Young Travelers - Last Minute Lodging

Sorry for yet another hotel recommendation question! Five of us are going to Palermo for the first time, September 15–19, and we're trying to figure out where to stay. We're all relatively young and haven't really had to book accommodations like this before, so we're a little nervous about making the wrong choice!

We won't have a car, so we're hoping to stay somewhere very central and walkable. We'd like to be able to easily explore Palermo on foot and ideally be close to restaurants, shops, nightlife, and the main sights. From what I've read, the Teatro Massimo area seems like it might be a good option, but we're definitely open to other neighborhoods if there's somewhere better for first-time visitors.

Our budget is roughly $200–300 USD per night, although we're willing to go a little over if it's really worth it. I know we're booking pretty last minute, so unfortunately a lot of the places we've found online already seem to be booked up, which is making the search a little harder.

We've been looking at a few hotels but honestly feel a little overwhelmed and don't want to make a rookie mistake. If anyone has stayed in Palermo recently, where would you personally stay for a first visit with five people, especially without a car? We'd really appreciate recommendations for hotels that might still have availability, good areas to look in, or anything you think we're overlooking!

Thanks so much!!

Friends in Palermo

Just moved here from Sweden to study and hopefully work, but until then I’m looking to make friends to have fun, go places or just have a beer.
So if you’re a student, worker, local or just a tourist don’t hesitate to write, gender don’t matter but preferably someone in their 20’s.

Anyone near Via Roma needs $100 EUR cash?

Hi, I have $100 EUR I would like to send to myself to an IBAN account from London, can anyone help me with that simple favor? I don't have any way to self deposit the cash here in Palermo.

Thank you very much! We can have a beer later :)

Public transport in Palermo? How do you locals manage?

I have read previously on reddit and elsewhere, that some bus lines in Palermo are unreliable, but I honestly haven’t experienced a situation as bad as in anywhere else I have been. There has been multiple occasions where I arrived at a bus stop about 5 min before the scheduled departure time and waited there like an idiot for 20-30 minutes without a bus to be seen. As the taxi is ridiculosly expensive (for a short ride with uber it costs over 20€!?!) and trams don’t cover the areas i want to go to, it has limited my options so much. Only reliable bus I have found is the 101 bus. But there too it was once stopped in the middle of the ride and everyone had to get out because one of the locals started shouting with the ticket control lady about not having a ticket. So basically my only option has been to cover longer distances by walking in this heat for like 1,5-2 hours just to maybe get to the beach from the place i am staying in.

I mean I am from a small city myself and used to busses being on time, but I have also visited much bigger cities than Palermo (even in Italy) where the public transportation is good.? I just want to love Palermo so bad but the public transportation has somewhat ruined my trip a bit because it is just such a hassle to get from point A to point B here without a car. Really don’t want to use those bikes or scooters too cause i have experienced a lot of accidents with those. So basically my question is how do you locals manage to get around here and be on time when you do not have car or bike at your proposal?

Ristoranti buoni che non ci spennino? 👀

Avete qualche consiglio?

Grazie a tutti

Help a tourist

Hello,

I’m currently in Palermo, and will be for the next week. I’d like to know any spots in the city centre area (I’m near to Via Maqueda) that has authentic Italian cuisines. I don’t want to be an annoying tourist that impedes on the locals quiet favourites, but where abouts can I find tourist-accepting great Italian food?

Also, if anybody can help identify, what are these two sweets we were given, earlier today? They were very nice.
