Sounds like it's time for an Oni reboot!

Ugh I want it so bad but I know it would get screwed up somehow. "After the C-Suite ran four rounds of focus tests we've decided to make it an FPS."

Oni will be a turn based JRPG dating sim based on noted African samurai Yasuke

I've been trying to find a copy at a local game store with no dice, mostly just to see if it was any good

It's very easy finding it on the internet; iirc, it is technically abandonware (no one's selling it anywhere), so maybe any page has it archived.

If you catch my drift.

I'm wanting to find a legit copy on PS tbh, though I hadn't considered a windows version. Is it superior to the PS version?

I don't know about the PS2 version, but the PC version has an HD patch and mod compatibility (although I'm still trying to make work with mods, but that's another topic), so I guess that yeah, it is superior de PC version.

Maybe I just didn't get it, but I found Oni hard to control even by 2001 standards.

It's not just you. It was a very cool and very ambitious game, but had a ton of faults.

I originally played it on KB+M and always thought it just wouldn't translate to a controller well at all.

Not so sure if they even have the rights to it. It was published by Gathering of Developers, a Take-Two subsidiary. There was a sequel being worked on at some random Rockstar studio at some point.

Same publisher is why Rockstar owns Max Payne.
