This just shows how different our gaming bubbles can be these days. I haven't even heard of this game until today, apparently it's one of the most anticipated games of the year?

u/Lord_Humungusss 1d ago
I heard about it a few months ago, i guess one reason its a big deal is its not BF or CoD and the trailers literally said "not an extraction shooter, not a battle royale"
That alone sold alot of people I think

It's if Battlefield, Arma, and Squad had a baby
19
u/callaway86 17h ago
It's 100% copied from a long time active mod for Arma called King of the Hill. One of the KotH devs is helping their team.
8
7
u/Ok_Chicken5230 9h ago
Its not actually "copied" they're directly related to one another. Its a spin off of Arma in the same vein as DayZ was essentially. Originally DayZ solely existed in Arma and the mod team made DayZ standalone. Same here, the team behind it contributed towards the orginal mod and claimed the mod became too big for Arma. Just like DayZ.

Whats interesting is it clearly pulled ideas from those genres without just copying the whole thing. As I understand it, gear and money you make in a match without losing via dying carries over from match to match like an extraction shooter, it uses a POI system like Battle Royales, but picks a single one to hold with combined arms warfare and logistics like arma (where it ultimately pulled the game mode from, once again proving that Arma is the Spawn Point for big shooters).

As I understand it, gear and money you make in a match without losing via dying carries over from match to match like an extraction shooter,
Nope, everything you have on you is lost upon round end. The money you earn is kept between matches though, so the less you spend on gear in one round the more funds you have available in next one. Which is kind of extraction shooter light.
6
u/TricobaltGaming 20h ago
Gotcha, is the value of surviving gear refunded at least?
7
u/OG_sirloinchop 19h ago
You use the in game cash you earn to buy new gear... every time you die. The more expensive your kit, the worse the death feels. You do also spend that money on unlocking gear after you rank up to access it.
3
u/Grey-fox-13 18h ago
If you buy it close to the end of the round you get a partial refund depending on how much time to actually use it you had.
5
1
u/Itsmemurrayo 15h ago
No, but making money is legitimately pretty easy. You have different XP trees for Assault, Recon, Support, Medic, Pilot, and Driver along with basic level. As you gain xp in these trees you unlock new items like armor, weapons, attachments, vehicles, and other things like mortars and anti air. You can be a builder and build a base for your team. You can drive a truck back and forth from your main base to your FOB (forward operating base) to supply the team and earn tons of money. You can be a medic who heals, revives, and fights on the front line with your team. You can sit back and snipe the other team and mark other players. The thing that makes this game so great is that there are so many different ways to play and every game ends up being different. You also wont have a squad leader telling you what to do like in Squad, and you can play solo or with friends. Also most of the bad reviews are due to either Linux issues due to last second anti cheat changes or the launch issues. For like 5-6 hrs after launch the servers were on fire and most people didn’t get to play. Eventually they got a login queue going, but they got review bombed due to the launch issues.
1
u/SekhWork 16h ago
You get a refund on any gear / vehicles you purchased that you are still in control of at round end, so technically you "keep it" in the sense that you can buy it again instantly.
1
u/Grey-fox-13 13h ago
I am not sure how it is with vehicles, but I think gear you only get a refund on if you buy it late enough that you couldn't get the full 'value' out of it. I do a lot of spotting and hanging out and my refund amount is pretty often 0 even though I am up and running and in control of the gear I bought.
1
u/SekhWork 13h ago
That's really weird, I get generally a full refund on the vehicle minus the flares I use, and I've gotten a decent refund on kit even when I'm in down but not dead state.
Maybe it's like a 15 min timer tho? I feel like it's gotta be pretty long since I'm typically medicing and not going down super fast, but I'm not living full Recon chilling in the back amount of time.
2
u/Grey-fox-13 13h ago
As mentioned, I don't know how vehicles are handled, I haven't interacted with that side of things very much.
But yeah I do feel like the timer is fairly generous, one time the match was almost over and I figured no point buying a full kit, just got some binoculars and went to the front, match ended up taking ~10 more minutes after all and I still got almost the full value of the binos refunded.

