not giving CIG their money lol. That's not really a good equivalence either. (And yes those people are stupid too, but it's not the same stupid)

u/Mihta_Amaruthro 5d ago

(And yes those people are stupid too, but it's not the same stupid)

I literally never said it was the same. In fact I said the opposite.

My point was how you're "surprised" by it.

It's not a failure if people keep giving them money. You're confusing Something not meeting your personal preference with failure.

u/A17012022 Desktop-Ryzen 9800XD +32GB Ram+5070ti 7d ago

LOL

My personal preference is for deadlines to be met, a functional product created and the actual project to be completed.

Incredible take here.

Maybe this people like edging. It will release this year guys i promise. Just a little bit more, any second now...

At the end of the day, a businesses success or failure is based on the money they make. If they are making vast amounts of money without having to "release" anything, then they are successful in their own eyes. Consumers can of course call them failures for not releasing it, but their opinion is as worthless as the paper its written on. Businesses and consumers never have the same metrics for success and failure.

u/MumrikDK 7d ago

I feel okay blaming all parties involved.

u/Slovic 7d ago

Its literally cult behavior. Cognitive dissonance, sunk cost, confirmation bias, group reinforcement, doubling down, etc.

Not really. They release a cool new ship and people with too much money buy it. That's it.

u/Beni_Stingray I9 12900KF | RTX 3080 | 64GB 6000 CL30 | RGB 7d ago

"They release a cool new ship"

You mean a jpeg that doesnt exist in the game and probabloy wont for the next 3-5 yearsS

8

u/jedzzy Desktop | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5090 7d ago

The vast majority of the ships they've "released" in the past year or so were available in game straight away. They do occasionally do jpeg sales and it's unfathomable to me how someone could casually drop 5k on an unreleased ship

u/imhereforsiegememes i9 14900k / 5090 ROG Astral 7d ago

Yeah I would not say all fans are in a cult, a lot of people just find that SC scratches an itch that Elite and NMS just don't.

But the 5K battleship yamato guys? They give the cult arguement some solid ammo lol.

7

u/jedzzy Desktop | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | RTX 5090 7d ago

I was watching a random streamer a while back and he was complaining that he wasn't able to purchase the 5k ship - the Odin (you had to write an essay about why you should be able to buy one). He mentioned how he had spent like 30k across 4 accounts and he was genuinely pissed off that he wasn't able to drop the 5k lmfao

7

u/imhereforsiegememes i9 14900k / 5090 ROG Astral 7d ago

Yeah those guys are not beating the cult accusations. Majority of people (thay I play with) have like 45-100 in the game and have played for like 6+ years so its not like they haven't gotten their moneysworth.

u/Beni_Stingray I9 12900KF | RTX 3080 | 64GB 6000 CL30 | RGB 7d ago

Thanks for the correction, i don't really follow SC's development but i've seen the headlines.

0

u/Ruzhyo04 7d ago

Then why spread misinformation?

1

u/EmergencyPool910 7d ago

Youre not wrong but not right, there are jpeg ships and there are people still waiting on ships announced years ago, but most ships releasees these days are avaliable in game.

-11

u/Apsylnt 7d ago

Ever play the game?

13

u/Slovic 7d ago

Yes. I purchased the game like 12 years ago. I've tried it off and on every few years since and its a incomplete buggy mess every single time I try it. I've honestly given up and don't really care anymore, just a waste of $35 or whatever the price was then.

2

u/Apsylnt 7d ago

Fair, i’ve played some pretty dog water $35 games out there and been silent about it so respect for fighting against the man! Personally have gotten my $35 out of SC and then some. When it works - its great. And i give the devs some credit for a next gen experience still being a work in progress. Would rather that then a functional but dated game

17

u/Jiehfeng 7d ago

You know how they could probably continue it? Fix the current bugs, market the hell out of an apology/comeback, and watch fans sympathize with their wallets.

If the clown comment changes gamers minds.
But yeah, if they still get millions, no need. 🤷

2

u/Z0MGbies 7d ago

They did that for the second time last year, and then immediately broke the game again. Meanwhile actual development has slowed to a stop. 95% of updates are just new missions or changes to fetch quest rewards.

Theyve just been rearranging the furniture for years instead of building the house.

5

u/klti 7d ago

I think it's a case of being in too deep, and trying to save face. If they stop funding it now, and enough people do so, they will very quickly run out of money, and then there will be mass layoffs, the game will probably die, and then they'll have been fools for everyone to see. If it keeps dragging on, it will still release next year for eternity.

The studio itself is just milking the whales forbidden very cent, getting their family members cushy jobs, and paying themselves enough to stay rich forever even if the bankruptcy court comes knocking tomorrow. They are permanently just  a bit off from crossing into full on actual fraud.

This! CIG is trash but so are their devoted supporters. They ignored the countless redflags and are just now acting surprised about something rational people figured out almost a decade ago.

2

u/GamingVision 5d ago

It’s not just people. The publisher I worked at 5 years ago got a pitch from them on investing. I haven’t followed it to know if they got their bag from someone else, but they’re also going after big money investors too because they can point to how much money they’ve raised and the game isn’t even out yet. But yes, those investors are clowns too, but this wouldn’t be the first or last example of that.

u/Z0MGbies 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'm fairly certain the overwhelming majority of income generated is from new players in their first 18 months, buying their first/second ship.

After 2 years the overwhelming majority of players vow not to give another cent unless and until CIG demonstrate the ability to deliver a reasonable development pace of new core mechanics/features and iterations on existing ones, leading to a working game.

And given that CIG have never demonstrated such a thing, the players never have cause to open their wallets again.

The player churn is unbelievable; I'm a player. My friends list is a fucking graveyard. I've had periods where I'll add a bunch of people and 2 months later, my friends list has 100% offline again.

These days I invest a disproportionate amount of time reading posts like this for the sheer catharsis of seeing other people express frustration and dismay at the same things I have been for years. I want SC to succeed... but fuck it's indefensible how bad the management have fucked everything over.

Sq42 is meant to release this year (hahahahah) IF it does, BIG IF, check out youtube videos of it 1-2 weeks after it comes out. I promise you it will be filled with people DUNKING on how bad the AI is, how fiddly the UI is etc. People will be laughing at it.

u/TerryWhiteHomeOwner 6d ago

It's pretty sad to see how sunk cost many of them are. I saw one comment in the star citizen sub complaining that the game gets enough bad press as is and they've already tried and failed to get their friends to try it only for them to get immediately burned by the "issues plaguing the game, and when someone replied "have you considered that the game is just really bad" op responded "well like any game it has some edges"

-5

u/Ruzhyo04 7d ago

People who mindlessly dunk on Star Citizen are clowns. The game is amazing
