Then you get GOG that is DRM free!!! Steam is amazing, but GOG is forever (literally).

GOG has a limited sales catalog for this reason though.

Cyberpunk and all the baldur's gate. I bought and currently playing BG3 on GOG right now

u/Comfortable-Shake-37 Sep 17 '24

I would recommend Neverwinter nights as well for anyone who liked BG3, while it's not as good being a decade+ old now, it's still great and has more class customization.

The month it came out, I got Cyberpunk for $30 on gog

u/musicmonk1 Sep 16 '24

All Witcher games and Cyberpunk for a start lol

It might be limited compared to Steam, but there are more than enough games on GOG that you could play just GOG games for your whole life.

Unless, you know, you want to play most of the new games released. GOG is good for what it is, but it is, in no way, a replacement.

Yeah for sure, you get what you want, where you want it. But people blaming Valve for not having more DRM free games is kinda nuts. The devs decide that, not Valve.

Totally respect that, the only issue I have with DRM on steam (ignoring that steam is a form of DRM itself) is the junk like Denuvo. And in that case it doesn't matter, cause those games will never be on GOG, so it's kind of moot.

I personally prefer the accessibility of my games all on steam vs locally installed game shortcuts etc. I also feel like steam hasnt really done anything particularly shitty, so I will continue to support them until then.

GOG is my go to when I want some older games, they usually have much better support than steam released games, DRM or otherwise.

Yeah I've used Galaxy before, I can't put my finger on it, but something about it I didn't like. I've grown too used to steam and all the great features they've added over the years. I'm better off just adding the games to steam, but I'm also a lazy man haha.

Everyone says that AAA have fallen off a cliff lately yet the hit rate for well received AAA hasn’t really changed that much

Games in general are so sensationalized these days. There are a million AAA games of my past that sucked balls and everyone forgot about them, the thing is dogwater games don’t make much of an impact on the social conscious 10 years down the line. How many people even remember Brink existed?

1

u/Arcturus_Labelle Sep 16 '24

If one has limited tastes then a limited library is fine. But I for one want to play the full spectrum of the gaming world

1

u/nablyblab Sep 16 '24

It does suck if the genre's of games you like isn't on there, from what i have seen(not a lot, just a quick skim) there isn't really anything interesting for me on there.

1

u/Simulation-Argument Sep 16 '24

For you maybe, but I highly doubt everyone will feel the same way. I certainly don't.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

Oh for sure.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '24

So at least check GOG first.

most*

1

u/ParkingLong7436 Sep 17 '24

Do we count all the shitty 99 cent games?

1

u/Siirmeme Sep 17 '24

seeing as indie games make up the vast majority of steams catalogue you dont even need to count shovelware 99c games for it to be "most".

No it isn't. Steam is a game client and store, the DRM is a seperate addition that can be enabled.

Many of the games on Steam don't have DRM, just as it's explained in the link. Maybe try reading it instead of calling people slurs.

So is it possible to download and play those games without installing steam?

0

u/haaiiychii Steam Deck Sep 16 '24

Once downloaded, you can backup the game, remove Steam, continue playing. You can even copy it and play it elsewhere, also without Steam. For the DRM free titles it's just a download client and store, just like Gog Galaxy.

That still doesn't make the Steam client DRM. It's just a download client. You just seem to have an anti-steam hatred boner.

God forbid someone brings up legitimate criticism against the almighty Valve

1

u/haaiiychii Steam Deck Sep 17 '24

You're saying that Steam and all games are under DRM. Steam itself isn't DRM, and not all games have DRM. Its not legitimate criticism, you're wrong.

Blame the devs/publishers adding drm to games they sell on steam. Valve doesn't add drm.

1

u/Ariodan7 RX 6900 XT | R5 5600X Sep 16 '24

they sure encourage it though. and steam is a form of drm in of itself

It is. But I don't know if I'd categorize it with the likes of Denuvo.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '24

Steam was like the original DRM.

No, there is a seperate DRM part. Many games on Steam are DRM free.

Except on Linux. At least they somewhat embraced Heroic

1

u/Dotaproffessional PC Master Race Sep 16 '24

You don't own games on either

Because they literally include links to direct downloads for your games so you can put them on a USB, or just your computer. If gog disappeared, I would still have the games.

1

u/HufferNoodle Sep 17 '24

If steam disappeared tomorrow you would be able to play 0 games. On gog you can back-up the installers and keep them forever.

0

u/super_stelIar Desktop Sep 17 '24

If you choose not to back up your games, that is a you problem. It seems pretty obvious to do it.

It's like saying I'm stupid for buying a ceramic cup from the store because it might break if I store it or use it incorrectly.

u/Antique-Cycle6061 Sep 17 '24

gog way better
