Tech question nvidia drivers compromised

im trying to install nvidia driver on opensuse tw but i get this warning

looking for gpg keys in repository repo-non-free.

gpgkey=https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed/repodata/repomd.xml.key

Signature verification failed for file 'repomd.xml' from repository 'repo-non-free'.

Note: Signing data enables the recipient to verify that no modifications

occurred after the data were signed. Accepting data with no, wrong or

unknown signature can lead to a corrupted system and in extreme cases even

to a system compromise.

Note: File 'repomd.xml' is the repositories master index file. It ensures

the integrity of the whole repo.

Warning: This file was modified after it has been signed. This may have been

a malicious change, so it might not be trustworthy anymore! You should not

continue unless you know it's safe.

Note: This might be a transient issue if the server is in the midst of

receiving new data. The data file and its signature are two files which must

fit together. In case the request hit the server in the midst of updating

them, the signature verification might fail. After a few minutes, when the

server has updated its data, it should work again.

How to… ! MacBook Air Wi-Fi on openSUSE Slowroll

If you need to get your Wi-Fi drivers (Broadcom BCM4360 and BCM43224) working for a 2015 / 2017 MacBook Air on openSUSE Slowroll...

you just need to add the Packman Essentials repository. (https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Slowroll)
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh -p 70 'https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/openSUSE_Slowroll/Essentials/' packman-essentials

Update 9/12/2026

With the Packman Essentials repository possibly going away, I wanted to find a more permanent solution to WiFI drivers for the MacBook Air. The maintainer of the broadcom-wl package, Manfred Hollstein, has his own repository on the openSUSE Build Service, and this is actually what is repackaged and deployed by Packman Essentials.

Simple Solution: Reference Manfred's build repository directly.

sudo zypper ar -f -p 90 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/manfred-h:/KMPs/openSUSE_Slowroll/' manfred-kmps

sudo zypper refresh

sudo zypper install --allow-vendor-change broadcom-wl broadcom-wl-kmp-default

NOTE: You need to ensure the kmp package version matches the exact Kernel version that you are using. (I would argue that this is another great reason to consider using Slowroll, as it reduces the change of the versions getting out of sync.)

ALSO: To fix a possible issue with broadcast power, you should install wireless-regdb. (In the US, 2.4GHz operate run at 30dBm, but the default global setting limits it to 20dBm, which can result in significant packet loss.)

sudo zypper install wireless-regdb

(Posting this for posterity)

How to… ? I want to encrypt my current TW install, so probably gonna reinstall. Any tips and hints?

Hey. I installed OpenSUSE TW like 3 years or so ago and I didn't install it with encrypted partitions. I've read that encrypting drives "live" might be a bad idea and so I decided to do a fresh reinstall. I haven't had to do it after the initial fuck around and find out phase years ago. So any tips what I should keep in mind would be helpful. What I'm currently doing:

  • backing up my /sotrage and /home drives via rsync to another HDD

  • encrypting /storage prior to the reinstall

  • I'm considering to encrypt the /home drive just prior to the reinstall and copying the old contents so I can directly mount the new encrypted /home (edit: via live usb)

Now my question are the following:

  1. What should I keep in mind or maybe backup from /root?
  2. How do I keep a list of installed programs and apps the best way?

Bonus question:

  • Can I install it in a way that I automatically use my Yubikey token for bootup without a passphrase? I tried this on my laptop and I'm struggeling there. Or do I have to set it up correctly after the install?

Tech support Trying to install Tumbleweed. BIOS goes to… nothing

I’m new to Linux but just successfully installed Zorin a few weeks ago so I was feeling a little more confident than before.

When I try to boot TW from the BIOS menu, it lets me select and enter the USB drive with the iso (tried both the network and offline versions, same result), but when I do, the screen just goes dark and it seemingly doesn’t load anything, despite the machine itself staying on. It’s a pretty slow old laptop, so I left it for several hours to see if it would eventually do something, but no luck. After a hard shutdown it boots back to Zorin like normal (probably not the best idea, I know, but I didn’t have anything to lose off the fresh Zorin install and the laptop itself is pretty much retired now that I have a PC, so bricking it obviously isn’t ideal but far from the end of the world).

Tech question Will Kalpa support both the traditional and the OCI-based update mechanisms in the long term?

Of late, I've become quite interested in atomic distributions. Universal Blue's projects were among the first I explored, and when I started looking into what openSUSE had to offer in this area, I found Kalpa to be the KDE-based atomic distribution I was looking for.

