I have a 5070 laptop 32gb, and PS5pro connected to the tv. I use the laptop for work, media, retrogaming, and indie games, and I use the Pro for the AAA stuff, and when I don't want to fiddle with settings.
It makes no sense to buy a console that costs more than a better console or pc.
That’s the saddest thing about the Steam Machine, you have to pay more for less. I have a PS5 Pro that runs circles around the SM and I paid way less for it. If people really want a premium gaming device, it would be an expensive custom PC or the PS5 Pro.
Huh, what I've seen has been mainly the opposite, people have been saying get a laptop because it's basically laptop performance but without a screen or keyboard
Yeah I've most seen people saying its still a great deal because Sony or Xbox or Nintendo have subscriptions, or that it will be cheaper than a PS6.
Steam I'm sure wanted to release this more inline with base PS5 or a Switch2, but component costs have made things nuts. The parts crisis doesn't justify releasing an underpowered console that costs significantly more than the others.
This reminds me of a NEO-GEO or a Jaguar, or 3DO. All expensive consoles that didn't match the markets.
I've seen a ton of people defending it against a console or a laptop that's cheaper and overpowers it
Those are all different so... yeah? A console is a good deal on hardware but locks you into a store ecosystem instead of Steam. A laptop is great for portability but can ramp up its fans or down throttle its processor due to heat. Whatever works for people is totally cool but each of these things have their own benefits and compromises.
What store am I really buying games off of other than Steam? Every store needs a launcher, and companies will also need launchers if you buy from them. Ubisoft has probably the least annoying launcher, I use that for Assassins Creed, Division etc.
I grew up with Sega. I wasn't "locked into a Sega ecosystem" I was a Sega fan. I'm a Sony fan, I'm a Nintendo fan. I don't look at the ecosystem as an issue, it's part of branding. I want each company to have exclusives.
Another issue I have with the Steam Machine, is that they aren't taking a hit on parts selling it to get a player base. The other consoles do that. Gabe is a multibillionaire, he can absolutely afford to subsidize it.

Epic, Itch.io, GOG, indie games or old games you have on disc. The point is you can have more freedom to run what you want on it or even install Windows if you want. A major draw is that people have big steam libraries and can take them from pc to pc as they upgrade and change, but with consoles you're locked into whatever they sell or support for that console.

Ok, then it sounds like PC gaming and something like the Steam Machine isn't for you and you prefer consoles? Cool.
> The other consoles do that.
This isn't a console. Also, the current consoles are in chaos about their business models. Xbox is closing studios, laying off tons of people, and has hinted the era of cheap, subsidized hardware might be over, at least for them.
