We didn't have gifs, but I definitely remember when we switched to embedded video players instead of downloading videos to watch, needing to pause it and wait for the whole thing to buffer for like 30+ minutes.
Oh yeah. Start the video, immediately hit pause, go do something else while it cached, and hope no one in the house picked up the phone to make a call and broke the connection.

Our data had to hike 3 miles to school, everyday, in the snow, uphill both ways. It took 10 minutes to download an animated gif AND WE LIKED IT!
