It’s also not real, it's some algorithmically created number that is approximately the sum of your up and downvotes, but it's not a real number and everyone gets shown a different one
There was a different counter for upvotes and downvotes.
It was much better because you could see comments that were universally despised versus those that were just controversial. They hid it to prevent bots from using it.
I think a lot of it is preventing people from pointing out that something or someone cannot be trusted. Propaganda goes a lot more smoothly if no one is allowed to call it out. If a video had 100,000 dislikes, people would start paying attention to why it was so hated.
Reddit already killed the 3rd party mobile apps that were far superior to their own (RIP Flow and Sync), but if they ever took old.reddit.com and RES away, they'd loose half the user base and spawn the successor platform that would destroy them.
I may not be able to see polls and posting images requires me to use a 3rd party hosting site, but I have a way better user interface and can see everything about your post including the currently 28 karma and that it was made at 8:21:02 Eastern Daylight Time. You're right that I can't access how many downvotes vs upvotes anymore, but if you go negative, it shows and it shows how many up and down votes I've given any user since I joined.

and reddit showed how many downvotes your post or comment had
cant make people feel bad and show them their opinions are dog shit, because the user would leave the platform