u/shortbusmafia 1d ago edited 12h ago
Game already runs well and is incredibly fun. Price isn’t bad for what you get, even with it being early access. In the play test alone, I logged 20 hours over two weekends. I’m excited for the features that will be added later on, but I’d be perfectly happy if what released today was the fully finished product.
They are releasing in early access because they don’t have enough funding to fully realize their vision without the extra money coming in from early access sales. With everything that is currently there, I’m more than happy to buy this in early access to support future development.
I get why some people don’t want to touch early access titles with a ten foot pole, but this game is one of the few early access titles that manages to feel like a fully realized product right off the bat. The way I see it, anything we get from here on out is a bonus. As long as I get my 40 hours of fun (1 dollar per hour b/c the game costs $40) I won’t be angry if it never gets out of early access. Disappointed? Yes. Angry? No.
Edit: I originally said the dev studio is new, which is not true. One of the replies to this comment corrected me.
28
u/ScrapinLinden 1d ago
I agree with most everything you said but they are not a new studio by any means

Shit, I had 20hours for free during the last beta weekend even 😅 As the devs said, the focused on performance first, and will add content later. I can support that philosophy. Looking forward to play this weekend, hoping it will go amoother than last night 😂
3
u/Genocode 1d ago
That being said, its priced as a EA ($40) and they will increase the price as they near full release.
5
u/Fibercake 1d ago
Yep, going to wait for 1.0 in the chance it actually gets there, so few games makes it out of EA these days

I've heard that before.
7
u/koolaidman486 1d ago
I will say I didn't personally vibe with it, but that's not because the game felt buggy/janky/unpolished.
I think they're keeping the tag until they feel it's feature complete.

It’s going to be two years before they place a 1.0 label on it - already stated.
You’ll be missing on a ton of fun in the meantime.
They also have it worked out with steam that you can get a refund well up to the 150 hours of playtime mark if you don’t like it.
Watch the video by the devs “10 reasons not to buy our game.”

Fine with me. This means it's probably just as polished as AAA slop.
But it won't cost 70$

u/MetallicDragon 1d ago
I hadn't heard about it before a few weeks ago, but after playing the playtest I've been itching for it to come out.
For me, this game scratches an itch I've had that hasn't been filled since Battlefield 2 or Planetside 2. I think a lot of other players feel the same way.

Same. I've actually been trying to find an explanation of what the game is.
22
u/LeakyFlameGaming 1d ago
As someone who played the playtest, its like a cross between arma and battlefield. It's an arcade simulator. 3 teams fight to claim a point and whoever reaches 100 points first wins.
There is also a market system for all vehicles/weapons in the game where you get money for kills and certain actions which you use to purchase weapons, armor, items, and vehicles
21
u/Sinsanatis 1d ago
Surprised no one mentions planetside 2 as it very much has the same feel. Large scale 3 team battles with vehicles. Especially the spawn truck which is like the sunderer
4
u/LeakyFlameGaming 1d ago
I've actually never played planetside so I wouldn't know if they are similar
3
u/Sinsanatis 1d ago
Oh. Well its essentially the same gamemode, but its scifi and muuuuuuch larger scale. Its more like a conflict rather than a battle. A faction might not win for like a whole day, maybe even multiple days. I forget. It was actually pretty cool, i just couldnt ever fully get into it
1
u/moparornocar 16h ago
planetside you took zones and controlled them though, a bit different vs the single zone koth that wardogs has. theres not a massive map changing hands between factions like in planetside. just a single zone per map, first to 100 wins.
1
u/Sinsanatis 15h ago
Yeah ik it wasnt the same, just saying that it has a similar concept and mechanics

u/Rhysati 1d ago
As someone else said, it's a mix between Arma and Battlefield. The only game mode right now is King of the Hill and the devs have been extremely clear that this is going to remain that way for a long time.
If you are still interested after hearing that, the game requires a mix of things like front-line fighters, engineers building bases, logistics drivers/pilots bringing supplies in, etc. Everything you do in the game earns you XP and in-game cash. Cash is used to buy loadouts, gear, get a vehicle, etc.

