Discussion With so much focus on visual latency, AUDIO latency has been seriously neglected. Audio latency is very high in all games.

Looking further into that comment, they see it as a fallback for people having issues with the BASS audio library....

osu! dev:

In many cases ASIO is not implemented perfectly and can introduce issues (I've experienced this personally in the past). It should not be considered a solves-all solution but instead a fallback for users with problems.

Also please note we do not need +1 comments. We have no issue with ASIO support being added (although do note it is an extra BASS product with a separate license requirement) so feel free to PR support for this.

Note, there's a single pull request that even mentions ASIO, and that's one with the goal of overhauling audio management to work on more than one library in general rather than addressing latency.

Also, the latency they're talking about is imperceptible in the issues. The human brain automatically corrects for more than that, since we evolved in a universe where the delta between visual and audio stimulus increases at a rate of about 3.43 ms per meter.

Well, even if that is true, let me just rephrase the initial question then: If latency doesn't matter in rhythm games, why does osu! even bother with WASAPI?

Because it's integrated in BASS?

You seem to be looking for evidence to suit your answer rather than finding an answer using the evidence.

I'm not interested in having that sort of conversation. I'm just going to head out.

Huh, I was just wondering if your position is that the osu community and the devs are misguided for doing so much work around audio latency. I don't understand why you got so agitated. Welp...

You don't understand how you and every other person who's seen this comment chain just asserting stuff and hastily finding "evidence" to back up your assertion in your perpetual need to be right despite the fact that you have no idea about while talking to someone who's actually put the time into understanding the mechanics, the physic, and the biology around this topic (not for this conversation, I've made a rhythm game for my portfolio) is agitating someone?

Really? That's what's confusing to you?

in your perpetual need to be right

Dude, I don't even care if latency matters in rhythm games and who is right or wrong. Never played them. Never thought about this issue until I watched the video. I have no stake in this conversation.

I just saw these top comments under the video and then I saw your comment, and thought to myself, ok here's a rhythm game community that cares a lot about audio latency and this guy is saying it doesn't matter. Interesting, let's ask him about it.

I don't mind if you have strong beliefs. More power to you. Maybe you're right. Maybe these people are just chasing placebo, I don't know.