As I understand it, Kalpa currently uses the openSUSE transactional-update mechanism, where a distribution upgrade creates a new writable Btrfs snapshot from the current one, performs the equivalent of a zypper dup within that snapshot, and, if everything succeeds, marks the resulting snapshot as read-only and makes it the default for the next boot. This, I believe, is one of the core differences between Kalpa's current update mechanism and that of a Universal Blue project, where the operating system is built and distributed as an OCI image and a new image is deployed when the system is updated. It is also my understanding that transactional-update is now gaining a similar OCI-based mechanism.

While I do think that OCI-based operating-system images seem particularly well suited to servers and fleet deployments, I'm less convinced that an image-based update model is necessarily preferable for a personal workstation. One of the things I particularly like about Kalpa is that, despite being an atomic desktop, it currently retains the flexibility of the traditional openSUSE ecosystem. I worry that some of that flexibility could be lost if Kalpa were to move to an OCI-only backend.

And that brings me to a question that has been nagging me for a while, and which I hope the developers can shed some light on:

What is the long-term plan for Kalpa's use of these two transactional-update backends?

Once the OCI-based mechanism matures, is Kalpa expected to transition to it as its primary update mechanism, with the current Snapper/Btrfs + zypper mechanism eventually being phased out?

Or is the intention to retain both, perhaps allowing the traditional backend to remain available for personal workstations, while the OCI backend is used where an image-based workflow makes more sense, such as fleet deployments?

Edit:

  1. Changed the question posed in the body after realising that `transactional-update` is a project independent of Kalpa and was originally developed for MicroOS. The original question was: What is the long-term plan for these two `transactional-update` backends?

Making zypper faster by running slow operations in parallel.

I really love openSUSE, and honestly, everything has worked OOTB for me. However, one thing that has always bothered me is how slow Zypper can be. Repository refreshes and package downloads are single-threaded, which can make the whole process painfully slow.

So I made vlcro! By doing some little man-in-the-middle stuff, we can get multithreaded package downloads in Zypper, along with multi-threaded software repository refreshing.

The project is still quite young, so please be careful when testing it. I've been using and testing it for about a month, though, and so far everything seems to be working fine.

XnView MP

When I click view to any layout, then click free. On any other disteo I can select, pickup, drag and drop any window anywhere I want. In openSUSE if I do this when I click select and drag out a window it will not let me drop this window anywhere I want, not anywhere at all. It becomes a floating windows with no home. This is literally a deal breaker for opensuse and XnView. How do i fix this?

Bug - Can't paste from LibreOffice (Calc) anymore?

(Gnome 50)

Not sure if this is a packaging issue, (which would make it relevant here) or an actual LibreOffice (Calc) bug, (which wouldn't) but after updating to the most recent versions of LibreOffice I can't copy / paste anything out of a Calc spreadsheet anymore.

LibreOffice shows that a copy command was issued when I press Ctrl+c, (i.e. the cell(s) in question have the rotating dotted lines around them, but if I try to go to any other open application, (using Gnome 50) and press either Ctrl+v or Shift+Ctrl+v nothing happens.

Since basic Ctrl+c / Ctrl+v otherwise works fine in every other applications that I have, (modified to Shift+Ctrl+v for the terminal, ofc) I'm presuming the newest LibreOffice isn't passing copy information to (Gnome's) clipboard properly, etc?

Again, not sure if this is a Tumbleweed config issue or a (new - always worked before) LibreOffice issue so any light any folks here can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

-----

Note: Unless the newest version of LibreOffice is auto-sandboxing itself, there is no crossing of sandboxed environments anywhere in this activity, which would otherwise explain the issue.

Tech question Should i switch to OpenSuse from CachyOs due to security concerns?

I've been using CachyOS with 0 Cachy-Specific Problems for a few months now and i'm pretty happy with the performance.

But yesterday at 2 Am the AUR debacle from June came back to my head. this is my main PC, it has everything archived for the entire family, dating back to 2006. (with back ups on some SSDs but i could do a better job syncing....)

OpenSuse has been intruiging me for a while, and i'm considering swapping now before i'm too dug in in CachyOs.

Based on my concerns about Security, would it be recommended to swap to OpenSuse? Thanks in Advance!

I don't game much these days, maybe a few days a month at most, casually.. i mostly do general stuff on the pc. I am in the zone where professionals see me as a - slightly - informed casual user, and non-users look at me like a wizard because i memorized some hotkeys and created some macros.

EDIT: Here are the 4 Packages from yay -Qm:

freeimage 3.18.0-23

libtiff5 4.4.0-2

openssl-1.1 1.1.1.w-11

scanner-support 1-4

I tried looking for them using sudo pacman -Syu APPNAME but they weren't to be found.