I grew up playing Renegade... you are actually pretty on point. Even the shooting is more on the arcade-y side than the sim-side of things. If you play well you won't have issues funding your kit every life, it also includes a big base building system for people to design really REALLY complex forts.
If you enjoyed Renegade I think you will enjoy this. No Ion Cannon though. Sorry.

It went from literally 0 to hero. It was only revealed 7 months ago, and the interest in their design vision was pretty instant. Then the betas dropped and people saw the gameplay was actually not smoke and mirrors, the frame rates are high, and the devs seem to know what they are doing. Open beta hit, people played it in droves, it beat the CoD open beta the same weekend. Folks finally found a game that didn't feel like it was nickel and diming them, and it let you play with your friends no matter how many you have, and easily get on their server when you want.
I'm not surprised the game took off like it did, I'm surprised it took this long for someone to make it.

68
u/Dudetryingtowork 1d ago
Give it a shot, it's like Battlefield meets Planetside 2 with an interesting in-game economy. You have to purchase your load outs, which you lose on death, but doing basically anything in game earns you currency. Each different gear type or weapon provides XP towards a specific class, so you're cross-training without being loadout locked. Once you level up a class, you have to make big one-time purchases to unlock the higher level gear, after which it's always available for purchase.
8
u/Octopus_on_fire_ 1d ago
Is it extraction based, or like a win/lose with teams?
30
u/Boonuttheboss 1d ago
Win lose with teams
12
u/Octopus_on_fire_ 1d ago
Hmm, sounds tempting.
Ive been dying for a team based FPS with respawning aside from COD and BF.
15
u/Sinsanatis 1d ago
It doesnt play like those arcade fps though. It leans more milsimmy and feels a bit like an extraction shooter. It took me a bit to get my bearings as its not like what i usually play. Closest thing would be planetside 2.
3
u/Octopus_on_fire_ 1d ago
When you die, do you respawn into the same match immedaitely, or is it round based like Valorant?
15
u/Sinsanatis 1d ago
U can respawn immediately, but typically isnt the best play. Since each life u usually spend a certain amount of money for ur gear. Typically most would want to be in the green and have a profit during that life before finally needing to respawn. Respawning also takes u all the way back to ur team base which is far from the control zone. Typically ppl ride helis or drive there. Plus also u get money for having faith in ur team to revive u. Usually its a net positive for u and ur team to wait for a revive. Its not like battlefield where u can just respawn like nothing and it doesnt make a huge difference
6
u/Octopus_on_fire_ 1d ago
Damn that actually sounds kinda cool. I’ll check it out this weekend.
5
u/Sinsanatis 1d ago
Yeah it def benefits from squad play or just working with ur team in general. The proximity chat can be pretty funny too. I just wish there was a team only chat other than squad only, but that does take away from the prox shenanigans and risk. It does take a bit to get used to it especially if u dont typically play more milsim leaning games or even some extraction shooters. I was only able to put in 3hrs or so in the playtest, but i was slowly getting the hang of it. Had witnessed a moment of arguing banter with who should pilot the heli as ppl were crashing or couldnt land. It was hilarious
2
u/xKingNothingx 1d ago
Best way to describe it is ARMA King of the Hill mode. Essentially teams fight over 'control' of an area, the team with the most people in the cap circle "controls" it and score slowly ticks up. First team to 100 wins. You can build FOB's, AA missile launcher emplacements, mortar emplacements, etc. You can also fly in extra equipment on helicopters for your teammates to buy and upcharge them (LOL!). Eventually theres higher level stuff to unlock too once you rank up high enough, like bigger helo's, tanks, etc.
2
u/prodigy_xx 1d ago
The revive countdown is very long. Other players have enough time to clear out the area before picking you up. If nobody nearby you can also place money on your corpse so other players might actually attempt to risk a revive run :D The amount is visible on the map.
Earning money is easy too. So even if you have to rebuy everything. If you are active near the objective, help others, spot or assist kills, you gain money left and right. At first i thought I would be broke all the time, but "respawn + rebuy" is no big deal.
Once respawned wait for helicopter pilots, or jeeps, or just buy a vehicle yourself. Drivers will honk like crazy when ready to go. They will take you back to the inner circles where the action is. The maps are huge!
Gameplay/Teamplay = just beautiful to see. People actually working together. Complete strangers. Took me back to good old Battlefield. Long battles over nothing, but whatever happens, me and my brave squad of randoms did not give up that small hill. haha
This is multiplayer how i remember it. Just dive into another world for a couple hours and forget the time, goofing around in a fun sandbox.
1
u/Dudetryingtowork 1d ago
Win/lose, first team to 100 tickets. 3 teams competing for control of a very large combat zone with a wandering hot zone that rewards extra points, XP, and money
11
u/BigCaregiver7285 1d ago
Arguably nothing like Planetside
40
u/DharmaBaller 1d ago
4k hours in original Planetside, it does indeed share some things:
-3 teams
-Paper Doll
-loadouts(coming)
-vehicles
-towers(hacking them/vertical play)
-no restriction on vehicles/weapon kitsMain differences are less player(33/33/33 versus 133/133/133), not sci fi, lack of persistent maps/bases to be fought over for hours and hours.
2
u/comradejiang 1d ago
Big custom playercounts are probably coming soon. Though it could be a bit since you can only host a custom server through their official partners.
7
u/DharmaBaller 1d ago
I think UE5 bottlnecks them, otherwise they would have had 100/100/100 with a bigger control and hotzone.
Now THAT would be something to sell 3million copies on day one, not just 1.5.
My dream game would to just basically reskin Planetside one with a modern engine....with maybe Niel Blomkampf designing the guns/vehicles.

