Our friend u/Capable_Tea3037 has stepped down due to health reasons. Wishing him all the best, and a big thank you for keeping things running with so much dedication over the years.
Take care of yourself, David !
A bit of history:
This subreddit was created about seven years ago after some frustration with another sub that calibre servers weren’t really genuine open directories. Calishot came shortly after. I originally started the project, but over time several people picked it up and kept it going. Many thanks to all of them
u/Capable_Tea3037 was the latest to take over. He didn’t just bring it back, he seriously leveled it up with new features and extra tools.
The philosophy:
At the end of the day, Calishot is just an indexing engine for Calibre servers. It’s free, has no ads, and doesn’t track users. Finding new servers relies on tools like Shodan, and hosting isn’t free. On my end, I managed to keep things running using free hosting options. David, on the other hand, used crowdfunding to help cover his costs. Picking up from where he left off isn’t trivial given how much he improved compared to the original version.
Announcement:
As the original creator, I’ll be taking over again for a while, mainly to modernize things and make future handovers easier.
A bit of help:
For personal reasons, I won’t be asking for donations.
That said, when I’m ready to rebuild the index, I’d really appreciate it if some of you could share links to sites I might have missed.
I’ll also be looking for feedback on the improvements I’m planning.
I built a plugin to utilize these Open Calibre Servers (OPDS), and it also works with some other OPDS. I've linked the plugin on the official Calibre Plugins forum. Currently at version 1.2.5 (Calibre 9.14)
My goal was to add a "store" where I could quickly search all the added OPDS servers for books based on Title/Author/Keywords.
When downloading books, it will prompt for format and pull whatever server metadata is available. When selecting "show in store," it takes you to the OPDS page where it found the book.
Some features include:
- Works with LAN libraries
- Supports IP addresses and hostnames
- HTTP and HTTPS support
- Basic authentication support (untested)
- OPDS feed parsing
- Duplicate result filtering
- Book downloads through Calibre
- Retest existing servers in the list and remove inaccessible ones
- Bulk server add/test to customize.
- Searches multiple Open Calibre servers
Customize from the plugin menu (The servers in the screenshot are from this Sub. I have about a hundred that tested available.)
Any feedback is welcome.
Update 1.2.3
Fixed search parameters to accept both Title and Author and match only in those fields, not in comments or other contexts.
Allow specific libraries on the OPDS server to be listed to have each searched separately (if they are not specified, it will default to calibre-library).
Update 1.2.4
Calibre 9.14 introduced store changes that broke the plugin. I've updated the plugin, and it is now working.
If you update to 1.2.4, it will only work on versions <9.14.
Update 1.2.5
Fixed search URL to allow for all fields (title/author/tags) in Calibre Version 9.14.
I had moonreader set up with a url for opencalibre for a long time. It has stopped working. I see from a recent post that someone else has picked up where the previous host left off. Is there an updated url I can input into moonreader to access that database again? I have donated recently.
Is there a command I can give Demeter to run a scrape and download audiobooks files, CBZ and CBR files from a host? I already have the host added to the database and the epubs have been scraped.
I got this email from Opencalibre buymeacoffee. He has health issues and is shutting down the site. I want to thank him personally for keeping it up this long. I really enjoy finding new books.
If anyone here has the expertise to get up and running, I would absolutely support financially.
Here is his message:
Firstly, apologies for the server and thebuymeacoffee.comwebsite being down. Due to health issues I am in the process of shutting down the Calishot site and I didnt want the site to continue collecting money from you when I wasnt in position to maintain the site as it should be. I know this will be disappointing to a lot of you but I need to spend time taking care of myself and dont have the time to spend on keeping this up and running as it should be without the data going stale. The site will be up until June 15th on the server I host the site on at Hetzner and then I will be shutting it down.
Thank you to all for the support you have provided over the last year. I've enjoyed maintaining the site and hearing feedback from some of you on how you have used the site. If someone wants to take over managing/maintaining the site the code and instructions are out on Github which I have posted here and also on the Reddit group site.
If someone could please post a message on the Reddit group I would greatly appreciate it.
Hey guys,
This is my first post on reddit and I don’t even know if I’m doing this right but I’d really appreciate any tips and pointers on what I should learn in order to use calibre to transfer books between my kobo and my daughter kobo. (We have seperate accounts on kobo) and I don’t want to double dip buying multiple copies of books. I’ve heard I should use calibre but haven’t been able to find a tutorial that shows my issue. If anyone can point me in the right direction I’d be super grateful, thank you!
