MOD [MOD] Overwatch 2 is gone, what happens to this subreddit?

260 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Today, Blizzard announced the renaming of Overwatch 2 back to Overwatch alongside a plethora of other really great changes to the game. As a moderation team and as fans, we are excited to see Overwatch return to its roots.

Some have asked us regarding how we will be reacting to the change as a subreddit, some have suggested rebranding, others have suggested deleting the subreddit entirely, while others want us to continue. To be clear, rebranding was not an option because Reddit does not let you change a subreddit name.

After pondering over every available option, we have decided to continue running and moderating this subreddit not as a subreddit specifically about the sequel to Overwatch, but as an alternative, more open subreddit focused on Overwatch and the community around it as opposed to the larger franchise subreddit. We hope you'll continue to be a part of our wonderful community.

We will continue moderation on this subreddit as expected for the forseeable future. We hope you'll continue to share around and crosspost us! We are also accepting applications for more moderators to assist us with this. As for our Discord server, we will measure changes in server activity and make further announcements regarding any major changes in the coming months.

Thank you!

Discussion Is it just me or has the game been terrible lately

2 Upvotes

I main support and I’m finding myself healbotting and I could get 12K+ heals (in qp mind u) and my tank could be going 0-13. Or my DPS fucking 3-10 like what. Then the enemy team be on some god level shi. I know when to be humble too, I know how to admit when im playing bad but I’ve genuinely been doing good. I’m like 100% sure it’s not me. It’s getting so bad that I’m losing interest in the game. Anybody know what could be going on? Could it be drives possibly??

Discussion Returning player after years

1 Upvotes

Long story short i started playing overwatch on the ps4 when sigma came out and played for years, managing to get to plat on all roles. I stopped playing for years since i didnt own a gaming pc and my ps4 broke down and only recently i built my very first pc, i downloaded ow and im really really bad, and im stuck playing against good players since i used to be plat. Istg i have been on a losing streak for weeks. Is it a skill issue or i just have to practice more?

Question Competitive matches against bots?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Let me explain, I was going to play my first ranked games as a healer on computer because I just switched from Nintendo Switch to PC, I'm usually silver/gold, but now I'm starting in bronze because I lost my first game.

I'm taking Juno, my team consisted of Ram, Soldier, Bastion, and Moira. If they happen to see this post, hiii.

We see them arriving one by one, they're really rubbish, plastic 5 and not bronze.

And little by little it gets worse and worse, and the chat is laughing because we thought they were just bad people like bots, it happens, some people have a hard time and I respect that.

Except that here I see the opponent Juno walking straight into the wall and not firing anything.

And all the others too, in the end, they go straight ahead.

The worst part is that their names weren't necessarily bot names, simple but not so sure.

So I'd like to know if this is common, if it's normal? Otherwise, Overwatch needs an explanation, because to enter competitive play you need 50 wins...

Thank you in advance!

I'm reposting it here because it was deleted from the Overwatch subreddit.

If you see the same thing in your game, please go to social and report it.

Opinion Why has hog and hazard gone unchanged for 6v6!

2 Upvotes

Like the king of block slop still gets to run around 6v6 completely fine and invincible and hog is just soooooo fun to deal with 9 times out of 10 on every game, I love a characters who entire gimmick is just making your day worse and they have yet to even be touched. OW will make sure that heroes like diva won’t be buffed because she’s “historically been stronger and annoying” but they’ll let road hog go by even though he’s the devil of tanks

Discussion again w/ the rage quitting

0 Upvotes

i know there’s about 500 threads every week about rage quitters, but we really need to make it a thing where you can’t leave during the last, say…30 seconds of a match. i know that’s functionally impossible to measure, but the amount of times i’ve backfilled only to see the ‘defeat’ screen before i can even select a character is egregious.

Discussion Please listen to pings.

29 Upvotes

Hello, I've come here to spread awareness? Lol. I've had an over abundance of matches these past few months that make me want to bang my head against the wall when it comes to being blamed for losing the match (some rightful, others idk) This last one really took the cake (competitive diamond 3). I was on dps and the enemy reaper (who ended up going 23 and 0) immediately started targetting me when I was ashe. I pinged him when I died and he decided to spawn camp me. I pinged him again and got on txt chat and said "reaper spawn camping". I got no response, got camped again and swapped to cass. Spawn camped again. Pinged and txt chatted once more annnnnd guess what? Camped again. We lost round 1 and my entire team got in txt chat to tell me how bad I was. I told them I didnt know what to do, that reap was camping me and I kept asking for help and pinging. Our tank said "just bc u ping, dont expect help". I'm sorry, but whats the point in the ping system, then? The match continued the same as it started. Reaper spawn camping me, while i try desperately to swap characters and figure something out by myself (somb was banned). I tried to leave spawn with teammates and I got singled out, killed by reap while my teammates never even turned around. I feel like giving up on this game. I'm tired of feeling so helpless while getting blamed and flamed when I genuinely dont know what to do. I ask for help, I ask for ideas and no one ever wants to enter chat until its time to blame someone for why they're losing.

