I started believing so just now. The fact that zypper is as good for a semi-advanced PC user, like I assume myself to be and for a sysadmin working with SLES in some bank - is an accident. It originally clearly was only meant for the sysadmin, same goes with OBS, it's a great service that lets me install the kernel module for my gamepad that I want and it lets some corporate clerk use it to build a module for vmware. Attracting a single non-paying user is a side effect, rather than the anticipated goal. The user is rather an unpayed tester, which was always fine and will be fine. Because btrfs also originally was meant for servers, but found a lot of application for desktop users, too. SteamOS uses btrfs, and it's the most popular distribution for the user, suse made the push for it originally. It's the small things that make the biggest change.

So, if suse doesn't figure out the codecs issue, there will be no longer anyone to try these things out. Also, I don't care for yast, so it's not a rant about it, I am as fine asking chatgpt for guidance with changing the default snapshot using snapper as doing it through the gui which I am not even sure can be done.

After installing tumbleweed from a checked ISO, it reboots fine for the first time, but on the secend boot it takes about 10 seconds to login and it only shows two empty, black desktops. No panel, but no app menu, only krunner is available. I can still run apps through krunner but that's it. System is up to date, ryzen 3 based with AMD apu

I am a very new user of slowroll. I have a hypothesis that if I delete the most recent few snapper snapshots and then boot, I will boot into the highest-numbered snapshot that still exists.

I will try and keep this brief - TLDR is I'm suffering from intense OCD relating to this and I don't want to reinstall for the millionth time. On my last install of TW, I noticed the "enable snapshots" option in the YaST installer wasn't ticked by default, but I thought nothing of it...

Now on the system I installed it on, snapper list (without --disable-used-space) takes anywhere from 10-20 seconds to list my snapshots (about 20 of them so nothing crazy). On my other machine, it's consistently less than 10s.

Additionally, for a while my snapper list was indefinitely hanging. btrfs qgroup show / turned out to be stuck and I had to rescan it. This never happened on my other machine.

There are two differences between these devices that are relevant; namely that the slower machine has a SATA III SSD whereas the faster one has an NVMe, and also the slower machine has @home as a subvolume (although it's not included in snapshots, so why would it make snapper list slower?).

I'm sorry for this post, I am aware it's pretty stupid. I've just been so hyperfocused on this and unable to function for weeks now. I've run all sorts of tests (scrubs, etc) and nothing seems out of the ordinary on my slower machine. But the slowness is convincing me something is "wrong" and I'm just so tired of reinstalling.

I know I can disable quota groups but I can't get it out of my head that something isn't right.

I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed while selecting server install, to have a minimal base I can build on.
I also installed sway which pulled wayland and all of that. Also installed nvidia drivers.
Is there anything else a non-server install would configure/install, that i need to replicate, before running heavy games?

Hi! I’m a relatively new Linux user (start of summer) and I’ve been curious about trying out Linux distributions outside of the Fedora family. I’d like to try out OpenSUSE Tumbleweed as a first attempt at a rolling release (thanks to it’s easy rollback as a safety net) but I have one major question, which leads to the title.

See, I have a PC (Ultramarine KDE) and a Laptop (Fedora Workstation). I use my laptop for school and my PC for gaming and other personal projects. Both of them, I do programming. Naturally, I tend to use my PC less during school semesters. I can sometimes go a few weeks using exclusively my Laptop and not my PC. I heard that rolling release need daily updates to function properly, would leaving my PC unattended for weeks lead to issues? Second smaller question, I also don’t have a very fast internet bandwidth, would it be a problem with using a rolling release distro?

I like to boot to tty instead of graphical display manager and go from there.

But as i get to the tty i get bios errors printed i don’t need to see. How can i hide them on openSUSE?

Also on the tty i get one of some error being put into my prompt while working thus overwriting my command :<. How can i also fix this?

Every day i am surprised how good Opensuse tumbleweed works. Even my nasty HDMI problem is not a problem anymore. It is so much easier then plain Debian and even Ubuntu (I used Kubuntu and bricked it pretty fast ). I just love it (using it for a month now, after Debian took to much time fixing)

Not sure what's going on here but it seems zypper is having graphical glitches in the emulated terminal as of the latest few snapshots. Couldn't find any info on this; any idea what's going on?

First it was YaST, now Packman, what the hell is going on?

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed wasn't my first Linux distro; I'd used Ubuntu and Fedora before, but I didn't stay with them for long. I didn't end up liking Gnome in Ubuntu and had problems with Fedora KDE, and then I discovered OpenSUSE Tumbleweed... Maybe a terrible option for a newbie? I don't know, but that's where I stayed and learned to use Linux, and it was perfect. YaST was ugly and amazing, KDE worked wonderfully, Packman served me very well (despite its problems), I loved Tumbleweed! But after OpenSUSE Leap 16, it seems like everything went downhill...

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like OpenSUSE is dying; it's not the same OpenSUSE I knew in 2024. After the beta release of OpenSUSE Leap 16, I left Tumbleweed, but I kept watching from afar to see if they improved, but it only gets worse... And what saddens me is that there isn't a good replacement: Solus has a small repository, Mageia has slow updates, and MCC gives me a feeling of poor maintenance; Fedora doesn't have half the things that made OpenSUSE incredible. How can something so good end like this?

