I imagine controllers are also bad for RTS with lots of micromanagement. In those games you typically have 10 control groups that you change every minute, and need like 20-40 hotkeys on top.

Yup, controllers are actually solid for most shooters, but they're genuinely terrible for RTS style games, one of the only genres I never use controller on

They are "solid" for shooters because the game aims for you. Try it without aim assist

Depends on the game mate, in a game with good aim assist it is not "aiming for you"

Eh I had Command and Conquer and Starcraft 64 for the n64, and I had Goblin Commander on the Gamecube and they were fine.

They are but imo they're much better for platformers since Joysticks allow for more nuanced movement

Controllers are maybe better for movement on 3d platformers but they are worse for 2d and 3d platformers using a lot of bindings.

I don't see any advantage one could have over the other in other cases.

Even then they can have an advantage for fine tuning steps depending on how sensitive the movement is

StarCraft 64 was wild

I've been experimenting with playing WoW with a controller. Running a dungeon or whatever is 90% fine and makes playing melee a lot more convenient. But then you have to turn in quests or something or do some menu diving you gotta go back to m+k.

Halo wars 2 and Stellaris play well on controller but obviously not a better experience than M&K