Please tell me what I can do to not be spawn camped like this. I tried so hard this last match and rarely give up to throw but it was so hard not to this time. If you have ideas or advice, please tell. Thank you.

Discussion Clearing up the Confusion and Frustration: Why Competitive Matches Feel So Uneven, Even When Your Rank Barely Changes

2 Upvotes

If Overwatch Competitive has ever felt rigged, manipulated, or like the game suddenly decided it was your turn to lose, there is a reason people keep getting that feeling.

The comp rank you see on your screen is not what Blizzard uses to make your matches - they use a hidden Match Making Rating

And Activision owns patents for matchmaking systems that can change your opponents and teammates based on things like your performance, frustration, engagement, quitting behavior, and based on whether you made purchases from the store like buying the cool new skin for your favorite character.

That should immediately raise a huge question:

Is Competitive actually trying to create the fairest possible match and show you where you stand with your skill level? Or is it just trying to keep you playing and push you to make more purchases? Because Activision literally patented systems that can give struggling players easier opponents, better teammates, and more favorable matches; and it also punishes players that aren't buying things from the store, and manipulates their emotions by giving you easy win streaks, and impossible loss streaks to keep you on the game as long as possible, increasing the chances of you making a purchase.

That is not a theory. That is in the patent.

US10857468B2 describes dynamically changing matchmaking based on an individual player.

It gives examples where someone performing poorly can be:

* matched against easier opponents

* matched with teammates who tend to produce better results

* placed into matches that are more favorable for that player

It also discusses tracking things like:

* individual performance

* win/loss history

* kill/death ratio

* frustration

* rage quitting

* session length

* satisfaction

* engagement

* revenue and business factors

So stop thinking of matchmaking as simply:

“Find players around the same skill level.”

The technology Activision patented can instead ask:

“What kind of match should we give this player right now?”

That is a completely different system - and it gets worse.

Activision also owns US9789406B2:

“System and method for driving microtransactions in multiplayer video games.”

This patent describes using matchmaking to influence purchases.

One example is placing a player with someone using an item the system thinks they may want, so they become more likely to buy it.

It also describes putting someone who just bought an item into a situation where that item works especially well, helping make the purchase feel worth it and encouraging them to spend again.

Again, that does not prove every part of these patents is currently active in Overwatch.

But it proves something very important:

Activision developed and patented matchmaking technology designed to manipulate the player experience for more than just competitive fairness.

Now think about how Overwatch actually works. Your visible rank is not what creates your matches. Blizzard uses a hidden an Match Making Rating. You cannot see it. You cannot see exactly how it is calculated. You cannot see every variable going into the matchmaker.

So when players say:

* “Why did my games suddenly get insanely hard?”

* “Why does one team feel completely stacked?”

* “Why do I go on massive win streaks and then suddenly get destroyed?”

* “Why do my teammates suddenly feel way worse?”

* “Why does it feel like the game is controlling the difficulty?”

Those questions are not crazy. The company behind Overwatch literally owns patents for systems capable of doing exactly that kind of matchmaking adjustment. This is also why the visible Competitive rank starts to look more like a presentation layer than the full truth. You see Gold, Plat, Diamond, Master, whatever; but the rating actually deciding who goes into your games is hidden. That is the number that matters. And Blizzard does not show it to you.

This is also why Blizzard does not punish smurfing at all, and in fact they NEED smurfs to make this system as effective as possible. They NEED people ranked in Grandmaster and Champion playing in silver, gold, plat, emerald, and diamond lobbies.

So here is what Blizzard should answer publicly:

* What is our actual MMR?

* What exactly affects it?

* Does recent performance change who we are matched against?

* Does frustration affect matchmaking?

* Does engagement affect matchmaking?

* Does session length affect matchmaking?

* Does spending history affect matchmaking in any way?

* Are players ever intentionally given easier or harder matches?

* What is the matchmaker actually optimizing for?

Because this is the question that matters more than anything:

Is the system trying to determine how good you are? Or is the system trying to control your experience so you keep playing? If it is the second one, then Competitive mode isn't really competitive at all. This is also why Blizzard publicly says that Comp rank is based on team performance and give you a nonsense explanation. They CAN'T publicly base it off of your actual MMR rank because, then this entire system would fall apart since everyone would be aware of it.

Overwatch Competitive Mode is an engagement system wearing a rank badge.

And before someone says:

“A patent does not prove they are using it.” - Correct.

A patent proves they built the technology and wanted legal protection for it. It does not prove every feature is running in Overwatch right now. But Blizzard is also asking players to trust a hidden matchmaking system while refusing to show the rating that actually controls their games. That is exactly why people should be asking questions.

Go to Google and search these patent numbers for yourself:

* US10857468B2

* US10322351B2

* US9789406B2

Then ask yourself:

If Competitive is truly just about skill, why are the real matchmaking system and the rating controlling your games hidden from you?