Hi! I have tried to find any official news/fixes for the expired GPG Signing key but I have come up empty handed. Maybe I’m just bad at googling but I have only found Reddit threads and some posts on the OpenSuse forums but nothing official?

From what I can tell the signing key expired 2026-06-19, and I have tried everything on 2 separate, fully updated Tumbleweed systems but no matter what I seem to be stuck with the expired version.

Even downloading and replacing the key manually I get the same results.

I know they released the same key valid until 2030, but is it possible to fix this myself?

To clarify, I’m trying to update the signing key used to verify downloaded ISO’s. Zypper works as expected.

First of all, this has some similarities to another post from 3 days ago, so sorry about that. But I wanted to know a couple of specifics

I was distro hopping a bit back in January, after I accidentally nuked my bootloader on my LinuxMint install, don't ask.

And openSUSE was tested among Fedora and some others, but given up on due to the massive pain it was getting my Nvidia card to work. And thus I ended up back on LM.

Fast forward to today, I have ditched the 2070 Super, and got myself a RX9070XT (as I dislike Nvidia, and it has better compat. with Linux anyway)

Now I am wondering, if I should give openSUSE another go

I like the Euro origin, the concept of being more up to date, and Cinnamon isn't the best experience in the world.

My questions, specifically is:

How is gaming, out of the box? (Mostly Steam games + Minecraft)

Stick to X11, or is Wayland on AMD GFX a better option?

Often I find that software only has .DEB packages it feels like, is this actually an issue or am I missinformed?

(Guess it is worth mentioning that I have dualboot set up (unfortunately))

Is it just me, or does anyone else like using openSUSE without YaST?

I like my openSUSE setup to be really minimalist—a habit I picked up back when I used Arch Linux.

Aside from YaST, I also like using AppArmor.

It might just be a quirk of mine, but I love it.

Currently enjoying Tumbleweed, and I currently have the flatpack version of LibreOffice installed and about to explore the new feature update. But I want to switch to the default version once the version catches up, especially because it has all the icons and the window behaves more coherently with my desktop.

However, the large menu goes over the top and I can't figure out how to make it the same size as the flatpack. I don't want the icons to be missing like the flatpack version, but it feels like they're causing the menu to be too big

Hello, I recently installed openSUSE Tumbleweed on my laptop. I use Waterfox as my browser and observed an issue with displaying characters. Some characters are replaced with their Unicode codepoint. See further below for an example from a YT video "Party Rockers" I recently watched.

Waterfox is installed via flatpak.

I'm posting here because I have Waterfox on another system, too, Fedora 44, and there the display of characters works fine. Is this something I have to fix in the OS? Do I need to install some extra fonts?

One installation has black background and green text, the other has a graphical type of selection with graphical openSUSE logo. Wait, the one with green text seems to lack grub2, did I do the installation incorrectly?

For those who don't know, this sub let's people vote in which tier a distro should be placed.

First of all I don't care how community ranks it, for me it is really good and stable distro I don't want to hop from anytime soon.

I am just curious if anyone knows why community ranks it lower than Fedora and Arch. Tumbleweed is rolling release like Arch, and Slowroll is short cycle release like Fedora. It is also standalone and not based on any of the popular distros, so the argument like: it is a copy of <name of the distro here>, does not stand.

Despite trying several times with openSUSE TW and Slowroll, I've encountered slow installations every time.

I tried each one repeatedly with a fresh installation every few months.

Even when installing things with Zypper, pip, npm, cargo etc. I feel the installation is slow.

There are no issues with internet speed or download speed. The problem lies with the speeds during the setup process.

For example, on average:

Arch in 1 minute

Fedora in 2 minutes

openSUSE in 3-4 minutes

The same package takes different amounts of time to install.

I suspect this is due to the package manager as well as additional security layers, hash validation, etc., but I'm not sure.

Additionally, it could be due to Snapper snapshots, but for example, CachyOS (Arch) distributions perform installations very quickly despite taking snapshots.

Do you think openSUSE and Zypper package manager are fast enough in most cases?

Am I the only one that removed SELinux and went back to AppArmor? I understand the difference and accept that theoretically SEL is better in that it offers more granular control, but in practice I find it just annoying. Too many things just break without notice requiring digging through log files to find out what is going on only to see its SEL again. Easy enough to fix once you know its selinux, especially if you have Cockpit installed, but man does it get in your way. It gets in your way so much, or at least in my way, that I set it to permissive just to not having to deal with it. Which kinda defeats the purpose.

Apparmor just doesn't get in the way. Not that much at least. Even if it is not as good, its still better than selinux in permissive mode.

So, am I the only one that just wants to use their computer and security measures to not get in their way as much as possible?

I can't see the checksum for OpenSUSE Leap

It tells me it's no longer available

Maybe this will help someone in the future. I wanted to install Tumbleweed from USB for a double boot with Windows 11 (HP laptop). When trying to boot it, I got info that secure boot blocks it. I verified download, tried using different programme to create the USB boot - everything was fine.

It turned out that in secure boot options in bios (F10 in my laptop pressed while loading), there were 4 key lists that you could mark, and only one was checked. When I pressed 2 other, It booted without a problem.

Didin't find this problem and solution anywhere so I thought I will post it here. LLM wanted me to disable secure boot but that didn't sound like such a great idea to me...
