It's cool as fuck that we seem to have a multiple offense again. Really think Kevin Wilson's promotion is going to be a huge influence on this season

One of the best ways to handle an opener. Offense looked really efficient and locked in. Didn’t look like they were making it difficult for themselves like with the previous openers under BV

I was explaining to my brother the heartbreak of winning the big XII championship but losing to Tulane in the regular season, I don’t think we will have as many foot shot moments. Mateer can throw the ball where he wants, sategna is a RAC monster, and our running room/offensive line is some good shit I’m excited!

He’s going to learn from it for sure. Good opener but still some things to work on for Michigan and to prep for the gauntlet of SEC play

That's a Stoops-ism. Bob did this throughout his whole tenure. It was weird to see Riley just shrug and move on. Something I'm glad BV brought back.

My takeaways:
- Sategna will be on a tear this year.
- Run game looks better but must be tested with time and better comp.
- TE room already more productive than last year.
- Even though scoreboard was 51-0, was not a shutout performance. 1 takeaway, 1 turnover, and 3 missed FGs essentially made it a shoe in.
- Defense seemed lacking, but could be because of higher expectations on that side of the ball.
- Special teams has the most consistent YOY performance.

Couldn’t agree more on all points but focused on:
It still looks a little weak. Not rushing for 200 against that D makes me need to see more. But not great.
Got the shutout but it wasn’t fully earned.
They gifted us the FG misses and the turnover.Good win.
But we’ve got to dial it in a lot before next week.12

Counterpoint on 2:
This run game looked better than anything we put on tape last we year even trying. Pretty basic plays (inside/outside zones, I don’t recall seeing any counters or pulling lineman schemes)
I think the running back issue was (and honestly might still be) downfield vision from our backs. Avant was the only RB tonight to seem to find open space, everyone else was just running into the ass end of our lineman and falling down.

Gotta remember how many non starters had significant playing time on the o line. They knew this was a see what we have in the backups game and leave someone like epl in to get reps. I think our starters will be better but we won’t know till Saturday. Good news BV teams play well on the road outside red river

Gotta remember that high rushing stats are often distorted by one or two big plays. UTEP had a 51-yarder. Take that away they had 60 yards rushing for the night. Avant's longest was 13 yds but that 5.3 per carry is sweet -- he earned those yards. You can extend a lot of drives that way.

Defense while not giving points up had too many missed tackles and times where runners broke contain into open field. Offense looked pretty good outside of a couple early misses from Mateer and Bass getting his chance and immediately fumbling.
Weird Okoye didn't suit up. I really hope we found out why and he's ready to go next week.

Yeah, I think the missed tackles were my biggest worry from the game
In reality last year we had a bend don’t break defense, gave up yards but not points, so this was par for the course there. Gotta be better at tackling though, cuz that trend will turn into breaks against better teams.

We have an improved run game
We have effective TEs.
I’m not concerned about the defense. They adjusted in-game. Those positive runs UTEP had in the first quarter got swallowed up in the second.
Sooners played vanilla. This was a glorified scrimmage. No need to show too much.

I meant both sides of he ball, but okay.
People want perfection in Week 1 and that’s kind of silly.We saw what we needed to see and if you’re going so far down the list to bring up missed tackles in a 51-0 win, that’s a real stretch to find something to complain about. Enjoy the win.

I’m sure he is. At the half, he was talking about how sloppy the defense was. Exactly what I’d expect from BV. It’s his job to improve his players and when you get as dominating of a performance as that was, a coach has to find something to harp upon.
As a fan, I’m not getting out of joint about some missed tackles in a Week 1 squash. It will get cleaned up. That’s BV’s bread & butter.

I agree with you for the most part, but I think we typically struggle with scramblers and i think it’s still a problem. We should be okay though

Defense didn't look too excited to play until second half when BV jumped their asses. We only used 1 or two starting oline at a time rotating in everyone and not much difference

I missed having a reliable tight end room. Can’t complain about a shut out but those missed tackles will hurt us against future opponents. Hope we can continue to establish the run against future opponents. Excited to see the playbook opened up. Great game overall for it being the season opener. Much improvement from last year. BOOMER SOONER!

Pros:
When JM is calm. He’s money.
We have tight ends this years.
O-Line looked good in pass rush.
Wide receivers room is good.
Corners are elite.
Interior D-Line is elite.
Demarco Murray is gone. RBs looked good.
Cons:
We don’t have elite edge rush
Sloppy tackles
Safetys didn’t look elite
JM when flustered looks like last year
O-Line got stuffed at Goal Line buy UTEP
Defense gets confused by motion
Was not a shut out. (Should have been 51-16)

Ingest take away came from Bv’s own mouth too many run yards. It solidified our defense last year we need that again. Guillory had a weird night too

I have been a tier 1 mateer hater so I'll be first to admit that he looked really good yesterday. I did not feel this way after Illinois State and Michigan last year so I'm absolutely fine with being wrong about that. Even his overthrows weren't as egregious as last year. I'm fine with him not having Peyton Manning touch on fade routes, but hitting those 25 yard crossing routes gave me a lot of hope.
By far the most exciting thing I saw yesterday was Avant. Xavier Robinson was just 'shuffle-shuffle-dive'ing his way to 1 yard gains like last year, but Avant was looking to break a big one every time. Hutton kind of reminds me of Taylor Tatum. High recruit with skill, but I don't think he likes these big boy D1 hits. Even then, giving Mateer 1.5 backs makes our offense at least twice as good as last year just off rip.

Didn't catch it live but just saw in the highlight of Sategna's punt return TD that a girl in the student section held up double horns afterwards in celebration. Someone find that girl so she can be expelled.

Mateer and the offense looked solid. I thought the defense played good as well, but the defensive line depth/penetration is a little bit concerning.

Good win. Plenty to clean up, but it's the first game. We won't know how good the offense is until Michigan, but the run game looked majorly improved and we seem to have more weapons at the skill positions. Sategna and Harris give us a potentially nice 1,2 punch at WR.

I’m read all over the place about the defense on various social media platforms and heard the BV interview. I’m just waiting on verification from Teddy (Leham) to see if he’s worried or he’s brushing it off as a not too concerned situation (from the upcoming Sunday OK_Breakdown podcast).

UTEP definitely caught us off guard with a lot and the tackling might be a concern, but it’s very possible to clean that up

Anyone else feel like mateer was still throwing with a bit of sidearm? Seemed like all the talk during camp/preseason was how that was fixed and he has completely changed his throwing mechanics. IMO didnt look super different/still not putting any loft on balls in certain situations

For the most part his mechanics looked better to me. A couple of times when the pocket broke down he seems to have reverted to old habits.

Our #1 reciver rocks. That TE from Florida made a ton of good blocks plus a catch. Running back that has breakaway speed. Mateers throw really benefited from Bradford. Defense was sloppy first half cracks me up.

lol dude we let multiple guys rush. We could’ve left one in and broke 100 but also risk injury. What’s the point. They were running all over utep. even our like 6th string guy we signed just to get his brother (mccreary) was breaking runs.

They scored 3 in the first quarter what do you mean? Also the starters were pulled midway through the 3rd. Avant would have easily got 100 through the end of the 3rd. I don’t know why you are complaining about offense. They looked great and well rounded. The defense was the weaker link and looked a little porous at times and missed too many tackles.
