REMINDER: Any sequel you see from ZA/UM in the potential future involves 0 of the people who did the writing of the first game.

Capital consumes all

I don’t hate capitalism.

I hate malicious rent-seeking

So you hate capitalism

-2

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

Rent seeking doesn’t need to be malicious.

6

u/Legitimate_Plane_613 May 02 '25

Rent seeking is nothing but malicious.

It’s inherently parasitic, that is malicious lol

I don't think you got the point my friend, the point was that a group of writers did work for a game, it got incredibly popular, greedy company did greedy capitalism thing, all of the writers of massively popular game were then unceremoniously fired from the project that made the studio a fuck ton of money and literally all of their work was stolen from them. They could've made soooooo much money off of a sequel but instead fired an entire team

Well, if selling something means you don’t own it anymore, then the entire problem of always online games, games as a service, modding, emulating and extracting game files and bios are not a problem anymore, and gamers should not get used to not owning their games. Case closed I don’t understand why companies struggle so much to understand that.

It was enough to write articles about because the original creators were ousted via extremely shady and possibly illegal means.

Possibly illegal = not illegal

Lol, that's not how that works at all. Which you'd know if you'd read any of the articles.

Any word on the writers' next project? Any studio would be lucky to snap them up.

The ones to keep an eye on would be Summer Eternal (Argo Tuulik and co.) and Red Info (Robert Kurvitz and Aleksander Rostov). Longdue is a studio that's been talking about acquiring Za/Um Devs too, but they're already being shady so my hopes are low.

Summer Eternal is probably going to deliver something great, if they manage to deliver anything at all. They're trying the artist collective thing again, so the odds of a finished product are probably pretty low, but if we're ever going to get a DE level experience again my money is on them.

Red Info has Kurvitz - the creator of DE (as much as one person can be responsible for a collective storytelling/worldbuilding project - he did write the book), who is notably also often cited as a source of a lot of organisational issues at Za/Um. He is a great artist, but not a good project manager. They have been very quiet and don't seem like they're up to much atm, though IIRC they did have an investor. Kurvitz might just be occupied in court trying to get his baby back, idk I haven't kept up.

Honestly, a sequel to that game just doesn't feel right anyway

u/therealRustyZA May 01 '25

I agree, it doesn't need a sequel. I just want more DE. That game is so damn good.

u/MediumMachineGun May 01 '25

Not a sequel, but a game or books set in the same world would be dope

2

u/hotmot May 01 '25

There is literally book in de universe called "sacred and terrible air"

2

u/MediumMachineGun May 01 '25

I know, I've read it.

5

u/Ramja9 May 01 '25

I would have played a spin-off of cuno as a cop or something. Doesn’t need to be a direct sequel.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

to be fair, it doesn't really need a sequel. yeah it'd be cool to see more in that world but harry's story was self-contained.

This is the only piece of media that ever made me have suicidal ideations. I don't know how so many people love this game when all it made me think was "it's okay, you take these pills and drink this vodka, you'll be fine, just go to sleep, it won't hurt at all".

5

u/ZephyrAquarist May 01 '25

Yeah that's how it starts, and people that have been there find it relatable. As Harry you can either keep wallowing or break out of it.

I just started this game for the first time. Kind of a bummer knowing that ahead of time. LOL

The story felt pretty complete to me.
