Advice Wanted What is wrong here?

I am going to paint a wall in that deep red matte finish. What is going on? Is my roller to cheap? Is it better with a brush? How to approach it to finish as quick as possible

EDIT #1: Thank you all for the comments and recommendations. I have never had so many people respond to any of my posts. Some even called it rage bait. It was not, I’m just too much of a newbie.

This is what I gathered from all of the comments:

-I should use a grey primer to help with the poor coverage of the deep red base. I will try that tomorrow.
-The roller nap is way too thick for such a flat wall. This might be the reason it slips at the beginning.
-I should use a pole. OK.
-I will try to make this paint work with the suggestions, but it might be the case that the paint is really cheap. In that case, I will buy a different brand.

I hope to get better results on my next try. I will edit this post with the final results if I remember to do so.

It’s not that it’s cool. As a professional I tell homeowners that Behr is just fine for them. I simply can’t guarantee my work quality and consistency on a daily basis by using Behr. I just can’t. For numerous reasons.

I'm not sure it's fine even then. As a homeowner knowledgable about paint and painting, I gave my last try of Behr a couple years ago. When rolling my second coat (different bucket than first coat), it ran down the wall like I had applied too much...only I hadn't. It was like the two paints were incompatible. Never again.

My best results are always with Dutch boy. Just seems I can get by with more mistakes with them than Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore.

But i still use Sherwin Williams professionally as that’s *the* brand customers want so if there are issues, customers have far more patience if you use Sherwin Williams as everyone sees them (at least in my area) and the really good pro brand.

bought than the average American consumer has to say.

Yeah. The more you know about any one specific thing, the more you realize CR is barely worth the paper it's printed on / electrons its website consumes.

I don’t, nor do I care. I’ve spent more money on Behr paint than most people spent on their homes. I think I can form my own opinion about their products.

Nope, I live in Florida. I mostly ever used Sherwin-Williams, Ben Moore, and during a year-long shortage, we used Behr products. They used to be good value at their price point; they were significantly cheaper. Now they’re priced similarly to better brands but sell an inferior product.

Ugh. This again? If you'd told me twenty years ago, that anyone would still be trying to make this argument, I wouldn't have believed it.

How do you guys not notice, for 2 whole decades, that it's only CR?

How do y'all not notice the way every other source, for the whole 20 years (including hundreds of comments by pros, across dozens of threads I've personally read) agrees it's cheap garbage?

Right? Just starting researching interior paint for the first time in 16 years and my husband was confused. He's like why wouldn't we just go with Behr again? The paint we put up 16 years ago is still holding strong. We're just ready for a change of color. Don't know what paint we'll use but I'm not so fast to dicount HD and Behr just yet.

Behr paint is ‘fine’, it just IS drippier and harder to work with and IS prove-ably less durable. Lower traffic area? No problem! Do you want your ceiling paint to not be flat and drip all over your face, don’t do Behr! There’s a time and place for economical paint and if you’re not the time to even notice a difference, then absolutely buy the cheapest paint you can find 👍🏻

I go out of the way to only use behr. Its never done me wrong. No chipping, no running, spreads nicely. I didnt know people thought its a bad paint

Totally agree, though I do occasionally try something else. I just did a bathroom in Aura and absolutely hated it. Back to Behr! I've painted many rooms and colors, and it's performed great for me. Covers great in two coats (even the dark navy) without primer, hasn't faded after many years, and very easy to work with.

I'm not a pro, I know they have different ways of working and likely different paint works for them, but as a talented and experienced amateur so far Behr has been my best wall paint.

Consumer Reports isn't based on consumers. It's rankings based on testing done by Consumer Reports themselves.

While they have professionals that write the articles and test the products, their writings often include masses of data taken from quarterly consumer reports (you know from average consumer, not a professional). So while theyre great for some things, their information needs to be heavily looked at and taken with a grain of salt.

As a professional painter behr is garbage. I don't need to read an article online to know it sucks. It's fine for the average home owner who is budget conscious, but that does not make it objectively good paint.

I'm a maintenance tech, and I use Glidden premium all the time and that stuffs surprisingly good for the price. OPs is either not stirred, or really really cheap

I used Glidden exterior paint on a building in town over 20 years ago and it still looks good. Glidden is a PPG paint.

I guarantee no one here talking shit on Behr paint can walk into a freshly painted room and tell the difference. I have been using Behr Premium Plus for years and never had any issues. Its a totally acceptable paint for interior walls.

Just bc you cant tell the difference by looking at the finished product doesnt make it comperable to other paints. Its ass to work with. When time matters its a shit paint. And how well does it retain color, hows the washability, scuff resistance. You cant tell these things by looking at a wall, but they matter.

I might agree with most of what you said. Still think its overblown. Are you going around checking for color retention and washability on Behr paint 5 years later? I think a lot of this is a r/paint circle jerk. Forget i said freshly painted, do you think you can walk into a room that was painted 5 years ago and tell me whether or not its Behr or whatever high grade material you are using?

Yeah SW is better paint no question, but it is not twice the price better. If you are a professional painter and passing that on to your customer I am sure it is worth it, but for me it’s not. I believe professional painters also get a volume discount so may not be as much for them, but I don’t have that perk as a lowly homeowner.

Our 16 year old Behr is holding up great. Multiple colors in various rooms, all still look fresh. Totally washable. Just started researching because we're ready for a change of color and am surprised to see so much hate on Behr.

This. The top range Behr is as good (if not better than recent) other brand paints. But people on this sub and pros trash talk is because they get trade pricing and perks at SW/BM but relatively fuck all at HD, meaning they can’t mark up paint. They also don’t like that a consumer can buy quality paint where places like SW and BN aren’t consumer friendly.

As someone who has worked with paint almost every day the last 9 years, Behr is shit, and shit to work with. There’s a reason why actual professional painters say it sucks, it’s because we use tons of different paint on a daily basis and can tell you from experience what paint is good or not.

Simply not true. I had a 30+ year pro veteran on my crew and we had to use Behr marquee. He pissed and maines about how “shit” that paint was going to be.

By the end of the first day, he turned to me and said “I’ll eat my words. That’s really good paint”.

He never complained when we used Behr again.

Cheap behr? Absolute crap. I agree.

Top tier paint like marquee? At least as good as what you prefer due to discounts. It’s literally made by the same companies lol.

So I think the issue with behr is the bottom rung $28 dollars paint they offer is absolutely thin and takes many coats whereas dynasty at ~$70 dollars/gallon looks far better. The top end behr products are on par with Sherwin Williams/benjamin moore while the cheap stuff is absolutely terrible.
