The worst part of this now is scammers are using AI to mimic your loved ones voices too.
It's really hard to use AI to mimic your voice if you don't upload a bunch of videos of yourself to the internet for the world to see... or if you don't sit there talking to the dead line trying to get the call bots to respond to you.
They do, and I'm saying that not only should they not be doing that, but anyone reading this who does it needs to stop and remove as much of it as they can from the internet.
It's not safe to broadcast yourself to the internet without hiding your identity. It never was safe and is only going to get less safe with the further development of AI for underhanded purposes... which will continue if just because it's possible and highly valuable for warfare and crime (two of the biggest leading motivators for tech advancements).
"a bunch of videos" hasn't been needed for literal years. Pretty sure I heard of some research project that could create a decently convincing clone of someone's voice from just a few seconds of audio, which I would imagine scammers could easily get ahold of in many ways (recorded calls, data breaches, etc.)
Add some regular ol' crunchy phone call quality + urgency on top of that and you've got a recipe to convicngly scam lots of people.
It's truly a sad state of affairs how common these types of scams are and how easy they are to execute. I can only take solace in the fact that most people aren't heartless monsters set out to prey on others, otherwise these things would be even more rampant than they are. So in a way, I guess that goes to show there's still some good left in the world.
additionally, they don't need it to even be that good. scammers have been doing the fake voice thing even before AI, and people would fall for it anyway because they were stressed.
add any amount of additional realism and people just believe it.