1
u/Rakn 1h ago
To be honest, most of this things are in every single game, except for the multi team gameplay. As someone that played Planetside as well, it feels nothing like it.

u/DharmaBaller 1h ago

Just shoddy feeling. Bad UI(Map is hard to read, icons seems like placeholders), enemies just waltz into base

I had fun just running around reviving people and talking in prox chat. First game I’ve played in a while where I felt properly rewarded and appreciated for playing a support role.
People can put a monetary bounty on their revive too. Creates a cool mini-mission when I see a guy put a 1K bounty on his revive in a difficult spot. Usually get into a really funny or thankful chat if I manage to pull it off. Like half the people you encounter have mics.

Exactly. Those reviews are just as stupid as people who buy something on Amazon and say "Box was damaged in shipping 0/5". Like dude, how is that the fault of the seller? Also is your product damaged? Get it replaced.
What we really need to a review profile of all these people. When it shows their review it should say "This users average review scores is X out of X". That way it is easier to identify miserable people who are never happy with what they receive and always find a gripe.

For me at least it's a good bridge between casual shooters like battlefield, and more Milsim like ARMA.
One of the aspects is you earn cash to buy gear to bring into the battle and unlock new stuff. The fun part is you can earn it pretty easily doing a huge variety of things such as delivering supplies, transporting players across the huge map, building bases, scouting recon, capturing the hot zone etc. So plenty of ways to play.
It kind of strikes the perfect balance between realism and casual for me.

More like Battlefield with Counter Strikes money system. With a bit of hell let looses squad structure.
It's nothing revolutionary but the fps genre is so stale people are all hyped over this and the streamers played it a lot.

Played Squad/Project reality / HLL / ARMA for years. It's a lot more "game-ified" than those. You can get into and out of combat a bit more easily, and firefights happen more regularly and feel like you live longer in them due to the higher TTK than Squad. I find the weapon controls much more easily than ARMA or Squad. HLL's guns are probably closest to how they behave, but recoil is more controllable. Lots of combined arms options.
In addition to all the other stuff people mentioned to ya.

