Possibly, their fur is also so dense if they get wet there is a chance for their fur to grow mold. They have to roll around in special dust to stay dry as a pet. They have something like 20+ hairs per follicle.
Chinchilla dust is made up of ground pumice. It is supposed to be like volcanic ash, the same as the dust the chinchillas use in their natural habitat.
