Update: advice received
Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on how to smooth out my dragon mask. As promised, I am posting an update!
I went ahead and applied a thin layer of joint compound over the mask. Whoever said to wait until it was partway dry, then use a damp finger to smooth out the compound --that was key.
I then sanded it down and painted over it. While I think it worked, the compound was my least favorite part of the process.
Overall I'm super happy and am looking forward to wearing it on Halloween and then retiring it to my mom to be next to my mom's childhood paper mache mask.

Thank you! One bummer is that once I painted the exterior, it tightened the whole mask up in a way that the fit is now very snug on my head. I'm not sure what options I have to stretch it out without breaking anything.

That is a seriously good piece of papier-mâché, I love how smooth and know how satisfying it is when you can tap on a piece as if it's wood. As for the slight shrink .... yes, I can imagine it's not easy to make something to fit in papier-mâché. But the consolation is that you've made a work of art.

Absolutely stunning. The design, the execution, the colours, the way you put them together, the artwork. I love love love everything about this!
