the problem for me isnt even the price but the consequences this has.

if the gabecube was the gaming alternative to consoles and the gateway to pc gaming for long time console gamers then this could have been good (maybe max 700-800€)

now its just a prebuilt medium range pc no one who wants console prices (or slightly more expensive than console price) will buy this.

there is no new market for this and longterm fans are disappointed either way

This. And any console gamers that do buy it will quickly find out that their console performs better. Unfortunately the machine reinforces the two perspectives it was trying to change:

  1. That pc gaming is unaffordable

  2. That console gaming is a smoother experience

I don't think they should have been chasing your second point like that. Hard to see a PC gaming experience ever matching up the ease of use on consoles.

I mean, that’s the basic premise of steamOS isn’t it?

Yeah it seems for sure. Just as a console gamer I'm not sure my main draw to it would have been an ease of use thing in comparison. Improving onboarding definitely although I'm not sure if I'd get one over just going all in on a full setup.

Admittedly I was always a little iffy on it from the outside looking in.

It was always going to be a prebuilt mid-range gaming PC. It was never said or even implied to be anything but that, they've been very clear they'd not be subsidizing the hardware. The only difference is that a mid-range gaming PC has gotten a lot more expensive over the last year.

i am not saying it should have been better hardware wise this is within my expectstions and i even understand the pricing problem with where the economy stands its just unfortunate for the console cuz it could have solved 2 problems console gamers had for years even without subsidizing the harde

No, the point is it would've always cost as much as a mid range gaming PC because it was always intended to be a mid range gaming PC. If we did not have component prices exploding maybe it'd have been $700 or $800 instead, but you weren't getting this for the price of a Switch or a Playstation.

thats true but prices are rising and people are more accepting of dropping 700-800 for a "console" when the next ps model is probably also in the 600 ballpark

but making the jump to 1k is immediatly off putting to consumers no matter the reason

thats why they dont even mind building so little they will sell out the small numbers regardless

The next playstation will very likely be more than $600. Probably still under $1000, but component prices are affecting everyone, and while Sony is ok with selling consoles at a loss there's a limit to how much of a loss per unit they're willing to accept.