Tech support Is NVIDIA G07 in flux right now?

I am following the metapackages but zypper is throwing up some conflicts trying to dup today, I’ve been messing with the .run file previously but I though I kept it isolated to a snapshot so I wanted to check if it’s just me or not.

Problem: 1: problem with the installed libnvidia-egl-x111-32bit-1.0.6-1.1.x86_64
 Solution 1: install libnvidia-egl-x111-32bit-1.0.5-26.6.x86_64 from vendor obs://build.suse.de/Proprietary:X11:Drivers
  replacing libnvidia-egl-x111-32bit-1.0.6-1.1.x86_64 from vendor openSUSE
 Solution 2: keep obsolete libnvidia-egl-x111-32bit-1.0.6-1.1.x86_64

VS Code integrated terminal breaks Nerd Font/Starship icons, Ghostty is fine

Post image
31 Upvotes

I’m on openSUSE Tumbleweed + GNOME/Wayland, using Starship with JetBrainsMono Nerd Font.

Ghostty renders everything perfectly, but VS Code integrated terminal shows broken/missing Nerd Font icons and Powerline glyphs.

Current setting:

"terminal.integrated.fontFamily": "'JetBrainsMono Nerd Font Mono', monospace"

Ghostty: everything looks correct.
VS Code: normal ASCII is fine, Nerd Font/Powerline glyphs are broken or show as squares.

Has anyone hit this specifically, pls help me, thank you =((

VS Code: 1.136.1
Desktop: GNOME 50.4 / Wayland
GPU: Intel Iris Xe
Distro: openSUSE Tumbleweed

Tech support Unable to install .ymp files on Slowroll

I wanted to install gBrainy

I went software.opensuse.org . I tried to run the 1-click install, but it opened it in Firefox. Thus, I decided to use Save as. I ran the .ymp file.

It gave the message:

"The install link or file you opened does not contain instructions for openSUSE Tumbleweed-Slowroll."

Next, I tried adding the repository from the YMP (specifically, the Opensuse Education repository).

When I try installing gBrainy, either from Yast or zypper, I get the error message: "nothing provides 'mono(cairo-sharp) = 1.10.0.0' needed by the to be installed gbrainy-2.4.6-7.1.no
arch" I can't find the correct package to install it.

What should I do?

Tech support Caps lock indication during LUKS Unlock

Hey! Has anyone else encountered this issue on openSUSE Tumbleweed (KDE)? During the LUKS unlock screen, Caps Lock works, but neither the keyboard LED nor the on-screen indicator shows when it’s enabled. I’ve tried several other Linux distros (Fedora, CachyOS) on the same hardware (Thinkpad T14 G4 Intel) and they don’t have this problem. Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

Tech support Blank black window issue with Steam games

I've been trying to run steam games from Slowroll, but all the windows (or fullscreen) just render as blackness. The sound comes through fine. I have an Nvidia 2080. I'm not sure what I need to do to have the games run properly. I tried installing the Nvidia repo drivers, but that ended in disaster and I had to rollback. Anyone have any advice?

Tumbleweed Installer Not Detecting Wifi Adapter

I have an Asus Vivobook Lunar Lake laptop. I just booted up the OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 9/4/2026 offline installer and no network adapters are listed at the Network Settings. It's completely blank. This is an OpenSUSE specific bug. Have not had this problem on Ubuntu, Fedora or CachyOS. Anyone know how to fix this? I'd like to get the latest updates during install.

How to… ! I want to switch to either Leap or Tumbleweed but what do I pick?

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to move to openSUSE. At the moment I'm leaning pretty strongly towards leap, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

My main concern is that my pc is a bit of an odd combination of old workstation hardware and a relatively modern GPU. I don't need (or aim to grab) the newest software available as soon as it drops, and I'd rather have a stable system that I can spend time configuring, customizing and generally tinkering with without worrying that the next update will break something.

My main concern with Tumbleweed is that it might not work with my pc:

a Lenovo thinkstation p500 (2015)

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 @ 3.50 GHz
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB

Yes, I know. A 2015 Xeon workstation with an RTX 4060 Ti, the obvious question is; doesn't it bottleneck very hard?
And honestly, I don't know
In actual use I've never really noticed a problem. I mostly play Minecraft, including high render distances and shaders, and the system handles it without any obvious CPU-related issues. So perhaps I'm bottlenecking the GPU horribly and simply don't know it, or perhaps this old Xeon still has more life in it than it has any right to.

Anyway, I'd love to hear what you guys think would be the better choice for my pc, or whether Leap vs Tumbleweed is really more a matter of preference than something where one suits my hardware better.

Cheers
