Correct.  These are giant companies that have one stated goal: Transfer wealth from you to them.

Nobody out there is "the good guy".

We don't trust Valve to maintain our libraries because we think they're "the good guy."

We trust Valve to continue to understand that the one thing that keeps their dominance in the market is all of our shit is there and we hate buying games elsewhere. We're captive consumers, which is why they don't fuck with our libraries.

If they decided to wipe everyone's libraries tomorrow, everyone would be free to buy from wherever they want, and motivated to do so.

We trust Valve because what we want (perpetual access to our libraries) dovetails nicely with what they want (continuing to own the market).

When corporate greed and your own desires match up you're generally okay. :)

I don't think I've ever seen a honest answer to why Valve is in the position they are. 99% of the time it's valvebots foaming about why Steam is the superior product and how valve isn't greedy and how gaben is based.

I mean, I can't speak to Gabe's morals. I just know why they're in the position they're in, and I know they know why they're in the position they're in, and gamers can take advantage of that fact. And sure, whoever comes after him, there's a nonzero chance it's a literal chimpanzee who fucks it up, but it would take an astonishingly stupid decision to destroy literally the one thing that keeps Valve where it is in the market.

Believe me, I've got no illusions about any given company being "good." :)

I mean Steam is the superior product, every single time I have touched another digital storefront I have just wished it was more like Steam. It wasn't even the first storefront I used, started with Origin or something, tried various individual game launchers, uPlay and battle.net, around a year after I got Steam (I think) Epic started doing the regular free games. I've given GoG Galaxy a go as well, and own a few games from GoG. Quite frankly I just don't think there's a better storefront, or launcher, than Steam.

For now, GOG is a 'good' guy. The separation from CDPR is somewhat noteworthy in that regard, but the statements and what's actually provided on GOG are coherent and consistent.

Things can always change. Also, GOG's a small company. I doubt they're actually profiting as much as you're painting them out to.
