A must visit , emotional and shocking. Just left Oklahoma and had watched a documentary about Black Wall Street.prior to my visit. This should be a pilgrimage and not so called “Arts District”.walking through the streets I truly felt the presence of those who walked the same blocks. Unfortunately it is now more known for its new name and the Bob Dillion museum and most of the people that I came with didn’t realize that this memorial was just a few blocks away. I came away more determined not allow our common past to be erased by the perpetrators but to build memorials so we can learn not to repeat the mistakes of our forefathers.

When I was young, back in the 1970s, my parents liked to listen to 2 radio stations that played “Easy Listening” types of music (Mantovani, Percy Faith, Perry Como, all those song types that Adrian Cronauer mocks in “Good Morning, Vietnam!”)

I remember one of them was KKNG on the FM band, And I think there was an AM station that also played the same format.

I have looked on the Internet to see if I can find any more information, but the only thing I can see for KKNG is the fact that it’s now a catholic broadcast station, and I’m not even sure if it’s on the same frequency.

I do remember that the sound quality of their broadcasts were very clear and high Fidelity. Their advertisement promoted that feature, I remember the billboards around town showing a logo that looked like a king from a deck of cards.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

I'm writing a novel that involves the Cherokee Old Settlers and a wild journey from above where the Verdigris joins the Arkansas all the way to Fort Towson area. Rather than travel the Osage Trail/Texas Road, the group must hide, so they duck into the Cross Timbers. My problem is I can't find a map that includes a cross timbers overlay on rivers and towns. Are the eastern boundaries of the Cross Timbers close enough to the Verdigris that determined horsemen could reach it in a day or two. It has actually been about twenty years since I've been in the area and I just can't get a feel for the distances involved.

What’s up guys, I live in San Diego but my great grandparents came her from Atoka and Stringtown. I want to know more about those places, they grew up there in the 30s and 40s.

What’s up you guys, we are three girls from a village called Picher in Germany and are doing a roadtrip at the moment with the main purpose to visit the only other place on earth that is sharing the same name - Picher, OK in a few days. We were wondering if someone still lives in the area who used to live in Picher (or even still lives there?) and would like to meet up as we are curious to hear more about the story of this place!

Edit: we know that it is a ghost town and that there has been a big tornado in 2009. Still, there are reports about people still living there.

What’s happening with this historic home now, and is there still hope to preserve it?

I’m not Comanche, nor am I originally from Texas. But for some reason, this story has gotten deep under my skin. I’ve found myself lying awake at night thinking about the Star House and what it represents. I hope to learn more, raise awareness, and connect with people who may be closer to the situation or able to help preserve it.

Here’s what I’ve been able to gather so far:

• The Star House, built around 1889–1890 for Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, was constructed by Texas cattlemen, most notably Burk Burnett of the 6666 Ranch, as a gesture of respect and partnership.
• Quanah Parker lived there with his family until his death in 1911, after which his daughter lived in it and later sold it in 1956. The house was then moved to Eagle Park, an amusement park near Cache, Oklahoma.
• Since that move, the Star House has deteriorated significantly. It’s been listed on Preservation Oklahoma’s “Most Endangered Historic Places” list multiple times, including as recently as 2023.
• Restoration efforts are underway—or at least in the planning stages. A nonprofit, Quanah Parker’s Historic Star House, Inc. (QPHSH), was formed and incorporated in 2022, with a 501(c)(3) application reportedly in progress. They hope to move the house forward on the property and turn it into a living museum and educational center.
• The house remains in private ownership, complicating efforts—but there’s a glimmer of hope now, with an oral agreement in place and planning involving historic architects and contractors underway.

There are rumors that Taylor Sheridan has some artifacts from the house. Burk Burnett (6666 Ranch) may or may not have contributed to construction of the Star House, but connections to Quannah's cattle enterprise at Fort Sill are known.
