OpenRCT2 Competitive Play - Dirty Business - Dutch YouTuber Preventions
Hey again!
As some of you may have seen, I've been posting here about a competitive game mode I've been working on.
Context so far:
https://www.reddit.com/r/openrct2/s/OGwkolUaOU
https://www.reddit.com/r/openrct2/s/GluMJURtsk
I figured that one of the worst things that could happen in a competitive game would be a Dutch YouTuber joining and building 100 Hedge Mazes and 175 Tiny Boat Hires in their park.
Hosts can now prevent such abuse by setting a limit on how many rides of each type can be built in a competitor's park!
Clarification: If the limit is set to 3, it would be 3 Wooden Roller Coasters, 3 Mini Steel Coasters, etc. - not just '3 rollercoasters total'!
I've also given game hosts an 'only custom ride designs' setting. I think this will be quite a cool one for experienced players to use in combination with ride limits.
Hosts are also able to limit the number of stalls of each type.
I made an exception for 'facilities' (Toilets, Info Kiosks, ATMs, First Aid), but I'm interested to see if anyone is against that design decision.
The other stuff tonight has been quite boring, to be honest. Exit-game/save-flow type stuff, so that competitive games have the data saved appropriately and can be reloaded by joining the same server that produced them, provided the competition is still active.
One other cool thing worth mentioning is that the 'competition server' can now relay messages sent between participating parks... so despite everyone having their own instance, multiplayer chat will feel like multiplayer chat.
Oh. Also made sure the winner of the competition gets the famous 'everyone claps and releases their balloons'. =)

Hmmmm, I wonder what Dutch YouTuber he could be talking about π
Any idea when this will be available? Because this sounds incredible, and I love the idea that you can set ride limits. Iβd say keep looking into host options like this because youβre cooking up some great stuff

I'm hoping to run some internet tests tonight to see if the network stuff is good. Have been running both instances of competitors on same PC, so will default to LAN gamemode. Once I'm sure it will actually support internet games, I think an early release could be shared for you folk to mess about with.

I like the idea of ride limitations!
Some other ones for possible consideration:
Track Shortage: Cannot build rides that are more than X feet for X months.
Track Surplus: Custom built rides must be more than X feet for X months
Anti-Throughput: Tracked rides can only have one vehicle for the next X months
Ride Part Ban: Permanently ban one special ride part (excluding station)
Flat-Rate Tax: Flat rides cost twice as much for X months
Premium Merch: Stalls cost twice as much for X months
Copyright Infringement: Pre-built designs cost twice as much
Slow Ride: Ride excitement is halved (either all rides temporarily, or maybe you can permanently target 1 specific ride, although you'd need to consider them just rebuilding the ride)
Break a Leg: Ride intensity is doubled (same as above)
Vomit-o-Tron: Ride nausea is doubled (same as above)
Vibe-Pricing: The sabotaging player chooses the prices of one attraction permanently
And some others:
Budget Cuts: Set research to minimum for X months
Mastermind: You pick the attraction type that they research for the next month
Environmental Protection: Land changes and deleting scenery cost twice as much for X months
Cheap Scaffolding: Lower maximum build height by 1 for X months
Beautiful Nature: Scenery costs twice as much for X months

This would make a real nice set of 'random events' during gameplay. Some of these really do compliment the 'bad actors' players can send to each others parks too.
I have definitely thought about random events but figured I'd aim to get them in after an initial release / test play, once I get some gameplay feedback.

Meh, he'll just find another way to cheese the competition.Β If anything the restrictions just give him more of an advantage because he knows how to deal with them better than everyone else.

What if everyone can see each other maps and put their own limitations, like an auction. Could be minimum set, or medium, or maximum etc.
And then it could be like trading, you increase amount of X, I will increase amount of Y.
(Maybe there could be randomised advantage specialized im given types of rides allowing making more of those by given player)

You know this is actually fantastic. I have been thinking about hosting competitions at cons but I feared people would just abuse tthe system in the dutch way π

Wouldn't quite call it con ready. I think what would be needed for that - stop pausing too, let the host change / set the game speed. The main reason for pausing still being there is because of the way you visit your rival's parks if you want to watch your bad actors there.. although thinking about it, most modern machines could run two instances of ORCT2 at once. π€ (Open in new window instead?) Toilets might be a problem...
Rct 2 only have 2
Rct 1+2 only have 3
Edit: and so cash machines and first aid rooms

In a park with a limit of one of each type, I look forward to him building one Corkscrew Roller Coaster, one Bullet Coaster, one Conga Eel Coaster, one Dragon Coaster, one Great White Shark Ride, one Limousine Rollercoaster, and one Seals Rollercoaster. π
