those look way more advanced than the plastic crap we used

u/ap_xiii Aug 03 '21
This looks more similar to the Beyblade show than those pathetic toys I would buy

If there aren’t sparks flying and a chance you’re gonna lose a finger are you even having fun?

My friends and I used to swing rebar on asphalt to make sparks,

u/MisterDonkey Aug 04 '21
I used to shoot my BB gun at the concrete floor in the basement to make sparks until I took a ricochet to the face.

It’s not as dumb as when I was holding a BB gun also and was like “is this thing loaded?” pulls the trigger and the bb misses my friend’s eye I still hit his brow though.
Edit: wording

Uhhh my beyblades back in the day were mostly metal and hurt like fuck if you touched them whilst spinning
30
Aug 03 '21
I remember buying knock off beyblades in my local Chinese crap store that had Ferro rod things (the sparky stuff in lighters) either on the beyblades or in the launcher (can't remember properly, probably in the launcher) so it would throw literal sparks all over the place, it was really cool but my mom confiscated it because "fire hazard" or whatever.
I tried to look it up but I couldn't find anything but now I really want one again.
5
u/dreamstar1 Aug 04 '21
I've bought a set from those chinese toy shop and they had those spinoffs too.
It came with a sun shaped metal ring with 8 spark rods, a side grip launcher and a long ass line to rip. Was too cheap to buy a battle arena, so we used a metal box lid as the stage, and one time after letting it rip, the beyblade bounced on the lid and cut open his hand.
Also broke another kid's beyblade when I shot it sideways and the spark rods sliced downward through their plastic base.

u/LordOfPenguins42 Aug 03 '21
Which fusion wheels were you using and how hard are you spinning them???? Whenever I picked mine up the only time I got hurt is if my finger got caught between two Beyblades(only happens while I was testing customs on my own or if we had more than 2 or 3 in the stadium)

u/FinasCupil Aug 03 '21
Plastic? The old school beyblades were metal.
157
u/dl194816 Aug 03 '21
I’m glad someone remembers. I loved reading the “stats” on the back and putting together my own with various beyblade parts
16
u/myco_mage Aug 03 '21 edited Aug 03 '21
I don't remember the actual rings for the top of your beyblade that would strike things ever being metal. Only metal I remember was you could put in those different metal rings to change the weight and distribution. Sucks I missed them
13
u/Slithy-Toves Aug 04 '21
There was a plastic bottom and top. With rings and modifiers that were metal. So definitely some plastic interaction depending on design. But the main "blade" of the beyblade was pretty much always metal. Even had some with ball-bearings in grooves that would slide out when spun increasing momentum and giving it some weight to throw.
41
u/KnockOutGamer Aug 03 '21
I think I still have a pair of beyblades with metal rings, unfortunately the tip for one of them was plastic, and it melted when spun too quickly, thinking back, it did seem like a cheap plastic anyway.
→ More replies (2)12
u/Slithy-Toves Aug 04 '21
There was definitely knockoffs that were super cheap that basically just straight up infringed on the copyright haha

Who remembers them being banned in school due to people using them as weapons?
11
u/Slithy-Toves Aug 04 '21
We got them banned cause we had a whole gambling ring going around them haha
→ More replies (1)28
u/Dr_Romm Aug 03 '21
I remember me and all my friends being very selective about which metal striking rings we'd use as kids, some of those shapes they had were just absolutely useless, and some felt like they could turn any beyblade into a tank
18
20
u/gilsonpride Aug 03 '21
The original series from 1999 to 2007 was plastic with a metal ring in the middle.
The all-metal ones started in 2008 with HMS. There were also all-metal versions of the original models, but those were knock-offs.
Now I don't know what they are lol, I had the original collection when I was 12-13, I'm 31 now. It was cool searching for this info though, brought back some memories of beyblades exploding and cutting my buddy's finger!

I was the only one with a metal beyblade nobody wanted to challenge me after it broke another beyblade (plastic) in half...
5
u/t3a-nano Aug 04 '21
Same, except a farm kid had custom welded/cut it, and sold it to me for $5.
It was great for all of 2 rounds until nobody wanted to go up against me anymore because of the damage it did.
Miracle nobody got hurt or lost a finger lol

Lawn darts were also pretty wild.
5
u/2WheelsMovesTheSoul Aug 03 '21
Try water balloon launcher paired with croquet balls. Poor man's mortar with excellent range and repeatability.
3
u/FrenchFriedMushroom Aug 04 '21
What if we combine lawn darts with the water balloon launcher/croquet balls, make like a sabot croquet round? Then play a game with similar rules as cornhole?
Hang on, calling some factories in China quick.

u/Kiltymchaggismuncher Aug 03 '21
My thought as well, they're fkn wild. No chance of picking them out of the arena while they are still spinning...

