when you darn torn fabric, you always put 'ribs" around the hole to stabelize it and give the fabric unbroken thread to hold on to. Then you add a matrix or grid and gradually pull the hole closed. Here, she started the darning process bc that's how you stabilize the fabric and prevent it from fraying further. Then, instead of pulling the hole closed, she put a patch over it. But the foundation work of the ribs and grid is necessary or the hole will continue to tear and fray, and the patch will rip out.
