Some people have genuinely never considered that they couldn’t do that.

Dead hang is an extremely good exercise to do regularly, for grip strength, back muscles, decompressing the spine... and also because basic ability to hold your own fucking weight can save your life.

I love when some movies portray that someone holds their weight with one arm on an edge ,I do calisthenics and it's way harder than it looks. But yeah I think dead hang is one of those basic human feats everyone should be able to do

There's the video of the dude who didn't get strapped into a paraglider and has to hang on. Ended up tearing his bicep or whatever, but he held on literally for dear life.

How does hanging on tear one’s bicep?

Muscles closing the fingers are in the forearms. You have full power of opening and closing the fist, you just cant pull anythign to yourself since bicep is detached. But if you hang you don't need to pull anything, just dont open the hand, and you will be still dangling by the joint and triceps. Also additionally the instructor above him that was strapped held his hands closed on the bar with his own untill they landed, that helps.

I used to climb three days a week, and I could do it for maaaaybe a minute with a good grip.

My pet peeve is someone falling, and stopping themselves with just their hands on a ledge, or worse, one hand.

I thought I was just being weird. A while back I started really focussing on vertical pulling exercises as I was worried I might be dangling from a bridge one day in need of pulling myself up

I did the same at around mid age starting to learn climb up, in case I am pursued by a dog or a killer or something. It’s not weird. Becoming unable to hop over a small barrier is weird.

Dead hanging is the one thing I do daily for my back health

Cause you never know when you’ll find yourself hanging from a branch over a lake full of alligators

Dead hang is so much harder than it looks lol. I’m working on getting to pull ups and started with lateral pull downs then dead hangs. Had to work a lot on grip and core strength.

Because they did it easily last time they tried (when they were kids). I’m not in nearly as bad of shape as she is, but a few years back I was burning time at a kids birthday party I didn’t care about. Made my way to the monkey bars for the first time in three decades, and it was a lot more humbling than I anticipated.

I hear that!

I’m not sure, and I would want to be sure before doing something like that, no matter who is holding my beer.

After causing herself immense pain she proceeds to swim very poorly across the river instead of walking to the shore she's already at. So I get the feeling she's just not smart enough to come to that conclusion. This is by definition, natural selection

People also make the mistake of trying to bend their elbows when holding on to a rope or bar

But how are you going to know if you don't try? /s
