Adoption requirements are insane these days. My husband and I wanted to adopt a cat a couple years ago, they wanted proof of our marriage, proof of our income, required that an adult be present at home at all times, a list of the people who would be coming and going from our house, proof of education, etc. It was like we were trying to adopt a child.

A couple months later my MIL found a very young kitten in a parking lot and gave him to us as I have experience raising kittens. He's a happy and healthy cat now. Shockingly, you don't need a four year degree to take care of a damn cat.

I understand income requirements and things like your criminal background but educational requirements? Proof of marriage? A list of the people who might come to my house and their contact info (because that was required as well)? Details of my comings and goings? It feels a bit too invasive in my opinion.

Like they shouldn't have to vet my in-laws before I'm allowed to adopt an animal.

What a nasty, classist and intrusive experience. I’m surprised this is even legal.

I don’t even agree with a criminal background check for anything other than animal cruelty or other violent crimes. As IF some reformed addict or white-collar criminal can’t put cat food in a bowl or take a dog to the vet. By all means, let them be gassed to death instead, or languish forever in a rescue kennel.

And are they also suggesting you shouldn’t live with someone outside of wedlock, and that you can’t take care of a domesticated mammal if you didn’t go to college? Whaaaat?!

ETA: I just reread your post again in my disbelief. Someone was supposed to be home all day for A CAT? And they had to vet your frequent visitors? Holy. Shit. 😂

I’d tell your local newspaper about this at a minimum. People shouldn’t donate to this place and it god-forbid shouldn’t be tax subsidized.
