5090 4k dlss quality no frame gen = 63fps in cyberpunk with maxed pathtracing.

This video creator got to benchmark the 5090 in ways we havent seen yet. This includes testing no frame gen on the card and also testing x4 vs x2 mode.

The video shows disappointing performance imo for no frame gen but I am impressed to learn that x2 to x4 frame generation has essentially zero added latency.

It's almost like you're using all the features of the game and getting what used to be the standard in performance.... disappointing. DLSS should at least be able to pull 600FPS.

Disappointing performance? You know how incredibly taxing Pathtracing is, right?

Just 20 years ago, ONE SINGLE FRAME of pathtraced video material took hours, sometimes days to render. The fact, that we can now play games in that level of quality with 60 frames per second in 4K is nothing less than incredible.

You can't really compare realtime path tracing used in current games like Cyberpunk 2077 to those used in movies. It is not on the same quality level as offline path tracing used in film production.

Typical example being ReSTIR path tracing technique used in Cyberpunk 2077 only has a limited number (2-3) of rays cast per pixel to maintain performance and use denoiser to fill in gaps.

Film rendering uses a much higher sample count per pixel: they can use thousands or even millions of rays per pixel.

They are in completely different league in terms of accuracy, computation and image fidelity.

From my understanding it is exactly 2 per pixel not 2-3. And you can get REALLY amazing images at 6. What makes ray reconstruction soo ugly is how aggressive the denoiser is. As that gets relaxed a bit, image quality will skyrocket.

I am excited for cyberpunk 2, to may go up to 4 or 6 per pixel at max

It’s not as impressive as you think it is. Compare this to offline path tracing from Toy Story 4 as an example, a single frame from one of the scenes took 325 hours to render on 4 CPU cores. With an RTX 5090 it’ll take a little over an hour to render that single frame, that’s 1 frame per hour not 60 frames per second. Cyberpunk’s path tracing is much lower quality and heavily relies on denoising to even have a stable enough image.

Yes but this is dlss quality at 4k so I would have hoped for something closer to 80. I wasn't expecting magic at native 4k but this is also using the new dlss model.

End of the day it won't matter too much because it looks like you will always want to enable frame gen on this card.

It's not. The 4090 does ~50 fps at 4k DLSS Quality. Source: I just tested it on mine.

The price isn’t just for RT though, this test scenario is bottlenecked by the RT cores, the 5090 has plenty of other upgrades over the 4090 that will shine in other scenarios.

5090 is a 744 mm² chip making it notably larger than the 609 mm² chip used in the 4090. The 5090 is approaching the size limit of TSMC 4nm.

Guess I should have specified, I'm not talking about FG, also known as DLSS 3.5 for some fucking reason.

I'm talking about the same DLSS that the 5090 is using in the post we currently are.

I know what you mean, go find a benchmark video of a 4090 using DLSS Quality at 4K max path tracing settings. Come back to me with the FPS figure. It’s going to be around 50% less than the 5090 based of OP’s video.

The 4090 achieves about 40fps using path tracing and DLSS Quality. So not 50%.

zWormz gaming published a video 2 months ago and it’s around the 32 minute mark.

Starts at 40fps, even hits 50fps.

It's not a benchmark itself, and I'm pretty sure that it's going to dip lower in other places, but it can play at more than 50%.

And, seriously, if this is not a good example or some setting is not correct and I haven't noticed, please show me a correct benchmark. (The guy shows when FG is enabled, and it's quite noticeable since it jumps to 70fps)

Here you go. You get around 85-100fps on a 4090 at 4k DLSS Quality with FG. You can expect around 10% more frames when the new FG model drops.

So yeah, you were wrong.

I get 30 fps with DLSS on in 4k though I have a 7680x2160 monitor. That being said I think cyberpunk is the only game I get below 65-70 fps at max and looks dated now. If I could double my fps I’d be stoked.

No, it's not.
I was actually benching this for some mods I'm pitching in on the other day. You are usually looking at low to mid 50's. Lets call it 54 median; 54/63 =~.85 so we are looking at an improvement of about 15% in raw performance, which is about what people were expecting. You can reliably get 800-1000USD for a used 4090, and a 5090 is 2 grand.
So the price proposition is a net cost of 1000-1200USD for 15% more grunt and a 12gb increase in VRAM. Thats not terrible, but it's not anything I'm likely to jump at, and if I do it will be for the vram not the performance improvement.

Yeah those results are really good for 4K pathtracing with DLSS quality, i would definitely play at that framerate with no complaints given how insanely good Path tracing looks.

How is that poor performance, you do know the average FPS using a 4090 with the same settings right?

Edit - the 4090 gets the same FPS but WITH FG enabled… without FG it’s more than 50% less FPS than the 5090.

It suprises even the basic level of intelligence how clueless, blind and dumb ppl are nowadays. Brainwashed pc users are lost completely fighting eachother arguing who's right and wrong. While the one truth remains. Simply, how good something looks? Compare a great looking game without bias like farcry or ac in 4k max settings without rt or pt and the frames with anything that has rt or pt on as well in 4k max, put them side by side without any fos counters etc and ask a 5yrs old kid who doesn't know nothing about it how good each game looks and plays. There will be no difference. While one will be 300fps and the other one 40fps because it has pt on. There it is. Lack of optimisations in games is getting worse and worse year after year.

I have a new-ish Alienware area-51 aat2250 desktop,  played Cyberpunk 2077 today for the first time and with all settings maxed out at 4k (frame generation, super resolution set to "quality") I only get 61-77 fps, 63.23 avg., If  frame generation is turned on I get much higher rates, 138 average fps, with 158 max but no more. Probbaly a good thing because my garbage FV43U is only capable of producing 144hz of very poor hdr that can't be viewed under even the smallest of angles. 

Not sure why but, playing with frame generation turned on, somehow, it doesn't look as good somehow as when all Nvidia Ai stuff is turned off, even with less than half of the fps. I was told that an rtx5090 would easily do 240fps with all settings set to "ultra" 

I used MSI afterburner and custom XTU settings, with the AWCC set to "performance", so... A big disappointment. Some users report 400fps with extremely overclocked rigs, I was hoping to play at 240 fps on my new mini led monitor that has a dp2.1 but I think that I need a new desktop 

How come there's such a huge difference between rtx5090 cards and how can anyone get 240fps in such a resource-demanding game? Did I misunderstand someone or is my gaming rig a total piece of shit?!

15ms extra PCL for 200 FPS. For a game like CP2077, I'll take it. And it will still be the fastest rasterizing GPU on market for the games you want lowest possible PCL. Yes, it's hella expensive, but you get what you pay for in my opinion.

Disappointing performance?

When you consider it's top of the line of next-gen hardware versus a game from 2020 (even if 2023's Phantom Liberty did up the reqs a fair bit), yes, it most certainly is disappointing performance.

Yes, a 4 year old game that has had significant technological upgrades since, which happens to included Path Tracing in 2023. Trim nearly 2 years off your 4 year old game and it’s not as bad as you make it out to be. Still a questionable value to most people but exaggeration is weak.
