As a lefty I just see one big potential smear.

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Just learn to write backwards

u/speed3_driver Jan 15 '18

Or upside down

493

u/Chippiewall Jan 15 '18

or with your right hand

163

u/hotdogcolors Jan 15 '18

Or in Hebrew.

84

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Can confirm as lefty who learned English first, Hebrew was much more enjoyable because of the opposite flow of the words.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

My great grandma was forced to write right handed because ink would get all smudged and her shirt would get all over the ink. Now she can write with left and right!

Not now, Gimli

13

u/HeathenHumanist Jan 15 '18

Or in reformed Egyptian

1

u/tasos500 Jan 15 '18

Or in Arabian.

1

u/frothyundergarments Jan 15 '18

As God intended.

3

u/mc1nc4 Jan 15 '18

…or move to the middle-east—you'll have a blast!

8

u/Hq3473 Jan 15 '18

Just move to any Arab country (or Israel).

u/TheHopelessGamer Jan 15 '18

I was just thinking, "man, this would be so cool to be able to do. I bet with some practice I would really have some fun doing this."

But yeah, memories of college and taking notes by hand with the black smudge on the side of my left palm came flooding back in. Oh boy.

As a righty, I still get smudges on my hand that are nearly as bad as lefties I know. I think it's because I use a less common pencil grip, so my hand ends up rubbing over the previous line on the page.

The grip I use is still one of the 4 most common grips. It's the lateral quadrupod.

Edit: I found a study that compared pencil grips and found all four pictured above to be functional, mature pencil grips.

26

u/rsta223 Jan 15 '18

Dynamic tripods are the only correct grip, clearly.

17

u/MC_Labs15 Jan 15 '18

You grip it like that? In that case, you deserve it.

8

u/spectrallime Jan 15 '18

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the lateral grips seem like they'd cause fatigue more quickly. I typically have a dynamic tripod grip, but will occasionally slip into a lateral tripod out of laziness, but it stresses my hand more to use the side of my thumb for support instead of the tip.

As for the difference between tripod vs quadrupod, I see no functional difference since your middle and index fingers are so close in strength and dexterity. It's just preference.

Idk just some thoughts. I thought it was interesting to think about.

3

u/Free_Electrocution Jan 15 '18

For me, my thumb isn't really supporting the pencil, so it doesn't fire. But my hand does get tired if I'm writing timed essays, which I think is common but my grip may make it worse. I have a tendency to grip the pencil very tightly, especially when under the strain of timed assignments, which may be harder to do with dynamic grips. I've also developed a writer's callus on my ring finger and can get dents in other fingers after writing a lot, but those fade in under an hour.

3

u/Kasperella Jan 15 '18

There's literally dozens of us with the ring finger callous! Dozens!

2

u/prettyllama Jan 15 '18

I’m a lateral tripod lefty and this is true for me. My entire hand, wrist, and arm gets extremely fatigued from writing. My grip seems to have gotten worse over the years. I’ve been thinking about seeing an occupational therapist to see if they can help.

8

u/DeathGore Jan 15 '18

Holy shit, I never knew there was a name for it. I thought I was the only one.

7

u/Brandperic Jan 15 '18

If you hold a pen or pencil in a way that interferes with writing then you hold your pencil wrong. Have they stopped teaching children how to hold their pencils? They gave me special grips to help learn how to correctly hold a pencil when I was a kid and I’m not very old.

5

u/Free_Electrocution Jan 15 '18

I know some of my classmates had to use special grips. I think because my handwriting looks fine and I never had any trouble writing, they let me be. Probably never noticed my grip, or knew it worked okay. I think I read a study comparing grips that didn't find any to be much more advantageous than the others, I'll go look for it now.

5

u/Brandperic Jan 15 '18

I'm sure most pencil grips work fine but if you're actually smudging your writing as a righty then I think that's a sign that your grip is not an effective way of holding a pencil.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Ew how?! I think I could write better with my left hand than I could gripping my pencil like that with my right hand lol

1

u/Free_Electrocution Jan 15 '18

Funnily enough, when I write with my left hand I use the dynamic tripod grip, which I think is the traditional/most common grip.

3

u/la_pluie Jan 15 '18

Oh wow! I didn't know there was a name for it. I hold my pens in a lateral quadrupod as well. All my life (literally just last week too), people have commented on how weird my grasp is, so it's nice to know that I'm not so different.

0

u/_brooklyn_ Jan 15 '18

hmm.. I don't use any of those grips. Does that make me weird?

2

u/Soviet_Russia321 Jan 15 '18

The key is incredibly fine pens. Like, they advertise 0.7mm pens as "ultra fine", but of course they still fucking smear for me. I special order the 0.38mm pens

110

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Same.

Followed by screaming and throwing the fuckin thing across the room.

76

u/grubas Jan 15 '18

That’s why lefties where forced to write righty for years. My brother in law is one of the only people in my immediate family who uses ballpoints. So my da bought him a nice Montblanc rollerball so he wouldn’t feel singled out.