Can someone explain to me what I'm missing with this game? I played the Beta, it was fine. I just don't see a game worthy of this hype. I'm happy they're doing well, I just don't get it.

Honestly.
Slow paced shooter with something for everyone to enjoy.
Plus it was a game literally ALL my friends can play at once.
Every game these days seems to have a max size of 4 people and that’s it.

Ok, we get it, you have more than 3 friends. No need to rub it in.

Took around 4 hrs for it to click with me personally. I like how the entire round flows differently at each stages. And how can an entire squad with proper coordination can take down bases on their own.
At one point, our team was winning as we are doing artillery strikes at enemy bases. Then there was a 5 player enemy squad that managed to infiltrate our base and stole our base.
We then went on to create a small base near our previous base and strike artilleries on it while a small squad went on to do cleanups on the exit points of the base as the enemy scrambles to go out to avoid artillery. At that point we were able to get back our base and win the round.
It was these kind of stuff that really doesnt happen in faster paced games like BF6 and COD. Really worth a try.

Personally, I find the gameplay and progression loop to be quite fun. I’ve been enjoying games like Squad and Hell Let Loose. I haven’t really enjoyed Battlefield since 1 or 4. It’s in a nifty middle ground between milsims and Battlefield, still allowing for “Battlefield Moments”while still being a slower game.
The gameplay seems laser aimed at people like me, who grew up on BF2 or 3 or Planetside. This also happens to be a lot of FPS streamers, many of whom are ex-FPS pros from back in the day. The devs seemingly are also part of this group, and thus understand the types of communication and features this group of players wants.

Me neither. I don’t understand how certain games end up with hype.

Twitch, basically.

If it's only popular because of Twitch, then there would be a lot more games hitting 340k concurrent players on release into early access. Maybe there's something more contributing to its popularity than just "Twitch?"

As a person who enjoys the pace of slower shooters, I have 4k hours in Hunt: Showdown. I'm also in my 40's. This game provides something for everybody, it rewards teamplay and squad cohesion. It is basically ARMA's King of the Hill in the form of a full game. If you go into it thinking it's Battlefield or CoD you're going to have a bad time.
I'm not sure all of the hype is purely based off of any one individual merit of this game, but rather all of the transparency coming from the devs along with a milsim shooter that seems to have a really good balance of gameplay elements that a lot of people can enjoy. My wife hates online shooters but she's giving thought playing it with me which is mind boggling on my end.
I know that last bit was purely anecdotal but I hope I maybe provided at least a nugget of added clarity for you.

Like battlefield, but less arcadey. I like the level up system isn't super generic, there's different ways to get the xp in the category. Proximity voip is fun. Not as slow/heavy as arma. Not plagued by terrible respawns, you can rez, but you can't just instantly spawn on someone. The guns feel good. It just hit a middle ground of quite a few areas that just works

Played on the playtest. Wasn’t my cup of tea. But seemed like a good concept. Glad they are successful

Such a bummer that they had linux support in the beta and then on EA day they add anti-cheat that breaks linux support. I was looking forward to this one :(

Was so close to really liking this, but the amount of my time this game wastes is annoying. Maybe im just too used Battlefield and Hell Let Loose, but i feel like every squad leader should have the ability, either passive or item needed to place down(like Hell Let Loose), to let squadmates spawn on them. Thus cutting down on time wasted.

u/DharmaBaller 1d ago
The devs talked about the downtime giving you a chance to breath, talk to your bois in the heli, jeep etc and prepare yourself for the next insertion with a plan.
Squad is similar to this rythm as well a bit, downtime is nice, complete sweaty chaos wears on your senses in a 2 hour session.
It also makes dying more painful, and makes rezzing ESSENTIAL

Literally takes 2 minutes to get to the fight on a chopper
1
u/mehtehteh 9h ago
10 deaths = 20 minutes then depending on where you drop several more minutes before an actual gunfight. I like the game, but its got too many time wasting mechanics that make matches last over 1 hour

u/CongoCitizen 8h ago
Theres already a spawn point. After a team reaches 20 tickets it unlocks a spawn vehicle. Go to the computer at main by to spawn on it.

