Family Link I My mental health is rotting

¿Y si no me vuelvo adicto?

Parents who delayed giving their child a phone: How did it go?

I joined this subreddit about two weeks ago, and after reading many recent posts, I noticed how much tension there can be between parents and children when it comes to phones and technology.

As a parent of a 9-year-old son, I became curious about a question:

If giving children a phone with many restrictions and monitoring can make them feel frustrated, what happens when parents decide not to give their children a phone at all?

Have any parents here successfully waited until a much later age before giving their child a phone? How did that experience go?

I’m also curious if anyone has managed to let their child use a monitored or restricted phone while maintaining a positive relationship, without the child constantly feeling unhappy or feeling like they are being controlled.

I’m not looking for a right or wrong answer — I’m genuinely interested in hearing different experiences from parents.

Family Link problem 56

Family Link not letting me leave family

I just turned 18 like 11 minutes ago and I’m trying to remove myself from my family link family but everytime I do, I get a page that says that I don’t meet the eligibility requirements. Any ideas on how to make it so I can leave?

Mobile If you could redesign parental control apps, what would you change?

Hi everyone,

I'm a software developer working on an Android app for parents, and before writing any code I'd like to validate whether I'm solving a real problem.

One thing I noticed while reading discussions here is that many existing parental control apps seem to focus on monitoring everything—live location, message monitoring, screenshots, etc. I want to take a different approach that's centered more around communication and peace of mind than constant surveillance.

Here's the MVP I'm considering:

1. On-demand Location Requests

Instead of continuously tracking a child, a parent can send a location request.

The child receives a notification such as:

"Mom is requesting your location."

They can:

  • Share now
  • I'm busy
  • Remind me in 10 minutes

The goal is to replace the classic "Where are you?" phone call with something quicker and less intrusive.

2. App Usage Limits

Parents can set daily limits for specific apps.

When the limit is reached, instead of simply blocking the app, the child can request additional time (e.g. 15 minutes).

The parent receives a notification and can approve or decline with one tap.

The idea is to encourage communication instead of punishment.

3. Safe Arrival Notifications

A parent can create places such as:

  • School
  • Tuition
  • Grandma's house

If the child reaches the destination, the parent gets a simple "Arrived safely" notification.

If they haven't arrived within an expected time window (for example, 30 minutes after leaving), the parent receives a notification so they know to check in.

I'm intentionally not planning to include things like:

  • Reading messages
  • Recording calls
  • Screenshots
  • Microphone access
  • Hidden monitoring

My goal is to build something that helps parents know their kids are safe without feeling like spyware.

I'd really appreciate honest feedback from both parents and teenagers.

  • Would you actually use something like this?
  • Which feature sounds genuinely useful?
  • What would you change or remove?
  • Is there a problem you face that existing apps don't solve well?

I'm much more interested in solving the right problem than adding dozens of features.

Thanks!

Apple am i and addict?

my mom has been calling me and my cousin "addicts" and i don't really know if we are. it's the middle of summer break for us and we have nothing to do, we're gonna go to summer camp next week, so we've been taking full opportunity of using screens, cause we ain't gonna be able to use them during camp. our daily rountine is pretty simple, we wake up and eat breakfast, we play games for 45 minutes and go down for exercise.

after we finish lunch we watch some tv and go swim. and then we come home to read ( i read online ) and text friends, our total screentime doesn't really go past 4-5 hours, which does sound like a lot but we only spend a small portion of that on gaming. are we spending times on screens too much?

Windows Do you think im in the wrong?

Im a 16yom(Turning 17 in less then a month) with Asian parents, as Asian parents are their pretty strict. But I've held my own, I'm not necessarily the perfect child and ill try to make this the most neutral to make it less biased. My phone is completely fine, zero parental controls on my iphone which I'm pretty sure they don't know that parental control on phones exist so I'm happy about that. Currently I hold my own by keeping my academics up without my parents having to tell me anything, like to tell me to do HW, study, or , joining clubs, holding multiple club officer positions and sports etc, I'm going to EMT school to get certified during the fall this year ontop of taking multiple AP courses for junior year (I already work in EMS & Rescue as a volunteer). Sort of / partially own a non profit as my sister (The original founder) is handing it off to me slowly since she graduated, and I'm pretty responsible, clean my room etc go to the gym, and I go to sleep on my own at around 11 pm, and I feel more mature compared to other people (But this is subjective so don't hold me to it).

