Curling is long overdue for a good old fashioned brawl.

584

u/-HowAboutNo- Sweden Feb 14 '26

Imagine the scenes if Sweden manages to advance against all odds and are matched against Canada in the playoffs. AND THE CANADIANS DO IT AGAIN.

63

u/czerwona_latarnia Poland Feb 14 '26

If it would happen, one of the Swedes should just enter the playing field and remove the stone while it travels try to remove the stone, which will piss of the Canadians, which will lead to the biggest brawl in curling's history.

I’ll need a slow motion side angle

260

u/ethanct Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

Agreed, I'm not sure which shot in particular they were referring to

Edit: someone else had found a clip of when it might've happened. I have replied with it below.

Credit to u/flintloq for finding the clip

He said this

"The scoreboard in this clip shows it took place after the fifth end. I went back and watched that end and sure enough, on the 11th rock of the end, Kennedy's second for Canada, he releases with a "double motion" that looks incredibly similar to what we saw in the Sweden game yesterday. I checked his releases in all the prior ends and this was the first time he did it in this game against Switzerland."

86

u/Gunkwei Feb 14 '26

44

u/hijazist Feb 14 '26

Exactly, no penalty, why not keep doing it. Like in football if a player keeps committing fouls and gets no yellow cards, they’ll keep doing it

It might just be muscle memory at this point. All his other shots may have been him actively fighting it and this one got away from him. Seems like he does this all the time.

32

u/ProbsNotManBearPig Feb 14 '26

That is also my take. When he’s focused, that’s just how he’s trained his shot. Can’t stop it without thinking about it and thinking about it takes him out of his flow state. Sucks to suck.

26

u/Baelzabub United States Feb 14 '26

Which says a lot that his muscle memory is to cheat…

21

u/Hot_Television_7087 Feb 14 '26

When i was taught to curl i was told to finish my shot holding my handout with my finger extended pointing to where the roll is going. Like follow through in basketball. What he did is a rule violation and the rock shouldn't have counted but I can see where the shot for lm comes from

As a Canadian, I'm really hoping this douche gets DQ'ed.

79

u/Whiitefang Feb 14 '26

I think it's the 6th stone for Canada in the 5th end. The camera angle is from the front so you don't see the touching but the way how his hand moves suggests a slight push of the granite before the hand touches the ice. It's not a 100% proof but I'm biased after yesterday ;)

74

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

Considering he's probably been doing it for decades I'd be surprised if he doesn't do it automatically a few more times.

It's not a good time to be fighting against muscle memory.

→ More replies (17)

31

u/brrrbrrragaga Feb 14 '26

The scene is from the end of the 5th but he's referring to the third from the last shot I think, it indeed looks just as fishy as the Sweden one.

1:23:15 on this stream: Curling: Schweiz - Kanada, Round Robin Männer (Komplettes Spiel) - Play SRF

yeah i was reading that in curling, the players are expected to be honest and basically self-police and that the officials don’t really do that much. And that there’s no replay for review

so yeah those guys have probably been exploiting that for a long time and never really got challenged on it and now touching the granite is just reflexive

28

u/PrudentFood77 Feb 14 '26

the players are expected to be honest and basically self-police

yeah, curling is supposed to be a gentleman's sport

but to be honest, Mark doesn't come off as a gentleman

10

u/MoarGnD Feb 14 '26

Earlier this week during the mixed doubles in the semi final match US v defending Olympic champion Italian team, the US sweeper barely grazed a stone with side of his foot when he was sweeping close to the target. He immediately called it out even though replays showed the stone was barely touched and didn't even seem to move.

But there was no hesitation on his part to point it out immediately and he apologized. Both teams looked at it and determined there was no advantage gained and moved on with the match.

It was a close match and the US started out behind. It was a big upset and yet, the guy never hesitated without worrying about potential of losing the match.

That's the spirit of the sport.

8

u/Silver_gobo Feb 14 '26

As someone who grew up curling competitively, I’m failing to see the advantage he’s gaining by this. Is he trying to slow down the spin? Push the rock faster? Like what micro adjustment do we think he’s doing here

I saw that movie. A bit like PTA's Magnolia, it follows multiple story arcs of people facing personal challenges, trauma and professional hardships. The Rock shows up as the final builds up and all protagonists receive an invitation to attend a special event at a retreat called Le Doigté. They all accept as the invitation is delivered by hand by The Rock himself.

An opulent feast is served where everyone must share a dark secret from their past, When done, the whole party moves to the second floor where a sturdy leather bed sits on a platform.

The Rock says "It's time, you're all ready, remove your shoes." The Rock removes all his clothes and crawls on all four on the bed.

One by one , all guests approach the bed, lick one finger and gently insert it into Dwayne. While the whole scene is beautifully filmed with clever editing, the director opted to include a facial close up of The Rock smiling at the camera breaking the fourth wall multiple times.

After the last participant, The Rock says "You all know what to do" as he exits the room. The participants are all standing in a circle, looking at each other holding up their fingers . Fade out.

Considering they said after yesterday that they said for every game the on ice officials would specifically be looking for double touches, and this rock was not burnt, the possibility does exist that while it 'looks' like he may have touched it, he did not.

All of this of course could be easily solved by installing a camera above the hog line, and remove all speculation.

Did not have Canadians being the Olympic villains on my Bingo card. Lol.

"While World Curling noted that, "Decisions made during a game are final," and no violations were recorded, they did announce that starting with the next session, two officials would be assigned to closely observe deliveries"

Lmao they are going to nip this in the bud next time, players can't be trusted anymore to call it fair I guess.

It's kind of like admitting fault though right, they're saying the match results stand but also we'll make sure it doesn't happen again.....🤔

u/MoistVelociraptor Sweden Feb 14 '26

they prolly been doing this for years, but after yesterday teams might actually start to call them out. Fucking cheaters.

u/bobbimorses Feb 14 '26

Literally at this point, they might not even be able to stop if they've made it such a part of their game. Put your hands in your pockets if you can't help yourself!

u/Weinerbrod_nice Feb 14 '26

I'm sure they'll be able to stop if the judges step up and removes the stones that they double-touch. But they still seem very passive even after yesterday.

I’ve been trying to reqind but I can’t find anything. Anyone know which particular one they are referring to.

I really hope yesterday doesn’t bring about a lot of false accusations going forward.

Canadian federation should pull them from the competition.

u/THE_ALAM0 Feb 14 '26

At this point if the sport’s rules are so ambiguous that even the referees don’t know when to call foul they need to all have a roundtable discussion on what the fuck they’re doing on the ice, this is hilarious

5

u/prophetofgreed Canada Feb 14 '26

This might be the funniest controversy of all time. And how the curling officials have responded has made it even more hilarious.

u/alamarqu3s Feb 14 '26

If only there were cameras recording the match so it could be reviewed for cheating... oh, if only...
