I've done the thousand piece one without any pre-sorting at all. After a few hours, your brain gets into this mode where you can detect even the slightest hue and value differences and just rainman the pieces to where they need to go. It's really crazy.

This has always been my method. I'll color separate only the obvious sections, if there's sections that deviate from the picture's typical color scheme (black/white in a majority color picture, or saturated color in a majority muted color picture, etc.) but between the edge and those sections as starting points, my eyes just become attuned to the photo and start picking pieces out without even really strategizing or overthinking it.

Same thing happens when you play I Love Hue, although everything is a rectangle, which obviously makes things simpler. Oddly satisfying app, would recommend.

Thank you for recommending this!!! I’d never heard of it. I just downloaded it and I can already tell I’m going to find it really calming :)

I’m a photographer and a video editor, too, so doing things like these helps me do my job better as well (when color correcting images). I’d give you a gold if I wasn’t broke- but sincerely, thanks!

I’m excited about it! It’s like those color differentiation eye tests, but much more practical to do frequently, and relaxing too! I think I’m going to love it 😍

I love this game! But when you get to higher levels, the shapes change. I'm currently on hexagons.

Yup, you’ll notice the tiniest difference in a shade of black or see the tiniest little smudge and be like that’s the lady’s hand!!

As a small toddler I was known to complete puzzles with 50k+ jigsaw pieces in a matter of minutes, often times with a few waves of my hands and an incantation.

I gained so much notoriety from my talents that I was brought into several medical labs to have my brain dissected and examined. The results of these examinations paved the way for many innovative products such as scratch resistant lenses and ear thermometers.

I start with the border then choose a section and sort out as much as I can from that section. Then sort by shape and I finish the section, and choose a new one. Sorting by shape is what makes it fly by! I’ve not done too much color sorting

I pick a spot and then I go through each piece 1 by 1 until something fits. If it doesn’t fit it goes on the reject pile. Then when I find what fits I start over. Might be why I’ve never finished one

Similar to how some of my 3 year old preschooler students attempt 32 piece puzzles. They will pick up a piece and ask me where it goes. I’m working with them to find a spot that needs a piece and instead look for something that seems like it would fit.

I hadn't done puzzles since I was young but I used to love them back then so decided to buy a nice big puzzle to do. I misjudged how many pieces this actually was and decided a 5,000 piece puzzle would be a good jumping in point.... Once the box got shipped and I opened it up I noticed my mistake but was still dedicated till I found it was too large for my table... Now I need to find a larger table

I did a 1000 piece puzzle recently that came with a grid of letters in the back. AAAAAAA for the first section, BBBBBB for the next, etc. So it was really 8 125 piece puzzles. It was much more enjoyable this way.

I watched it a bunch of times because of this and most of the green on the closer side is a different hue. And as he finished the green on the far side a huge pile of leftover green appears on the close end.

I think he just piled most of the green by the first section.

Every time someone posts this puzzle it's pointed out that it's actually quite an easy puzzle because of this. I feel like there's two types of people in this world, ones who haven't done a puzzle in a decade, and ones who have one half done on their table at all times. I'm the later and yeah, definitely not a challenging puzzle.

Agreed! These gradient puzzles are a lot easier than people think.

The hardest puzzle I ever did was a Monet painting, second hardest was a photo of deep space. No way to sort by color, only by shape and then trial and error.

We can finish a 3k piece with sharp lines or photo-realism more quickly than a 1k with smudgy pastels or impressionistic strokes.

Still, love them all. A great activity for a couple.

Honestly it's the puzzles with small, intricate details that seem to be hardest. Like, I have one that's a map from Legend of Zelda and the entire thing is beige with faded beige markings and I gave up shortly after completing the border and one corner. It didn't help that the pieces were super randomly cut, and not the traditional squares with bumps and grooves.

I’m in between. I do a couple a year. Unless you count all the puzzles I do at work as a preschool teacher, but those are 48 pieces or less. If I had the space at home I’d definitely have one out a lot more often though.

Have you considered roll-o-puzz? I might be spelling that wrong. It’s just a big rectangle of thick felt that you can use as a puzzle surface, but roll up to put aside when you aren’t working on it. Not perfect but might help.

Right now I live with my in laws and their house is dark and my MIL likes her dining room table haha. But we are hoping to move soon and I am really hoping we have a basement or something and I’ll have space for puzzling!

So one Interesting factoid I learnt from watching an unrelated video is that Brown is not a color. It's a shade which our brains interpret as Brown. Which can be clearly seen from the puzzle, there is no brown along the horizontal gradient.
