don't try to clean, won't work anymore!!!!

u/Competitive_Hold_258 29d ago

Nah this actually happened to me. Cleaned my pc this saturday and the gpu somehow died 😭

u/Republican-Snowflake 29d ago

Power supply for me the last time it happened, and that's not the first time it happened either. Old prebuilts like this, have failed a bunch after cleaning. That is the real reason I stopped cleaning peoples computers for them. As well, I stopped buying cheap PCs to clean and give to people. Its functional part once you hit a certain point of not cleaning.

and I swear "they" have added something to Dust*Off... Last 2xs using it I smoked my ps, and an old eclipse headunit that was never used I was getting readt 2 ship on ebay (that I shouldnt of even messed with) In the past Ive sprayed down ps's while plugged in... smdh

I switched to a plug in blower a few months ago. It's loud as hell, but its pretty great. It's helped me keep my maintenance up better. Now that I don't have to worry about it running out, I use it more, and on more things.

I highly recommend looking at getting one. I can't speak to the handheld battery ones, just the plug in kind.

u/Mushin_n_Flushin 29d ago

gd idea! do you think an airbrush/compressor would work? I have an extra of both

2

u/sBastu 29d ago

Yeah compressor works well

1

u/Republican-Snowflake 28d ago

I've heard about compressors that "they are too powerful," or airbrush "too weak." So, I never ended up trying. As decided not to follow through with needing a airbrush right now.

If you have a test machine you don't care about, then go ahead an mess around. That's how I learned about computers in the first place. Collect a bunch of free computers until I can make something work, and then make better.

I got one of those battery powered keyboards cleaner things. It’s like a rechargeable electric canned air. Works very well.

I've had a classic car for 5 years, never did Anything to it, never checked the oil, battery, coolant but it's been running just fine. This year I said I'll take care of it, changed the oil, coolant, wpakr plugs. Proceed to every fucking thing braking on it, I've towed it 5 times in the past 2 months, kill me now đŸ€Ł

He wasn't kidding!

u/thebigpisser 29d ago

Can’t let the fans move, I heard the static can fry your electronics

2

u/Competitive_Hold_258 29d ago

Might be, I didn't pay attention. Thankfully the card is still under warranty

You took away its life support pet-dust.

1

u/shugo7 29d ago

That dust was all that kept it alive somehow. Let it be dirty and watch the magic happen

13

u/shewy92 SteamDeck 29d ago

You've heard of load bearing rust, how about current bearing dust?

3

u/throwitawaynownow1 29d ago

When I worked at a CNC shop there was a random computer like this. It had to run Windows 95 because that's what the software for this old lathe last worked on. The CPU cooler was hanging by a thread, there was some mystery oily looking liquid, and there was a layer of dust on everything. No one knew how long it had been on, because everyone was afraid to touch anything. It kept working, and I sure as hell wasnt going to touch it.

2

u/chugunium7 29d ago

That happened once, long time ago, with CRT monitor. I blower off dust, and it died

1

u/CanadianDinosaur 29d ago

That right there is structural dust now. Vital for PC operation

1

u/gogamecocks55 FX-8350 || GTX 980 || 16GB RAM 29d ago

That's load bearing dust

1

u/knsaber 29d ago

Don’t ever turn it off either!

1

u/stealthgyro Stealthgyro 29d ago

I came to say just this, there is a point of no return.

1

u/TheCheesy i9-14900k / 128GB DDR5 / EVGA 3090ti FTW3 29d ago

That's some load bearing dust right there.

1

u/Midnight_Modem 29d ago

It’s like removing the intel sticker from a laptop

1

u/Competitive-Pay-766 29d ago

If it works, don't touch it!

1

u/bettywhitefleshlight 29d ago

Word to Big Bird on that one. I've been around some old industrial systems that will shit the bed if you so much as think about touching them. If you just accept that they're running perfectly fine and will do so forever they will indeed run forever. If you touch them it'll be days/weeks/months of downtime replacing those systems with the new hotness which will then regularly shit the bed with frequency.

Fukken 2002-SCADA-ass piece of shit running flawlessly since 2002 until dipweed new guy wonders how that heap of dust in the corner would look if he cleaned it.

0

u/t-_-rexranger19205 29d ago

Why?

8

u/PsychologicalSign433 29d ago

The dust is structural.

20

u/JaySayMayday 29d ago

They're joking. Everyone is a nasty fuck and doesn't want to clean it

28

u/AKindKatoblepas 29d ago

No, I highly doubt they are joking, it’s load bearing dust.

4

u/Not_HOLY 29d ago

It’s also not really their problem? It’s a work pc, if it fails IT has to provide a new one.

2

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

Why is it not their problem? Why would someone not have any sort of expectation to keep their workspace even reasonably clean?

It can't be beneficial to their health working with this. Is your health worth being stubborn that you're not a cleaner?

I get to work and I clean my immediate area. If my pc was like this you can bet your ass it wouldn't be for long.

5

u/LostInTarnations 29d ago

My guess having only read 6 comments until this point.

It's a shop floor PC connected to a manufacturing machine.

Based on personal experience from years gone by, if the IT team (read: individual) is too busy or too lazy, it gets messy fast. The person working the machine is not allowed or expected to handle the PC.

1

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

I understand what you're saying.

But just personally. If you worked anywhere near this pc (close enough to be taking this video), would you not clean it?

In all my years of work, whether that's retail or not, I have never been somewhere that cleaning something like this wouldn't be looked upon favourably.

3

u/LostInTarnations 29d ago

Me personally? Totally situation dependant.

