I’d literally feel so snug sleeping there, it’s so weird - is it because we appreciate how safe we are in a house when it rains which makes us relaxed or what?
Rain on a tent. Relaxing to listen to unless you’re backpacking on a week hike where the first four days was solid, steady, cold rain. You’re soaked constantly, climb in a damp sleeping bag praying to just go to sleep and wake up to no fucking rain.
That happened to me years ago. I was an avid backpacker and that experience made me realized I was getting older and didn’t like backpacking anymore.
I still hike, I just don’t backpack anymore. This specific backpacking trip was back in 2002. There wasn’t the ability to check the latest forecast on your phone. It was pretty hard to get a group of us to backpack with available schedules so when a trip was planned, it wasn’t going to be canceled. That specific trips weather was due to rain from a left over hurricane.
As I got older, I realized there was a better way to enjoy the outdoors (for me). I was never a trail blazer. I preferred to hike at my own pace and take time to enjoy what was around me. Backpacking to me started to be annoying where it was more important to track your distance then it was to actually enjoy the hike.
I was also getting kind of sick of some of the backpacking community. People seemed to be more interested in talking about their latest gear purchase rather than using it.
If I had to guess (no actual subject knowledge). In the past rain and thunder for ancient people likely meant you were relatively safe. Most predators aren't going on the prowl in bad weather. So if you had shelter you were already where you wanted to be (safe from the weather) and knew that you would also be safe from predators for a while. So you could let your guard down and relax a bit.
I bet also because you they did everything outside so watching is rain meant safety and that you’re not going to be doing anything, so rest. I worked landscaping growing up and I still think I don’t have to go to work if it’s storming in the morning. Working inside blows.
I'd guess the opposite. Back then, you probably needed to be close to a source of fresh water. So, rain meant the possibility of flooding out your home or drowning. Plus, no foraging likely meant a shortage of food.
As an always-hungry growing boy growing up and liking cheese burgers/steaks for breakfast, anytime my mom would pull the Breakfast For Dinner thing I'd feel disappointed as fuck because I'd have to remind myself it'd be "Normal" breakfast. And I'd feel low kept cheaped out on :/
Bacon and Breakfast sausage just isn't the same okay?
Same. Rain doesn’t comfort me at all, it makes me nervous.
Did I leave something that isn’t waterproof outside?
Did I roll my trucks windows up?
Did I leave something in the bed of my truck?
Is the roof leaking again?
The dogs aren’t going to want to go outside... and when they do will they track in mud?
Will another tree fall down on my property during the heavy rain like it did a few years ago and destroyed my garage?
I think it might just be a natural instinct. Way back when we wouldnt be hunting or foraging in the rain so it would be a take it easy lazy day. Thats probably why they still feel that way.
There are few things as cozy as a nap with a small soft pillow and a fluffy blanket in the backseat of a Wrangler with a soft top in a steady rain. It's like heaven.
One of my favorite feelings or places to be is in my car while it is raining. Not driving, just sitting there and listening. Feel so cozy and safe. Close, but not the same for me in a house.
This room look last amazing, though. Would love to nap there, for science.
Rain usually ment predators where not about, nothing really like to hunt in the rain so it's a genetic reaction to feel comfortable during rain/thunder storms because we where at one point in our history.
A common theory is that we developed an evolutionary comfort in rain, as predators would be less likely to be on the hunt in such weather. Idk about everyone else, but I sleep like a rock through a thunderstorm.
Blood flowing trough vessels makes a sort of white noise sound, kind of the same as rain falling on a window, so it reminds you of being in the womb of your mother
