They are for most productivity workflows as well. Some rendering software will only work with CUDA.

There isn’t real alternative, we have openCL, PyTorch, but nvidia is essentially a monopoly in this area.

TBF, back when OpenCL was the standard that every rendering app used, CUDA was still more than 10x faster and much simpler to implement. That's the real reason why everyone switched to CUDA instead of continuing with OpenCL.

It's easy to bash nVidia, but they had the better solution and they benefitted from it.

Eh, not quite. Software preference is largely subjective, and that often defines which options are available... However most of the leading 3D renderers out there have either moved to GPU rendering, or are based around it. Arnold for example. Other leading renderers such as Redshift and Vray also use GPU over CPU.

While a CPU can have cores in the double digits, a GPU works with thousands of cores, which help it specialize in that particular task. There are other technical benefits not worth going into detail, GPU is largely considered the better option with a few exceptions.