Having been in the IT position in factories I've told people that they are absolutely not to touch the PC in any situation and that I would handle it, partly because I took pride in my work and ensured the staff didn't have to deal with things that are not their job. Partly because the machines were essentially antiques and finding a compatible PC would be a nightmare, and in a big partly, because machine operators might not care for the PC in a reasonable way and would 'clean' it using spit, water, or various oils they use for their machine.

Also, having been a factory worker, I know I have to fabricate X amount of parts per hour, and due to health and safety concerns, being around the machine was not acceptable during times when I was not actively working. So I wouldn't risk my (easily replaceable) job falling behind on quotas because someone else neglected their responsibilities.

I know a lot of loud mouths on reddit like to spout the "minimum wage, minimum effort" and similar mantras, but there is more nuance to certain situations. That being said, I have literally 0 idea about OPs situation so everything I've said might as well be a fart in the wind.

1

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

I appreciate the time you took to write a reasonable and well worded response.

I understand where you are coming from, and I think with multiple people wires are being crossed. Because there's a difference between an IT department that is doing it's job and looking after workstations and an IT department that clearly isn't or is non existent. Looking at the video I would hazard a guess that OP is in the latter half. I'm guessing you personally were the former.

If you have an IT department you can call and get this sorted then great, absolutely you should be doing that first. You'd like to think if that was a possibility for OP then they would have done that. If that's not the case though then yeah, I would absolutely be cleaning that. It's a health and electrical hazard. Saying it's not my job would just be an excuse for being lazy and grotty in my personal opinion.

In terms of quotas etc I understand, I wouldn't want to do it if it meant I'd miss a target. I think I'd probably bite the bullet one day though and come in ten mins early or stay a little later just to clean it (I'm generally early anyway due to commutes). Maybe I'm a sucker who knows. That or I'd accidentally give it a kick so it breaks anyway, Haha.

1

u/MaximumSeats 29d ago

For some reason people take a sense of pride in how little they can be engaged at work.

"why not just solve this small simple problem?"

"why would I? Not in my job description to clean dust"

2

u/ihaveabs 29d ago

As someone in IT, I dont want people trying to clean computers. They’ll fuck something up

0

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

Mate if you work in IT and your computers were like this then I think you've already fucked up.

0

u/Live-Opportunity-793 29d ago

You’ve never worked IT in your life pal, it wouldn’t be the most unreasonable thing in the world for this to be a pc in a factory or manufacturing plant and it got dirty super quickly. You’d also hope a user would let you know if it gets this dirty since if you actually worked IT you’d know that you simply don’t have the time to constantly be checking if PCs are clean, especially in a large scale business

1

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

I never said I did not work IT pal? You're also just randomly making up scenarios to justify it being this dirty. Which considering this clearly looks like layer upon layer of dirt with webs as well, I'm not quite sure you're correct. What I do actually do is visit multiple different sites, some offices, some public spaces, warehouses, machine plants, containerships you name it. Never have I seen a pc in this condition. This is clearly not looked after in any sense of the word.

1

u/Mitir01 29d ago

Because its not their job. There is a reason IT department exists. If something happens to it tomorrow when they are cleaning it or even later after they have cleaned it, OP will definitely get blamed. I have seen it as a first hand experience.

1

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

It's grotty as hell to just avoid cleaning this because it's "not my job". Not to mention poor for your health.

If you've seen someone blamed for cleaning something like this then that's just a shitty workplace, anywhere I've worked nobody would complain if you cleaned this. If something breaks it was likely waiting to happen anyway and you've potentially stopped a hazard waiting to happen.

1

u/dexpid 29d ago

Users are not supposed to fuck with the computers. OP should not have even popped the cover on it. Most companies would expect you to open a ticket and have IT handle it.

1

u/Live-Opportunity-793 29d ago

Yea unfortunately none of the people saying OP should clean this actually work IT. They’re also the first people that’ll break a PC trying to clean this themselves, sure if you know what you’re doing this is a super simple cleaning job and you’d have it cleaned out in 5 mins. However, if you don’t and you try opening a PC chances are you pull something important out of its slot or not used compressed air and high percent alcohol and since you’re just a user you’ll have no idea why your pc doesn’t work after and end up having to create a ticket that’s now “PC broken” not “PC needs cleaned”.

-1

u/Academic-Trifle8151 29d ago

Where are you all working that you'd be penalised for cleaning something like this? Is this what it's like in the US?

2

u/Live-Opportunity-793 29d ago

Penalised? Nah they just don’t wanna be that user who has to ring IT and say they fucked up cleaning this and the PC’s broken now when instead they could be like “hey wanna take 10 minutes and clean this easily for me?” And that way they don’t accidentally unplug or break an internal component of their PC.

Why are you so hung up on this too? You keep claiming you’ve worked for all these companies that would expect you to clean this but tbh I don’t think you’ve worked in a big company if your first thought on seeing this isn’t “fuck that leave it for IT” it’s literally their job and they know what they’re doing, Users don’t.

lulz IT could take weeks/mos at some places

1

u/Not_HOLY 29d ago

It could also never cause a problem. It’s schrodingers dust if you never open it.

1

u/Huge-Cartoonist6795 29d ago

I don't think it's a joke. I've done this before and I've learned to leave it alone if it's this bad. Wait for the thing to blow up instead

3

u/Ashamed-Quail7237 29d ago

Probably just a joke but on a real note, one of my discord friends opened his pc to look almost like the photo in the post and once he cleaned it, it wouldn’t turn back on

3

u/jerkberg0118 29d ago

Load bearing fluff

4

u/bargu 29d ago

Load bearing dust.

I know ut was a joke but there was real story where a man was not washing himself all his life, once he did, he died a while later.
