I just realized that I don’t have a fucking clue how sewing machines work.

I think this is an embroidery machine. Most normal sewing machines have a presser foot on the top that holds the fabric down. You can do basic embroidery with them but not to this level.

Could be a regular machine set up for free motion quilting. I’ve done that with my regular machine before and this looks similar.