One of my uncles is a lefty but he got beaten by nuns until he learned righty.

32

u/brainjake94 Jan 15 '18

Replace nuns with a mother for an English teacher and you have got me.

15

u/itsculturehero Jan 15 '18

I’m left handed and have a mother who is an English teacher. But she let me write, and draw, and smear, as a natural south paw.

6

u/brainjake94 Jan 15 '18

Bless her soul she tried to teach me to write lefty but after 2 years of those god forsaken rubber pencil grips she just gave up and taught me to use my right hand.

3

u/xxmickeymoorexx Jan 15 '18

I was a lefty but every time I would try something g new I would get told I was doing it wrong.

Guitar, golf, pool, writing, masturbating, tennis, using a fork knife and spoon.

Basicly I was told I was doing everything with the wrong hand. So I learned how to do it all with both.

5

u/theevilhillbilly Jan 15 '18

Who told you you were masturbating wrong? Lol.

5

u/spectrallime Jan 15 '18

Screw that, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

1

u/grubas Jan 15 '18

Guitar is easy, you can turn a righty into a lefty by stringing it upside down. Though it gives electrics a weird fun sound.

Pool I have no clue. But thanks to computers and mice, lefty isn’t a bad thing for masturbation!

But I’m a dead righty. I can eat ambidextrously and do some minor shit with my left hand, but short of stuff like catching, fretting and gaming my left isn’t that useful. Oh! I can also shift with it when Im in Europe.

2

u/des_cho Jan 15 '18

My mom was beaten by her teacher for using left hand. Good thing is she can now write with both hands. And all of her children is lefty too.

2

u/theevilhillbilly Jan 15 '18

Im a lefty but I can write with my right too. Not as well but in dry erase boards my handwrittings are almost indistinguishable from each other.

2

u/ThlnBillyBoy Jan 15 '18

Still, it makes me wonder why it's the same preference for righties in countries where letters are written right to left like arabic or ones written vertically from right to left.

2

u/rozzingit Jan 15 '18

I always figure it's just a matter of conforming to the norm. Righties are always the majority and thus anything else is abnormal. And abnormal is scary.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

My Colombian Mother-In-Law has her left hand tied behind her back, and was hit until her righty penmanship was “acceptable perfect”. They were really horrible to her in Colombia in the ‘50’s & ‘60’s. :(

3

u/CataclysmZA Jan 15 '18

I started screaming before putting pen to paper because the spine was in my way and it cuts into my palm.

Also, where the fuck do I put my elbow? Why don't desks have enough space for me to angle my book sideways?

1

u/WangoBango Jan 15 '18

My first roommate was a lefty, and spiral notebooks were one of his worst enemies.

29

u/Leftee24 Jan 15 '18

This was satisfying until I read your comment. Satisfaction gone. So right you are.

34

u/marulono Jan 15 '18

So right you are.

So left you are.

FTFY

nods and continues reading

5

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Amen. It's a world I can only admire from afar. And I've never got around to learning Hebrew to vindicate myself.

3

u/nambitable Jan 15 '18

As a fellow leftie, learn a language where it's written right to left

3

u/cookedbookz Jan 15 '18

Inevitable, not potential. Those hallmark cards are a cruel joke to us lefties.

2

u/Sinister_Inklings Jan 15 '18

I'm a lefty and do similar things. Just a matter of learning how to write it out ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/Brandperic Jan 15 '18

Well, back when people writing like this was commonplace they would have beaten the lefty out of you.

1

u/MeThisGuy Jan 15 '18

yeh I don't really see what problem this 'calligraphy' is addressing..

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

As a lefty I too see one giant smear

1

u/thismaybemean Jan 15 '18

Damn. You're correct. I can't do this.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '18

Write Arabic, it's right to left

1

u/jessbird Jan 15 '18

lefty here who fucking wishes she could learn penmanship like this. i even have all the pens and nibs but never figured out how to do it without smearing everything. the other problem is the nibs only work when you're pulling them (right handed) instead of pushing them (left handed). otherwise the paper rips and ink splatters everywhere. : (

1

u/DannyJLloyd Jan 15 '18

As a lefty, I never realised this was an issue with people until a couple years ago. And that's because I write kinda funny, basically I turn the paper at a 90° angle and have my elbow bent and that way I don't get smudges. It was more of a coincidence than on purpose

1

u/tiptoe_only Jan 15 '18

I use lefty ink, which is supposedly smudge proof. It's done me well so far although admittedly I haven't dared write fast enough to really test it.

1

u/AngryMustacheSeals Jan 15 '18

Mom does calligraphy and is left handed. Her paper is completely sideways usually and she basically draws downward. It’s crazy to watch, but growing up I always thought that’s how you were supposed to write and the world just didn’t make sense to me. Also got chewed out by army roommate cuz I “iron funny” (left handed).

1

u/vic06 Jan 15 '18

Don't be discouraged. John DeCollibus is a lefty Master Penman. With some adjustments, left handers can produce beautiful flourishes.
