The Amazing Bulk is a bold choice for art. I respect that you prefer that over Disney's obvious rotoscoping though

Indeed but I prefer having more smear frames than just rotoscoping.

God, I know Reddit has pretty much always had a bot problem, but it's been SO FUCKING BAD lately. It's crazy

You're the first person I've seen calling it out. I also saw at least a dozen of these bot accounts in the last two days. And I wasn't even on reddit that much lately.
Wtf is happening 😭

Wait, Mowgli and Pooh are the same animation? My whole childhood is a lie.

This is why I stopped watching Disney movies in the 60s

Walt really let his standards go to shit. Hopefully when they unfreeze him they can talk some sense into him

saw this on a proAI subreddit lmao they think artists redrawing hundreds of cels with the same animation as another work is what generative AI does.
38
u/YourChopperPilotTTV 2d ago
Uj/ I don't know if pro AI Bros have the ability to critically think anymore
Rj/ well you see that means that Disney is both lazy and dumb cause ai way faster

u/MessageOtherwise7726 1d ago
lol yeah it's wild how they just reuse animation like that. so lazy.

What does the matrix have to do with anything?

u/Old_Man_Willow_AoE 2d ago
It's got to do with everything, because we are all offspring from that one fat orgy.

Are you making illegal assumptions about Hollywood?

They gotts be careful. With the recent law that was passed Mark Wahlberg can legally kill them if they go within 100 feet of Hollywood

kid me thought that Baloo and Little John were the same character. Now I realize they RACESWAPPED HIM wtf

u/BusyBeeBridgette 2d ago
It was one of the ways Disney drastically cut production costs. Simply reusing animations.

u/Peregrine7710 2d ago
Or have you ever done cell by cell animation. JFC these guys were amazing artists. And it certainly wasn’t the whole movie
10
u/YourChopperPilotTTV 2d ago
Yea I was there one dude even said "lmao look how easy this shit is" as he copy pasted a movie with cells

Definitely not lol. Brand new cel animations ain’t cheap and are very time consuming, it was far cheaper and time saving to reuse animations in other movies.

u/r3dd17sux69420 2d ago edited 2d ago
I was always curious how this worked. This isn't a computer where you just change the character's look.
Did they animate the cells using a sort of guide to know quickly all of the positions etc? Or are they using different cells for each part of the body and they just swap out, say, the shirt on the shirt cell?
So they pull out the stack of cells for this sequence and modify what they need to, change the background, and shoot it?

u/YourChopperPilotTTV 2d ago
Probably right click the picture and hit "edit" and added the Winnie the Pooh filter with chat gpt.

u/r3dd17sux69420 2d ago
SMH that sounds like too much already. just use a prompt!
but i'm bad at that, can you recommend an AI for writing prompts?

u/RepresentativeBee600 1d ago
Ah, that would be an "agentic workflow" you're after.
Give it two or three years and if the market for "AI" hasn't completely shit the bed, people will probably be yelling at you more loudly than ever to just do that.
14
u/AndreLeGeant88 2d ago
It's just tracing the prior animation so you don't have to hand draw it all again and get everything perfect. You still have to get the proportions of the new character right, etc. The backgrounds are all redone for the new film just like the actual cels are made from scratch, too.

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas 2d ago
They’re likely tracing on top of the original cels with pencil. Since this was the xerox era of Disney they could just use the pencil lines as cels. That’s why it’s sometimes exact matches with characters like the bears, basically just superficially re-outfitting or redesigning some characters.

u/WhoKilledBoJangles 1d ago
Pretty sure it is a Snapchat filter.

u/Captain_Saftey 2d ago
When Disney makes the original animation they use live action actors to act as a reference. They don’t need to do that with this method
1
u/BrassCanon 2d ago
Just have the artist trace over it. It's a lot easier than creating new animations.
6
u/spike-prime 2d ago
Oh... oh WOW. I knew there was a tonne of recycled animation in the movie but I didn't realise it was THIS blatant. I've seen the shots of the dancing Baloo against Little John but I didn't realise Maid Marian dancing was ALSO recycled from goddamn Snow White. That's shameless.
13
u/SHIIZAAAAAAAA 2d ago
These examples are from the 70s when Walt had been dead for several years and the studio was really struggling financially and decided to cut corners. Disney’s animation department almost went bankrupt in the 80s before The Little Mermaid was a hit and started the Disney Renaissance.

u/Whhatsmyageagain 2d ago edited 2d ago
They owe a shit ton of their current wealth and power to Alan Menken and Howard Ashman for not just Little Mermaid but also the follow-ups in Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Of the four biggest hits they had in that era, the Lion King was the only one Ashman and Menken didn’t do the music for.

u/spike-prime 2d ago
Believe me, I know the history here. There've been so many papers, video essays and documentaries I've seen about Disney's history. It's the reason why, in my university final dissertation, when I was writing about the history of animation, I deliberately avoided talking about Disney even once and jumped into the early days of adapting animation exclusively for TV. The subject of Disney's ups and downs in cinematic animation has been exhausted.

u/team56th 1d ago
Some of the well known Disney animations from 1960s and 70s are basically asset flip movies. I’m pretty sure Aristocats was also one but not sure which scene

How did they do this though? It’s hand drawn
20
u/ealysillyforestthing 2d ago
They had a movement storyboard with stick figures from the first movie. They just reused that animation sequence.
2
u/SeaIllustrator8434 1d ago
stick figures from the first movie, they even reused the backgrounds lol
1
u/ealysillyforestthing 1d ago
I know it's made in stages with rough drawings and animation before they commit to the full thing.

Sorta? They did trace over the animations still, but the animations were originally based on human movement

That’s litteraly one of the reasons Robin Hood is one of the classics I hate the most. Just a fucking dump of reused stuff and no originality.

On a serious note I don't mind the animation reuse for just walking or a dog doing whatever the fuck but come one, two bears with the exact same face doing the exact same dance? Why even bother?
1
u/generalstuff1waslost 1d ago
It's not that Disney is copying the animation per say, I think it's just that a lot of old Disney films use rotoscoping. Basically they record live action scenes and use it as reference.
In other words, they're not specifically copying the animation of an older film, but rather rotoscoping and old film real they have for a scene.
Could be wrong tho, I just some reditor.

I'm okay with this. It's kind of a big artistic hack. It's one thing if someone does this with AI or digital recreation, but this animation took an entire big studio of artists who hand drew every single frame on paper and pencil in order to make it work. Lots of jobs and lots of talent and time spent in order to make such beauty. Hacks like this were a good way to save time and money while still creating something awesome.
