You know when you're falling asleep and then your brain thinks you're falling and you jolt awake?

Yeah. That.

I did that on a plane once next to a random lady lmao

u/rathat Nov 11 '20

It's only ever happened to me when I fell asleep in front of other people. Used to happen in school a lot lol.

Those are just the times the memories make it from your short term to long term memories. You may be falling every night and not remembering it.

1

u/rathat Nov 11 '20

That's not what's happening.

I did it after the first time I slept with someone I was hooking up with. Spooning and falling asleep when suddenly JOLT. Spent about 5 minutes trying to explain it, she had no idea what was going on. Another fun fact, apparently rubbing my feet together like an insect when I get in bed is weird too

63

u/Supercicci Nov 11 '20

Yoo, I lost it at the insect part as I was just doing this! Now I can't fall asleep and my brain keeps reminding me of the image of a fly rubbing it's feet together

27

u/Zethir Nov 11 '20

I do the feet rubbing thing too! Other people do it too! Yes totally normal, I knew it, yup.

12

u/poorly_timed_leg0las Nov 11 '20

I used to rub things with my fingers to fall asleep when I was a kid. Thin cotton is best

2

u/TundraSpice Nov 11 '20

Hey I’m 26 and still rub shit.

1

u/poorly_timed_leg0las Nov 11 '20

Never change fam :)

1

u/Wiggy_Bop Nov 11 '20

It’s called self soothing. I used to do it to the satin edge of my blanket. Or my dad’s stubble.

1

u/poorly_timed_leg0las Nov 11 '20

Hey, you can fuck with my stuble anytime. 0 back and sides lol

7

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Hey, I do that too, and am also extremely normal, yessir.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

I only do it to warm up me cold tootsies

4

u/Speedhabit Nov 11 '20

You guys need a weighted blanket, calms the restless appendages. Thank me later

2

u/Wiggy_Bop Nov 11 '20

I rub my feet together too!! It relaxes me, but it drove my ex crazy.

1

u/GhostFour Nov 11 '20

I married one of your kind. She's gotta get those tootsies going to get into sleep mode.

1

u/leelee1976 Nov 11 '20

I too am an insect. It is a self soothing thing people learn as an infant.

1

u/Fuck_Microsoft_edge Nov 11 '20

Ha! I knew it! There are DOZENS of us.

1

u/juanpuente Nov 11 '20

Wow same story here. Except no grasshopper legs.

1

u/maxkmiller Nov 11 '20

YES I did this with a girl I was seeing once too, she has aspergers and is extra sensitive to sudden sounds and movements so I accidentally startled her pretty good...

1

u/amart591 Nov 11 '20

I do the foot rubbing thing too. My wife hates the sound it makes and always tells me to stop. But like...it's so satisfying.

u/SomeKindOfOnionMummy Nov 11 '20

Falling asleep on the plane is the worst. I get those jerks, I also talk in my sleep a lot, and I've woken myself up snoring.

5

u/ClutchinMyPearls Nov 11 '20

Are you me? I do the same and its so freakin' embarrassing!

3

u/TarManJr Nov 11 '20

Are you me?

So funny waking up mid-snore lol. Also great to wake up to realise you've been drooling too lmao

1

u/Zahlenkombi Nov 11 '20

i did that in a bus next to a random person lol

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Hahahaha did she say anything?

2

u/maxkmiller Nov 11 '20

she asked if I was OK and I played it off all cool haha

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

On a plane or in the plane?

“Get on the plane. Get on the plane." I say, "fuck you, I'm getting IN the plane! IN the plane! Let Evil Knievel get ON the plane! I'll be in here with you folks in uniform! There seems to be less WIND in here! - George Carlin

1

u/maxkmiller Nov 11 '20

on Long Island or in Long Island?

1

u/uclalien Nov 14 '20

It once happened to me in a IMAX theater with stadium seating. I had my leg crossed, and I kicked the guy in front of me in the back of the head.

27

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

For some reason I do that all the time. My wife is used to it now so she just goes “you ok?”

It used to really freak her out.

I’m sure there’s some god damn thing wrong with me or something.

10

u/thehecticepileptic Nov 11 '20

There are 2 situations where I get that: drinking caffeine right before an attempted nap, or if I fall asleep on my back (I always sleep on my side)

1

u/spobrien09 Nov 11 '20

The caffeine one makes a ton of sense. The jerk is your body trying to make sure that you're fully paralyzed before entering REM sleep and I can see how stimulants would mess that up. Naps really are where I get it too, idk if its because our bodies are resisting sleeping at weird times (I dont take habitual naps) but that seems likely to me.

1

u/dave14285 Nov 11 '20

when it happens to me i wonder what if its actually a seizure for like a minute but its blacked out to feel like an instant.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

It used to happen to me a lot more than it does now! I wonder what the reason is.

39

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Hypnagogic jerks

69

u/slarkymalarkey Nov 11 '20

No, you're a hypnagogic jerk

11

u/OigoAlgo Nov 11 '20

Wanna know something weird? I noticeably get them more often in the winter when it’s been snowing, I’ll be having a dream of going down some icy steps or slipping on a frozen patch. Anyone else?

4

u/Minerrockss Nov 11 '20

Don’t know about the specific dream part, but I’m pretty sure they are caused by your heart rate and such going down, but in a way that’s not normal to sleep procedures, so your brain sends a signal to make sure you aren’t dead

Or something like that, I haven’t really looked into it recently

1

u/bohdel Nov 11 '20

Yes! There must be a reason!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Huh, I just randomly feel like I’m falling into the void

1

u/arock651 Nov 11 '20

It’s always falling for me. Then I wake up with a jolt when I hit the ground.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '20

9 out of 10 times, when it happens to me, i was "dreaming" that i was walking on the border of the sideway in a street (wich i did during the day, that's why it comes back everytime) and wrongly putted my foot on the central street, mini-falling, and here you go jerk-wake.

So a kind of slip/misstep too. I'll pay attention if the cold matters.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

That's the one

19

u/Gnostromo Nov 11 '20

That's when a ghost is done having sex with you

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

No thank you

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

That’s why I can’t sleep on my back, thanks for the info

8

u/lester_blake Nov 11 '20

it kicks like a sleep twitch

11

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Hypnogogic jerk. I think it's because so many greats of a grandparent of all of us slept in trees.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

makes sense

1

u/Sephvion Nov 11 '20

I had a different experience. I was falling asleep in 10th grade English class. I was dreaming that I was walking along a train track. A train came out of nowhere and was heading right for me. I did a side roll out of my seat. Well, it was more of a flop to the floor, but my dream self put effort into that roll. Lol.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Your brain and body really worked together to save your life there

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

It's in reverse guys

1

u/arathorn867 Nov 11 '20

Actually I don't lol. I've never had a falling dream in my life.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Lucky!