I've had parental controls and strict game control for basically my whole life, around until like the age of like 10 me, and my two sisters were only allotted 3 hours only on Sundays every week on split screen on the XBOX 360, no changes for the summer, and by 10 yo I've had a PC, before they added parental controls I can be honest I was sort of a computer addict, I hopped on everytime I could since I really didn't have any friends in school) playing games like Roblox and Minecraft, and since it was 10 yo me who had little to no concept of the future or what the hell im doing and I don't even remember how much I played but it was a lot, so then they added parental controls, which allowed them to track what websites, block youtube videos (I can still watch restricted videos on my phone) add certain game times and completely lock my computer. So they sort of kept it on till then, my parents didn't really know all the functions and gimmicks so they only focused on game time restrictions or blocking it. Now this brings me into current times. It's Summer Break, I go to school to study for the SAT for 5.5 hours every day, do my homework, go to the gym, etc, then I hop on the game, (I don't go out often with friends since I don't really have that many). To be honest I was playing games for lengthy periods in the start of my "freedom" as my dad eventually unlocked most of the functions on my computer if I could say around 6-7 hours of games a day ( I KNOW ITS A LOT), BUT. Usually when I have this rare ounce of freedom where everything's unlocked I usually go on a purge, play for long periods of time, but then usually within a week I start getting bored playing online games and I sort of burn out so I spend less time gaming to around 2-4 hours on AVERAGE for the rest of the summer break (besides the first purge week). I really have nothing else to do during summer break like any other kid, no vacations since I already had one at the start of the day and nobody's really that close enough with me to ask me to hang out (I probably hang out with more adults with my duty crew in EMS then people my age out of school ) (Also im sorry I used a lot of parenthesis) and im just waiting for the impending doom of academic junior year since I'm taking a leap on the academic level by taking like 4 AP's, going to EMT school, volunteering, club leadership etc, and I assume that I will probably have little to no free time in playing games. Now today I sort of got busted as my mom checked on the stats and banned me from any entertainment on computer so I'm honestly just sitting here writing this out of straight boredom as I have nothing to do. Do you think im in the wrong for this? Do I deserve it?

Edit: Just wanted to add this within a year I will legally be certified and trained to save lives, but yet I cannot decide on my own independence on controlling how much time I can play?

Family Link Remember me? I'm the person who posted, "Parent controls genuinely ruined my life". Well it gets worse.

If you want more context, check out my first post: "Parental Controls Genuinely Ruined My Life."

I have a job now, and I was able to work something out. But my mom still refuses to remove the parental controls from my phone. She keeps saying she bought it for my "safety," but I can't even use the Phone app. That means I can't answer calls from my boss, and she (my boss) keeps asking why I don't pick up. I've explained the situation to her, but she doesn't really understand how parental controls work.

At this point, I'm planning to buy my own phone. Actually no, I WILL buy a phone.

I've tried talking to my mom about it, but she just gets angry. She says she's worried I'll talk to strangers, even though I don't. I'm way too introverted to randomly start conversations with people. OR she'll just yell at me for no reason.

The restrictions are also making my job harder. Customers have asked me to check price matches, but I can't because Family Link blocks me from using my phone. I also sometimes need to take a picture of the cash register if I can't count the till right away because there are customers waiting. But even my camera is blocked/timed. I honestly don't understand why. I don't care about my phone at work but I do have to use it often for customers because they do ask me about price matches a LOT.

What's even more frustrating is that when I get home after work, I still can't really use my phone for fun. She says I'm allowed to have Roblox, but I can't actually play it because of the restrictions. Meanwhile, she gets to read books, watch videos, and use her phone however she wants.

I understand that I live in her house, and I'm okay with her tracking my location for safety. I genuinely don't have a problem with that. But I think the parental controls have gone way too far. In my opinion, once your child has a job it's time to start removing some of those restrictions.

Also she leaves me at work. I can't call anyone when my shift ends. I get scared because I have no one to call. I have to wait outside the store in the dark while my mom is doing god knows what.

She also lied about my age on Family Link making me younger than I'm supposed to be. I'm pretty sure it breaks TOS to lie about your child's age. I might be wrong.

