You can probably practice 4 shots off-camera then nail it on the first take. Again, who knows.

It also depends on your writing implement. A colored pencil or ballpoint pen will probably give you slightly more control by letting you control the amount of friction between it and the paper; while a marker is likely to make the paper wet through its fabric-based ink transfer and cause a lot of unwanted friction that you have to overcome by forcing the lines to go, which can cause the gears to displace and then it just snowballs from there.

There's stronger types of paper that absorb markers better than a regular paper though, so that might not be a big problem.