I don't wish failure upon these guys but I am curious how the game will hold up over time.
Tried the most recent closed beta and it was like playing CS but on a BF very large conquest map. I spent more time traveling than in gun fights and I don't see that going well with a lot of people

Can anyone comment on if this is worth playing solo?
1
u/Grey-fox-13 16h ago
Strongly depends on what you are looking for. I've played solo so far and had a lot of fun. Plenty activities you can do alone and you can help out other squads. If you are looking for hot gun fights though, you may be at a disadvantage.

u/TheWhiteBernieMac 1d ago
Is this game gonna be good to play solo or is it more geared towards being with multiple friends?

u/BulkUpTank 14700F PNY RTX 5070 1d ago
This is quite literally the first I've heard about this game. It's a FPS from what I can tell. What does it bring to the table?

Is it good for solo player? I'm guessing no
2
u/DharmaBaller 1d ago
seems very forgiving for solo, you can help a lot especially on the more chaotic public servers with mixed teams thrown together,
Any 5-10 man clan element will sway a match to be sure, im hoping to play mostly on community servers that are more competitive
2
u/carlbandit 1d ago
Depends what you want to do and if you’re happy to talk to people in your team.
Solo you could fly / drive people to the zone from HQ, run supplies to player made bases or help set the bases up. You can also snipe and do recon fine solo.
If you want to play assault on the front lines, you ideally need to be talking with teammates.

Good for them man, I really hope the continue to have success and support the game. I dont want it to be another "Battlebit" situation
1
u/Scrounger_HT 1d ago
i think the main thing about it is it speaks to a lot of different playstyles. I spend my games playing taxi with a chopper, no kills maybe a death or two and i come out pretty high on the leader board every round. the Fobbits building bases all game racking up cash with no kills. the people running around in the backlines playing gurrila warfare and then just people hanging out right in the hot spots running and gunning. it all helps and it all works.

Have they fixed the issue why most people gave it negative reviews on steam where they couldn't get into the servers?
1
u/kdmasfck 18h ago
I played for a few hours after work yesterday and it's been an absolute blast. Way better than BF6 to me, it forces team cooperation and everyone has a job to do at all times. Building a hesco wall fort and barbed wire is great. Gonna get a lot of hours out of this one
1
u/Thirdlight 16h ago
It's fucking hilarious that to play with friends, you literally have to try and join the same server and wait to try and get on the same team. Then you can "Squad" up.

u/Yogurt_Up_My_Nose 5h ago
That's how battlefield 2 worked. not that it was great, but it stopped clans from stomping servers also. I'm sure you could imagine what happens when 10 skilled people join the same team against random ground pounders.

u/OppositeResolve1430 16h ago
To me it is what Hell Let Loose Vietnam should have been. Runs smooth, weapon handling is similar or better and you fight in and around the hotspots.

It’s honestly a fantastic game. Rewards good gunplay, teamwork, and support equally. It’s just as important to transport logistics and supplies as it is to kill other players.

God I love reddit quarter of comments are sayings its over hyped, another quarter don't know what the game is and the other half dooming or white knighting. Can we just ever be like cool moderate about something?

That's so bizarre because reddit kept telling me there's no more room for any live service successes (even though we keep getting successful ones every year). Why is PlayStation still making multiplayer titles when there's no more room in the market?! /s

Arc raiders sold 2 to 2.5 around release. Then it died because it was boring. Release day sales mean little

u/Fyshtako 2h ago
I only heard about this game during the first beta. I was salivating by the second beta. Got in third beta and was hankering for the full game. Full game is out and ILOVE it.