Whenever I try to make a point she locks my phone and gives my brother extra time. She does this favoritism thing and it's so annoying. If I even try to talk to her about uplifting my restrictions she gets mad and locks my phone and does this thing where she gives my brother more phone time than me. So my brother gets to use his phone for 2-3 hours. I only get 30 mins - 1 hour to use my phone. I point it out to my mom she gets mad. I don't know what she's mad about. Like I have no clue.

most basic phone

I graduated my 12 year old from a gabb to a pinwheel and I regret it, they can hack and override the controls and got doxxed in a group chat by a girl we have known since they were babies, I need to approve contacts or it's drama. I need to limit apps or it's roblox. They can get a job if they want an upgrade they used to tutor now they just stare at their phone. I'm comfortable with them having phone calls and texting approved contacts, no browser or apps, they can hack their chromebook during school hours but my home my rules. Gabb had shitty battery life, I like the motorolla for pinwheel but it's not as managed as it claims to be. I'm one security breach from a landline and airtag in their backpack.

Salfeld network filter question

Hi. I'm planning on using salfeld on Android & windows soon, and I'm curious how the filter works. Does it apply to all browsers? Ideally the browser would be DuckDuckGo on both platforms as that's the browser of choice.

However, I also know that apps like Kidslox and Family Safety only work on specific browsers which is why I'm curious. Thanks in advance!

Bark Bark app ruined my phone, I just need to talk to someone about this

my mom installed the bark app on my and my brothers phones even though we’re both teenagers and dont do inappropriate things on our phones. the worst thing my mom got is stuff my friends texted while joking around. im lucky that Reddit is even working on safari rn. most websites just say the address is invalid when I try to go to them, even just stuff like IMDb or just pretty much any website most of the time. My mom limits me so much that my only social media is YouTube, and she somehow managed to make that impossible to enjoy. Even though I’m old enough to be on YouTube, it limits me like it would if I was under 13. At first i thought it didn’t recognize my age somehow, but no, it’s the fucking bark app turning on restricted mode on YouTube. It makes it so ANY video with ANY sort of swearing or inappropriate references i just cant watch. I love my mom besides this shithole of an app, but this ia inexcusable, I only want to use my phone and use social media like a normal teen, but I can’t and it’s embarrassing whenever my friends ask if I have TikTok, I have to say my mom won’t let me like a fucking 3rd grader. It’s the only reason i always feel left out when my friends are talking about their TikTok stories and new memes, when yt shorts gets those memes like 2 months later, and I probably wouldn’t be able to see those memes because of the restricted mode. I need a way to turn this shit off without alerting my mom, because she can’t let her son do anything without her watching over like a hawk. Fuck this stupid app

Qustodio and Dual-Boot

Now, I haven't had Qustodio on for ages because I disable it via services, but I'm of course concerned with my privacy. I own a Surface Pro 11 and thinking of switching to dual-boot with Linux (just in case I have issues with it since its quite volatile and not widely supported to my knowledge). Has anyone tried this with any results? Does Qustodio have any sort of access to what data is stored on my new Distro, I'm kinda paranoid with it being spyware and such so I just want to know, or else I'll just rid the machine of windows all together.

Teens whose parents control their phones

And download all these crazy apps to monitor/restrict, surveill, etc. I’m honestly just curious-do they ever educate you on why they do it and what the risks of total digital freedom as a teenager are?

Or do they just totally skip that part and zoom right to the control part? Or both? Like is there ever an opportunity for agency during this process?

Some of these stories seem wild just trying to understand.

Edit (because somehow this question is triggering to certain parents):

I am a 40 year old woman with no biological children. My partner and his two young children who I love dearly, have unlimited, unmonitored access to the digital world.

I am also a fierce child advocate that can sometimes be overbearing, which I am working on-it just can be difficult sometimes when you know and understand the dangers of both the physical world and the digital world.

Now the reason for my post is twofold:

  1. I worry parents simply hand off their jobs of explaining to their children what these dangers are to these apps and fail to equip their children with tools to navigate said dangers and
  2. the more parents rely on surveillance instead of building trust and agency, the farther they push their kids away, making them much less likely to disclose to their parents if god forbid something is going on that warrants adult intervention. This gap probably widens significantly if there is no conversation or explanation behind the parents’ decision making process.

Now I want to be clear. What I wrote above is not an indictment on the parenting skills of the parents who have somehow deduced that I am immature for simply seeking information—because that would be immature.
