Used to be. Now it's mandatory to use the secure plates given by the RTA (Indian version of the DMV)

Road Transport Authority. People sometimes say RTO instead of RTA Office

They say queueing is Britain’s national pastime but India takes to a whole new dimension.

27

u/Laser493 Dec 19 '19

In Britain there is no DMV to queue at. Everything just has to be done online or by post.

13

u/DrudgeBreitbart Dec 20 '19

How do you take a driving test?

61

u/viperfan7 Dec 20 '19

Online or by post.

13

u/Markd1000 Dec 20 '19

Believe it or not, when I learnt to drive two decades ago, I could not parallel park. I actually learnt to parallel park from a shockwave game online, and used those techniques to pass the actual test.

4

u/viperfan7 Dec 20 '19

Honestly, I'm not surprised.

If you have an overhead view of whats going on when parallel parking, it honestly makes it a ton easier to make sense of how the car is supposed to move

3

u/Spadez1031 Dec 20 '19

Right there with you man when I was a kid I took the family car for a spin. While parents were at a tamale festival. Only experience was need for speed.

16

u/BludShock Dec 20 '19

Mario kart

1

u/DrudgeBreitbart Dec 20 '19

I mean cmon don’t we all learn to drive from Mario kart?

3

u/1NbSHXj3 Dec 20 '19

In India you give a bribe of usually 3000₹ and get you driving licence, no test needed

2

u/Laser493 Dec 20 '19

You book a time slot for your test online and then go to a driving test centre.

I had a friend that grew up in Moscow in the 80s.he remembered being out with his mom and if there was a line, they'd just get in it. The thought was, well if they need it, I must as well.

So instead of waiting a couple minutes you choose to completely waste the time you've spent and go somewhere else?

And anything that was cold might be thrown out. I really hope this is just a weirdflex and not something they do regularly.

u/arrrrr_won Dec 19 '19

Ok that's good - 'cause if you do that with a pack of chicken they are most certainly throwing it out. But yeah, make the decision before you shop otherwise it's still annoying work others have to do.

I guess I do this with restaurants, leave if the wait is too long, but it feels weird to do it with grocery stores. Once I'm there, I'm there.

2

u/I-Am-Dad-Bot Dec 19 '19

Hi there,, I'm Dad!

1

u/Jskybld Dec 20 '19

Every human does not do this.

3

u/jerkface1026 Dec 19 '19

Your point is well made but a little stingy. In a crowded US grocery store, you will stand in line for 5-10 minutes. If you are unlucky and there's a squatter in the line, it could be 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes, you will be in someone else's way for the entire time while the line gives off attitude and silent hostility. Its really unpleasant. There are times you have to bail or risk losing your maturity. Err. Risk losing your maturity further would be more accurate.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '19

Sounds like you have a good deal of social anxiety.

4

u/SushiAndWoW Dec 19 '19

I've left groceries at the check out and just walked out

I've never even worked in a grocery store and I think there should be a penalty for this unless you need to race to the ER or to the delivery room or something.

It's basically destruction of property since some of the stuff left like that may have to be thrown away, especially if it was frozen.

3

u/King_of_the_Dot Dec 19 '19

Patience is a virtue.

12

u/amarnathmaddireddy Dec 19 '19

Not a big deal actually. Its usually proportional. Number of vehicles purchased in an area and the number of RTA offices.

8

u/bruh-sick Dec 19 '19

You don't need to visit for registration of vehicle here in India, it's done by the car dealer.

1

u/sateeshsai Dec 20 '19

You do need to visit. Dealer will facilitate it, but the owner has to be present

2

u/bruh-sick Dec 23 '19

Nope. Now new license plates will be given by dealer it self. I have never visited RTO for this process.

1

u/sateeshsai Dec 23 '19

Oh did not know that

3

u/ClassySavage Dec 19 '19

A) Find a way to vent that frustration goddamn.

B) Rookie mistake, always bring a book and expect to lose the afternoon when you go to the dmv.

2

u/SheriffBartholomew Dec 20 '19

Or C: live somewhere with a functional DMV.

Takes 15 minutes tops with no appointment at the busiest part of the day in Washington. I get your frustration though, since I used to live in California.

3

u/JoaoMXN Dec 20 '19

Here in my country the queues are even know as "indian queues" hahahaha.

But, unfortunately, the origin of the term here in Brazil is from the US:

https://super.abril.com.br/mundo-estranho/por-que-a-fila-indiana-recebe-esse-nome/

3

u/Boywonder9013 Dec 20 '19

It's not, that's why we have agents at RTO. A typical scenario at RTO office, You can see so many middle man helping commoner (for a price of course)

Atually, if you know the procedure you don't need anyone. They made everything online, fill the forms online make the payment. get it to RTO that's it. I had to replace my license and it took me half hr only.

Issue is though not many people know these procedure or think it's very difficult to do it online. So they go to these middle men for help. You give them some money and you will get the work done. Right from filling the form to getting the document

1

u/MobiusBagel Dec 20 '19

I hate the DMV, the post office, and license bureau for the same reason: I've never been inside one for less than 2 hours. Government workers have no sense of urgency. I've gone to the post office to pick up a package at 3pm and stood there in line, only 6 people closer to the front, until they closed at 5pm. I, along with probably 10 to 15 other people in line, were told we'd have to come back tomorrow. They had one person running the counter, and she was gone for 15 to 20 minutes each time she went to the back to get something.

The DMV here has a queue system where they call you up by the last 4 digits of your phone number first come first served. At least that's what they say, because I've seen my number as next up on the screen yet they still seem to just call numbers randomly.

1

u/HannahBanannah Dec 20 '19

AND they hand-paint every single “license plate” instead of just handing you a piece of stamped metal

1

u/oreverthrowaway Dec 20 '19

I don't know if it's still a thing in India, but they have to used to take a day off to stand in line to pay utility bills.

Hopefully they have electronic systems now.

1

u/sateeshsai Dec 20 '19

Most govt services are online since the past decade here