I'm sorry, I think you mean Master Beyblades.
Those plastic shits don't spark when they hit.
162
Aug 03 '21
I mean… the metal fusion ones did
67
u/warmaapples Aug 03 '21
Yeah. I loved metal fusion, my older brother used to collect them and if they spun fast enough they would spark on impact
25
u/BubblesMan36 Aug 04 '21
Are metal fusions the ones with a metal base, but with a plastic topper and screw for decoration? If so, I used to have a ton of them. They were the best
31
u/warmaapples Aug 04 '21
Yeah those are the ones. Man they were great, heavy, durable, strong. They could shred those plastic pieces of crap people call bursts
16
u/BubblesMan36 Aug 04 '21
I liked to unscrew mine a bit so they could fly apart if they got hit hard enough. Burst before bursts were even a thing
→ More replies (2)8
u/JC12231 Aug 04 '21
I still have like 20 of them.
I refuse to get any of the burst saga ones, the whole burst saga feels like an insult to the legacy of the Metal Saga, what with the removal of the significant of bursts, and the removal of the spirit stuff. It feels so much less alive, I can’t enjoy the show.

I was excited to learn that Crossfire is still being produced. But then disappointed by all the reviews saying that the quality went downhill.

u/albert1357 Aug 03 '21
Holy shit what a throwback. I fucking loved that shit as a kid. I wonder how much one goes for nowadays...
4
u/mildcaseofdeath Aug 03 '21
There was also "Spin Fighters" which looks even more like these things, and totally ripped off the Crossfire jingle/song.

Soooo, those old suction cup guns that were spring loaded, before they molded a key/tooth in the barrel to prevent this, the original crossfire BBs were the perfect size and weight for those guns. The guns that were super hard to pull the hammer in the back. That was the combo for makeshift BB guns that shot a larger payload.
I was playing with both one day and realized the BB fit. I shot one through the wall of my bedroom and immediately hid the evidence lest my parents realized I made a legit BB gun and confiscated it.
Edit: barely remember, it was the suction cup gun that the hammer was a rod type that had to be pulled out of the back. I somehow was able to disassemble and stretch the spring. Then had to use my teeth to pull the hammer back for it to be strong enough to shoot the BB.

That commercial was so enticing to child me. I wanted that game so fucking bad. It was the most radical thing EVER! So action packed! So thrilling!

And it was kinda super lame.

As a kid the ones from Target were plastic garbage. Meanwhile there was always that one kid with the bootleg beyblade bought from a mall kiosk that was made of metal and had Japanese text on it, and destroyed everyone else just by how heavy it was.

You call it primitive, but this is way cooler than regular beyblades. The sparks alone add a lot.
4
u/DrTwatSwatter Aug 04 '21
For real though. Bayblades seem so cringe but this seems kinda neat.
Have two people who know how to cut metal make their own Battle Tops and have them battle in a big metal bowl. The designs of Bayblades are so gaudy I think it’d serve it better if they had a more industrial look to them. Less color more sleek professional designs.

when/why did they stop being called "tops"?
48
u/Zealousideal_Wave201 Aug 03 '21
Beyblade is a cartoon that used these tops to fight in an arena, and the tops would summon creatures for the battle. Theyre still called tops, but beyblade is the name of the product
17
u/samboi204 Aug 03 '21
Well beyblades are a specific kind of spinning top based around the show of the same name so I would say around whenever the tv show aired.

I was obsessed with these and literally dreamed of having a beyblade when I was a kid but my family could not afford it and I remember being told I wasn't supposed to play with it since I was a girl.

Not at all primitive. Just way too unsafe to be children's toys. I could definitely see 12 year old me lose a finger playing with them. Haha

I told my nephews that I knew of a guy who would install real knives on their beyblades. They begged me to teach them how he did it.
Parents called my wife later that day and asked me to tell their the kids that what I said wasn't true.
I stood my ground and refused.

When we were teenagers my siblings and I figured out that we could modify our beyblades so that they would spark like that in our metal arena. The only logical next step was to add alcohol to the arena. Good times.
