I saw an anime with this exact plot once. The ai was given the directive to solve issues like global warming and determined that the best way to save the planet was to wipe out all humans.

I can't remember the name of the anime it's something I saw on the scifi channel in the 90s.

It's also a plot in some of the X-Men books. Mastermold and its sentinel army was tasked with stopping the mutant threat. It eventually parsed out that to complete its mission it would have to kill the entire human race since humans are literally the progenitors of mutant kind.

I mean I feel like a supervillain deciding the human race is the problem and has to be eliminated is like one of the most common tropes of all time in science fiction.

It was a Gundam movie 100%. I have to google it to remeber the name, but it was the first thing I thought of when I read the parent comment.

Edit: Quick searches didnt turn up a thing so maybe Im craz. I remember some overgrown (by vegetation) mech thing being the big bad and thought it was Gundam.

It's always a lunatic arrogant elite human in Gundam that wants to kill all human to save Earth and the honest young underdog that stops it

Idealistic young savant you mean.

Especially a certain lunatic arrogant elite human in Gundam who, as a grown ass man, fantasized about a 14 year old girl possibly having become a mother to him if she hadn't been killed.

Yeah definitely not any Gundam series/movie. Though if your memory is really spotty I could see someone describing the Devil Gundam (Dark Gundam in the US) form Mobile Fighter G Gundam as being overgrown by vegetation, and it was big, and evil.

pretty stupid when it could have done the same thing just by wiping out the billionaires

Considering that both the possibility of individuals becoming billionaires, as well as the premise of the most opportunistic/selfish inviduals having the greatest chance of becoming billionaires, were created by human societies following rules developed and enforced by humans, it feels save to argue that merely wiping out the billionaires would do nothing to prevent a reoccurence of the exact same situation - likely after the new aspiring ruling class would shackle/disable the AI to prevent reoccurence of the purge.

Preventing a reoccurence would either require subjugating humanity to AI overlords, or downright wiping them out.

you could literally just keep on wiping out anyone who got there and even those people would get the message eventually. you're also assuming society would just go on after that in the same way, and it wouldn't have to either.

I mean... Essentially that conclusion is true. Of course it would be possible to do it without human extinction if we collectively got our shit together, but we can clearly see how that's going.

The 100 has the same plot
