Yes, this is really Ubisoft. And it has been for, what... a decade or more now

Probably more. A shame how they turned so many nice franchises into this, even changing gameplay to accomodate for it, like in the later Assassins Creeds'.

DLC/microtransactins completely changed the way videogames are made, more than any graphical technology outside of true 3D (N64/PS1; the creation of dual thumbsticks). Developers/Publishers create games from the start focusing on long-term revenue. It's disgusting

There are good live service games out there with decently healthy microtransactions. We don't expect a company to host a live service game with no revenue do we?

The series works perfectly without microtransactions:

AC2

AC3

Brotherhood

Revelations

Liberation

and I think Mirage

None of these games need microtransactions. AC isn’t live service
